In the Briny. Title track of my new album and centrepiece song. This song has been in my live set for pretty much every performance since the day I wrote it. It is one of those songs that just breezed into my life with seemingly no effort. Whether I play as a solo or with Songbox it is always the closing track of the night and I always enjoy it the reaction it gets. Anyone who has been to one of my gigs will have heard its background story of my near drowning experience some years ago and it is funny, to have to remember that event on every gig night as I retell the events. The title “In The Briny”seemed an apt choice for the title of the whole album as the songs are all linked with water/sea/maritime themes. Great fun, working with this chap @purplebikemedia. He set up a couple of cameras in my flat, which is not the biggest space, but it worked perfectly with a bit of furniture shuffling. Wow I was part of a peach of a night last night. It’s the Folk and Blues club at The Six, Bells in Chiddingly. In a back room among ancient beams and playing in front of an open fire, and the breath of material was amazing, including some genuine lump in the throat moments. I was really pleased to be part of it and to have discover this well of talent. No pictures of me, but here is a picture of Lisa and Jason instead. I’m not exactly sure who does what in the set up of the running of things here (I heard talk of a committee) but Lisa and Jason are integral to the club and Jason did the sound for the night. Busy day that included a mentoring session with @kairenkemp who has gently but firmly let me know that I have a longish list of jobs to complete before the end of the month for my upcoming ALBUM release. (26th April folks) Actually it was excellent talking to her today. I feel very lucky to be able to work with her and also @amyvery who has taken on the parts of the project that I can’t reach. They both strengthen the batting lineup enormously. Phil and I shall be meeting Amy to take some photos this Saturday. Just having a quick think about an album cover from two favourite illustrations. Firstly a Golden Picture Classic of Treasure Island, probably from the 50s illustrated by Hamilton Greene, and secondly a page from the Ladybird book series called ‘The Story of Lighthouses Lightships and Lifeboats (illustrated by the great Robert Ayton in 1968) on the page about the Wreckers which inspired a song of the same name. I’m playing an F #minor chord which means I’m mid song in the Skipper a number I hardly ever play mainly as it clocks in at around 8mins (i’ve always wanted to write an epic, but it’s much harder than it looks and couldn’t stretch it and longer without it losing interest). Stone Cold rhythm section. Always so good to see @stevecubitt. We have done a lot of gigs together. Steve has jumped in and out of that band over the years and I was locked in there from 1988 to 2000. 👋 to anyone who remembers any of these sometimes brilliant shows.
