Hey, guys. So I finished watching "The Rocketeer", and it was really good. It is based on the character of the same name created by comic book artist and writer Dave Stevens. It stars Bill Campbell as the title role, alongside Jennifer Connelly, Alan Arkin, Paul Sorvino, Tiny Ron Taylor and Timothy Dalton. The film takes place in Los Angeles, California, 1938, and tells the story of stunt pilot Cliff Secord, who discovers a hidden rocket pack that he thereafter uses to fly without the need of an aircraft. His heroic deeds soon attract the attention of Howard Hughes and the FBI, who are hunting for the missing rocket pack, as well as the Nazi operatives who stole it from Hughes. I really liked this movie. It was actually a lot of fun. The action scenes are good, the visual sequences by Industrial Light & Magic are so incredible, the music score by James Horner is heroic, the 1930s setting is worth seeing, the characters are interesting, and Bill Campbell is really good in the role, as for Timothy Dalton, Alan Arkin and of course, Jennifer Connelly, who is beautifully attractive, and I adore her. I like the love story between the characters of Cliff and Jenny Blake, as the recent events are driving a wedge in their relationship. Then in the end, they kissed each other, and Bill Campbell and Jennifer Connelly does have a great chemistry. It's a really good entertaining, comic book movie, as the homage of the film serials of the 1930s–1950s, an action-packed, if anachronistic, look back at pulp matinee serials, and it may ring hollow with viewers expecting more than simple fun and gee-whiz special effects. I know it underperformed at the box-office, and plans for sequels were abandoned. But nevertheless, it's a one stand-alone film, and that's good enough for me. Thumbs up for me on "The Rocketeer". Another original 8x10 press photo from The Rocketeer. I’ve always thought this was one of the best shots they ever took during production. There’s no dramatic pose, no drama, just a moment in time during the filming of the best scene in the movie (aside from Jenny’s stocking-introduction!); the Malcolm Rescue. Finhead collectors, note the small detail of the leather wear pattern inside the front bib that’s folded over where it clearly was getting beat up by the underlying hero grade rocket harness. A small Day 1 dose of our LA trip! During our planning process, we saw that LA had a number of Shakey's Pizza Parlor restaurants still going. Kenz used to go to Shakey's as a kid in Oshkosh, WI and hasn't been in forever! Personally, I've never been so we went to unlock core memories and the lunch buffet. 🍕The perfect post-landing lunch. We had planned to see the Griffith Observatory, but as it happened last time we visited, the Greek Theater had an event and parking was an absolute mess so we're moving that to another day where we can make it there easily. But we got to see the Ennis House (featured in movies such as Vincent Price's House on Haunted Hill, Timothy Dalton's mansion in The Rocketeer, and Harrison Ford's apartment architecture in Blade Runner) and visit @idlehour for delicious Rocketeer wings and to see the Bulldog cafe plus Drag Bingo! Last week the girls had the opportunity to go visit some very close friends of theirs in Syracuse. Which gave me the opportunity to catchup on TED, ridiculously hilarious, Reacher season 1 and a documentary I accidentally came across. The documentary I watched was called Dave Stevens: Drawn to Perfection. I heard of this artist before, but never got the opportunity to dive deep into his work. This man created a beloved character that I only enjoyed as a kid in the theaters, the movie is called The Rocketeer. I didn’t know he was the sole creator of that character. I thought for a long time it was a character created in the 30’s, just to be revamped for 1991. But that wasn’t what caught my attention about Dave Stevens, it was the way he portrayed his female characters. His art work is gorgeous, but his pin ups, especially his Bettie Page, pulls on all the emotions of an artist. Bettie Page has a special place in my heart, she is my all time favorite pin up girl period. This documentary dives deep into Dave Stevens history, his love of the art of the female figure, as do I. But to have the opportunity to become friends with an icon like Bettie Page, after drawing her for all his Rocketeer books after she retired, there’s just something sweet and special about that story.
