These 3 came out so different when painted. The plaster was the easiest to paint, the instant paper mache was a lot harder to paint, really bumpy but great if you want a very rustic look. The works are made from Crystacal and re-claimed granite and marble, which was sourced in the making of the large scale marble installation and plinths. In the making of my work for Twelve Thousand, pieces of steel that formerly belonged to Sir Anthony Caro were used as tools to give shape to various materials. The smaller available Crystacal works include direct cast replicas of pieces of Caro steel and casts of two-part silicone moulds. Playfully added additional Crystacal softly slices through the replicas of manufactured forms. I went to the newly opened exhibition “From Stone to Silicone: Recasting Mesopotamian Monuments” at the Harvard Museum of Ancient Near East @harvardmuseum on Sunday. It’s an installation of their latest reproductions of Assyrian palace reliefs. Around the turn of the century, the museum founder David Gordon Lyon (1852–1935) assembled a great number of plaster casts of wall reliefs, c. 9th-7th century BCE, from Nineveh and Nimrud in Mesopotamia (modern-day Iraq) as teaching tools for Harvard faculty and students. These plaster replicas were taken from original stone reliefs at the British Museum, the Louvre, and other collections. Plaster is susceptible to damage and the casts have remained in storage since 1958. The museum has recently recast them in resin, and now they are once again available for viewing and study. During January I posted a drawing every day, during February I posted nothing. In March I will post occasionally. Today I visited the Museum of Classical Archaeology, Cambridge with my art class. Love this building and I always find something to capture my imagination.
