I’ve logged just under 6 hours of training this week. Mostly rowing but I’ve included a few 2.5km runs at a good pace to keep fitness levels up. I was lost in my thoughts yesterday and was close to the end of my run, heart rate was at 170 when a monitor lizard ran out in front of me! 🇳🇱 The Dutch take to the Roxy Oars! 🇳🇱 Eleven members of the Haarlem Rowing Club boarded Roxy this morning for their North Sea crossing from Harwich to Amsterdam. The conditions could not have been better for their inaugural row in our unique 12 person ocean rowing boat. With very impressive rowing credentials, including 5 ocean crossings between them, this crew are undertaking the 30 to 40 hour row to raise funds for sheltersuits for the homeless. Hello Lightship Atlantic Family, We’ve been a bit quiet here recently, and we wanted to share why. Our beloved Pammie’s wonderful Father, Robin Carver, sadly passed away a few weeks ago. It’s been a deeply challenging time for Pammie and all of us who knew and loved Robin. To add to this, Pammie had a nasty fall at home, leaving her badly bruised. She’s been taking the necessary time to recover and heal. Despite these tough times, we’re now ready to continue our preparations for the Row later this year. Nia and Pammie are back, more determined than ever. 🔹 Awards Night 🔹 What a great way to round up the @worlds.toughest.row 2023 💫 Last Friday we gathered with the rest of the fleet for a lovely evening at the Mayfair Hotel in London. We had a great time reconnecting with the other teams and exchanging stories from the ocean. A huge congratulations to @hmsoardacious for winning this year’s race! You were incredible and gave us the motivation we needed to keep on chasing 💪 As winners of the fours we were also kindly awarded trophies to go along with our certificates of achievement! We were also delighted to share this achievement on the night with one half of our weather routing team in Router Robbie. @bearlarobb and @robinomahony were on the end of the sat phone everyday crunching the numbers to keep us safe and moving quickly so it was only right he was there to celebrate the achievement with us! Thanks again to all the incredible people who supported us throughout this enormous feat, we couldn’t have made it on our own 💛 It’s a strange feeling to close this chapter of our lives, but we’re more than excited for what’s to come! 24 Hour Training Row 🚣‍♂️💨 Last week, our team spent a few days together on the water as part of our preparation for the @worlds.toughest.row 2026. It was an incredible experience to finally get out on the water with the team and get a feel for the boat, under the guidance of the legendary Duncan Roy. During our time on the water, Jon and Martin had a tough few hours with sea sickness, but in true Coastal Commanders style, they powered through and carried on with the task at hand. We practised a 2-hour on/1-hour off pattern throughout our trip to give us a taste of how fatiguing the row will be. We know that preparing for the row will be difficult, and the race itself will be extremely challenging. However, as the Coastal Commanders, we are determined to face these challenges head-on. The Buoys have been up in Manchester to take part in the Atlantic Ocean Rowing Course, hosted by the wonderful safety team Ian and Fraser from @worlds.toughest.row It was a great opportunity to learn more about what we were undertaken and how to prepare for success and stay safe while making the journey across the ocean. In 1997 after leaving the forces, I was homeless, broke, addicted, starving & chronically mentally unwell - my parents told by the medical community I would never recover and should be placed in a mental facility ... for life. Thanks to people like YOU - through donations to the British Legion & SSAFA - I got the support I needed and have gone on to live my best life, surrounded by beautiful people & achievements. I even get up at 5am on Sundays to sit in a barrel of cold water – because I can 😁 PLEASE help me to support my fellow veterans who are still struggling with their demons.
