Thank you to the amazing Amy Cooper for allowing me to share her story of her beautiful #twinlesstwin Hi there, so my little one is called Lottie, she is now a twinless twin born in April 2020. She and her sister Natalie were born at Princess Ann NICU in Southampton at just under 32 weeks. Her twin was poorly throughout pregnancy and we already knew she wouldn't be with us long. She survived for 11 hours. She kept going long enough that Lottie was able to be born safely. After a couple of days Lottie and I transferred to our local NICU in Salisbury. She was a little fighter and described as feisty by the nurses! She was only on oxygen the first few days. Then worked her way out of the incubator within a couple of weeks, in a heated cot. Lottie was discharged from NICU after only 4 weeks, when we finally got to bring our little fighter home to meet her big sister Evie for the first time. She's now a bright, warm, bubbly 4 year old. Keeping us on our toes most days. We'll always be grateful for the warmth and kindness of the NICU nurses, not only because of the awful time we were going through personally at the time, but also because it was in the midst of the first COVID lockdown and even the norm felt so unfamiliar. When we talk about preemie parenthood, we tend to focus on the struggle: 💬 ”Where are preemie moms lacking support?” 💬 ”What is the impact of the NICU on their mental health?” 💬 ”What financial barriers do they face?” I myself have gone on numerous podcasts and live news segments to raise awareness around these issues. Don’t get me wrong, we need to talk about the bad stuff. I never want to minimize the challenges of being a preemie mom. Yet, at the same time, I can’t stress how important it is to also create space for gratitude and positive reflection. Everyone wants a child that is healthy, happy, and full-term. But there is also a kind of magic that comes from having a child in the NICU. There are special, intimate moments you can only experience if you’re a mom spending hours beside your child’s isolette. And that’s worth thinking about. One of the most powerful tools I had when my daughter spent 77 days in the NICU was perspective. Even though my brain was clouded with guilt, overwhelm, and catastrophic thinking, I learned to intentionally invite positive thoughts and gratitude. I know how easy it is to blame yourself when your birth doesn’t go as planned. But I promise you, it’s not your fault. Nothing you did or didn’t do caused your baby to be born early. While we can be mindful of risk factors for preeclampsia and other conditions, it’s important to recognize that there are so many factors outside of our control. Postpartum PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder) is a reality for many, yet it often remains hidden.Postpartum PTSD is a form of PTSD that can occur after traumatic childbirth experiences. This could include emergency deliveries, unplanned C-sections, or feelings of powerlessness and fear during labor. Symptoms to Look Out For: 🌩️ Flashbacks or intrusive thoughts about the birth 🌩️ Intense anxiety and avoidance of anything related to the birth 🌩️ Difficulty bonding with your baby 🌩️ Feeling numb or detached 🌩️Hypervigilance and excessive worry, especially about your baby If you’re experiencing symptoms of postpartum PTSD, know that it’s okay to ask for help. Therapy, particularly trauma-focused therapies, can be incredibly beneficial. If someone you know might be struggling with postpartum PTSD, offer a listening ear and a supportive shoulder. Sometimes, just knowing they're not alone can make a huge difference. Remember, experiencing postpartum PTSD doesn’t make you a less capable or loving mother. Four years ago out little B came out earlier then expected, raring to go and FULL of surprises, he sure gave everyone a run for their money. We really didn’t know what we were in for when this boy arrived, before his NICU admission Daddy and I were planning on bringing him home that evening after he continued to kick butt on his glucose checks…. That is until he decided he was just too tired to breathe on his own anymore, and demand a rapid VIP visit over to his aunties in the NICU. Its still wild to me to look back on as he was active & crying just moments before cueing to feed, next thing I knew we were making the NICU our home. Thank God for such incredible staff (that I am blessed to also call my work family) we wouldn’t have our boy if it wasn’t for their quick action, skill and expertise. 