Last Friday, I had an appointment at the stoma clinic for measurements of support belts. On the NHS, ostomates are entitled to 3 support belts/bands/underwear a year. I've opted for an adjustable support belt to start with, and if this helps provide support, I will then consider the support bands, which are nicer to wear when going "out out."
The idea of the support belts is to prevent the stoma site from hernias or from current hernias getting worse. They can also provide comfort and support for the stoma bag when walking, exercising, and reducing stress on the body.
Yesterday, I had an appointment with the stoma nurse, and we had a long chat about some of the issues I've been having. She confirmed I have a parastomal hernia, which is something I had been trying to prevent and have been anxious about getting. Why? Because it could mean further surgery.
They don't like to operate on hernias because there's a chance they may come back. Having a stoma, you have a hole in the abdominal muscles, so the intensives can pop out and create hernias. Apparently, you can even go to bed without one and wake up in the morning with one!
I've been advised to reach out to my stoma consultant and see what she suggests. I currently feel a pulling sensation, and my stoma protrudes quite a bit when it struggles to navigate the output.
In conversation, I was told it would be my last face-to-face appointment as Tommy is 6 months old. I can't believe I've had a stoma for 6 months now. Time has flown by, and it still feels like Tommy has been with me forever. I'm gaining so much of my life back!
I will be seen yearly, but I have access to my stoma team via email or phone if I have any concerns. For example, we're still trying to find flange extenders so that I have more security with my stoma bags when out for long periods of time/swimming/hot weather. I seem to be reacting to every brand, and the stoma team are going to get their thinking caps on!