💜 and not a day has gone by that we don’t appreciate their kind compassionate care. Since that first moment trailing down the hall behind his cot without any idea what was happening, we have experienced some really hard moments and really incredible ones. We didn’t know it then but our NICU stay would only be the start of the rollercoaster ride that has been this little guys life. The next couple years would bring countless tests, doctors appointments, hospital stays and A LOT of questions. Two genetic diagnoses, some super cute (and very helpful) glasses and a whole lot of time & dedication in therapy. It would challenge us with PPA/PPD and PTSD, but it would also bring us closer then ever as a family ❤️ So to all the preemie warriors, their families and to those who dedicate their lives to caring for the most precious little miracles. “We’ve walked the NICU journey twice. And after that walk it got a bit more challenging. You see others hit milestones, Drs mention they should be doing ____ already, other moms and strangers even say, “oh they can’t do ____,” and you just feel little. Yet, they know nothing of the story they’ve already endured. The comparison trap of other babies milestones are real. We see babies hitting milestones, some faster than others and some.. still trying to get it. How God showed me in this time was, it isn’t a task or check off the box as “okay this one is done next let’s hurry and get the next.” It’s much like Bible reading. It takes consistency, it takes prayer, and it takes loads of patience. He showed me how each baby is unique. Each baby has his or her own strengths and it’s all through the power of God that their milestones can be used to glorify HIS GREAT NAME. Mama, I see you. I see the endless work you put in to help your baby succeed. I see the tears you shed as you feel like a failure, BUT YOU ARE NOT. I see the doubts that try to get thrown at you and I see the pain inside you hide and hold in. But you’re not alone. God can and WILL use each and everyone of our babies milestones to show the good work of the Lord. It will show and help more of us mamas to release the comparison trap and instead, pray over these areas they need more help in. Instead He equips us as parents without realizing we are being equipped in these seasons of therapies and help they need. Keep the hope alive. Keep you faith anchored into the one who never wavers. In a recent article by @pagesix, @priyankachopra (a fellow NICU mom) talked about how, despite how overwhelmed and scared she was in the hospital, she felt like she had to be strong for her daughter. 🏥 Priyanka said, “I don’t think it was our test. I think it was her test. I realized very, very early that I did not have the luxury to be scared or to be weak because she was scared and weak. And I had to be her strength as her mom. I needed to make her feel at every given moment that she’s not alone … that we’ve got her.” As NICU moms, it’s so refreshing to see the stories of celebrities we know and recognize going through a similar journey. I remember giving birth to Jenna and feeling unsure about whether I would have the strength and courage to put one foot in front of the other every day in the NICU. Yet somehow, some way, I found it inside myself to put my fears aside and check my feelings at the door. Too often, we underestimate our strength. Part 1 of NICU days 🥲 Sometimes birth doesn’t go as planned and that is okay. There’s so much talk around having “the perfect birth plan” but at the end of the day, your babe is going to come how they want. It is important to know everything you can say yes to, everything you can say no to & everything you get to question & this is why having a birth doula is so important. This birth went in the wrong direction due to provider error. I will never share any names on here but just bring awareness to knowing how essential it is to trust the human birthing your angel baby. It was dark, about 2am when my client’s provider came into the room. It wasn’t the one that was giving care prenatally, she was just on call that early, cool morning. She came into the room, immediately asked if she could give a cervical check and things started to go south from there There weren’t any lights on but I was right by my clients side and all of a sudden she states “we need to go to emergency c section. I broke your water and now we have a prolapse cord” my heart sank. I didn’t even notice she had the annihook in her hand… this is a thin, plastic tool used to rupture your membranes (break your water) An amnihook is about 12 inches long with a curved hook at the top. There was no asking if she could break my clients water, nor did the provider own up to using the amnihook until I spoke up asking what happened. The provider also knew my client was going for a unmedicated/no intervention birth An umbilical cord prolapse happens when the umbilical cord slips down in front of the baby after the waters have broken. The cord can then come through the open cervix (entrance of the womb). It usually happens during labour but can occur when the waters break before labour starts- this is extremely dangerous & requires quick action Why is it an emergency? When the umbilical cord prolapses, it can be squeezed by the baby or the womb during a contraction. This can reduce the amount of blood flowing through the cord and so reduce the oxygen supply to the baby. The baby may need to be delivered immediately to prevent the lack of oxygen causing long-term harm or death of the baby
