So today, we talk about the bells that toll... Everyone loves bells ringing before church on a Sunday morning or at a wedding.... A special tradition. The bell that hangs in the NG church tower in Wakkerstroom from the 1800s, which is still rung these days is a whopping 1 metre in height and 1.2m across. It is made from a bronze alloy, which is ½ cm thick and has a beautiful lace pattern around the top and bottom edges. It has a German inscription inside, translated to "Cast by GA Jauck in Leipzig in 1890" . The 1912 Norman & Beard pneumatic organ that was bought for the Wakkerstroom NG Church is still being used today in 2024, 112 years later. This magnificent instrument not only sounds impressive but when one sees it's construction, one can only be in awe of its brilliance. It has 1220 pipes varying in size from as thin as a half a pencil, to the width of a person. Extra supports were added to strengthen the gallery before its installation. Professor F W Jannasch from the SA Conservatorium of Music in Stellenbosch played at the inauguration of the organ in 1913. In the early years the organ was tuned twice a year by a Mr Todd, the organ tuner. This tradition continues, and Hans Admiraal from Gauteng now tunes the organ. In 1911 a new organ was purchased for the Wakkerstroom NG Church. This turned out to be not just any old organ, but a pneumatic action powered organ by Norman & Beard. It worked with air pressure and was purchased from Cooper, Gill and Tomkins at a cost of 1400 pounds, a very large sum in those days. And when you see the workings of the organ, you will understand just why, it’s a majestic instrument. It arrived, in crates, on 30 October 1912, via the Union Castle steam ship company, and then train to Volksrust, before being loaded on an ox wagon to Wakkerstroom. What's a church without music? At first a canto led the singing at the Wakkerstroom NG Church, then a harmonium was used, before the church got an organ. It was an 896 pipe Stroebel Brothers instrument, which was used for the inauguration ceremony in 1891, but the congregation felt that the organ was not good, and so reverted to playing on the harmonium for celebrations of the 50th year of the church. On 21 October 1911 the church minutes show that the congregation decided to purchase a new organ. This turned out to be not just any old organ. Twin wedding memories from 1930 at the Wakkerstroom NG Church The Daneel sisters Elizabeth (known as Lila), and Helen were the the only daughters of Hannie nee Repsold (Moll) and Adriaan J Daneel. Both sisters married minsters, whose husbands had both qualified in Holland. It was a double wedding for Ds Gerdener at the Wakkerstroom NG Kerk on 20 December 1930, when Elizabeth Daneel married Titus Kritzinger, and Helen Daneel married Phil Bothma, from the Orange Free State. Wakkerstroom NG Kerk.... During repairs and alterations from 1944 to 1946 done by FP van Heerden the gothic spire was altered to an octagonal shape, the gables were removed, and the clock moved upwards, with a window replacing it. The wooden pulpit and wooden galleries were removed, leaving only the original wooden baptismal font. The original oil lamps were removed and replaced with electric lamps. These alterations inside and out, are the reason why this still beautiful architectural building has not been able to attain National Monument status. When the spire was altered, there were some pieces of sandstone removed. They were kept at the Oppikoppi museum of Chris Smit (since closed), until purchased at the museum auction by Mark Kotze. On the site of the NG church is a memorial to the Wakkerstroom Commando’s from the First Anglo Boer. There were 67 fallen soldiers and 8 who died in prison of war camps. It was built, as part of the 1938 countrywide celebrations to commemorate the Great Trek. Being a Voortrekker town, Wakkerstroom was included in this procession, as wagons followed the footsteps of their forefathers. According to Mari Breytenbach, in her book “Moreson se Blommetjies” the position in front of the church, on church grounds was chosen because the church was the anchor and the symbol of life. The 2 columns, joined with an arch symbolised the open door to the interior of South Africa, and a voortrekker stands in front with his only weapon in his hand. The rifle was later stolen and has since been replaced with a wooden firearm. If you were wondering about the footprints in the concrete under the archway, it was Mari’s father and brother Ben who drove an ox wagon with oxen under the arch, through the wet cement. A Paintbrush saves the church tower! Over the years, the 33m Church tower became a concern and was found to no longer be waterproof. The organ and clock were being damaged. There were also signs that the wooden tower structure was also damaged. Sarel Kritzinger, a civil engineer examined the tower, and gave his report. Eben Meus (who worked for Jim Bolt) went up the tower in the presence of Chris Maritz, only to rush down the steps again. He was very upset as when he removed some of the rotten wood, he noticed that the vertical supports (trussers) were also so badly rotten, that he believed the tower could fall on him. When he went back, he found a paintbrush strategically lodged near the floor, and it had not rotted away, so supporting the structure. There is an interesting story about one man in particular who was involved in the building of the NG Church in Wakkerstroom. This young Brit, was so impressed with the Wakkerstroom hospitality that he fought the war on the side of the Boers. Oliver 'Jack' Hindon was born in Stirling, Scotland, on 20 April 1874, and risked his life during the battle of Spioenkop. He later headed many attacks on British trains throughout the country. To commemorate his brave deeds, the Jack Hindon Medal was instituted on 24 February 1970. At 14, Jack had joined the British army and came to South Africa from Britain as a ‘drummer’ boy, with his father, who was in the army to fight in the Anglo-Boer war. His regiment was transferred to Zululand where he was subjected to ill-treatment by a sergeant-major and he and a few of the other ‘boys’ deserted. In 1888 he decided to walk to the gold fields. En route between the towns of Utrecht and Wakkerstroom he arrived at a farmhouse where he asked to stay for the night. He was so overwhelmed by the Boer lady’s kindness who moved her son out of his room, to give Jack a room for the night. She gave him a meal, and food for the road the following day. Jack became a Boer supporter from then onwards. The next day he arrived in Wakkerstroom and saw that they were building the NG Church, and he decided to help. He became a stone mason, staying for 2 years, until the church was complete. He joined the war effort alongside the Boers and associated himself fully with their cause. This week we continue the history of the NG Church Wakkerstroom The architect of the Wakkerstroom NG Church was Geers and Geers. (South African architects of Dutch origin who specialised in churches). Construction started in 1888 with the land being officially transferred into the church’s name on 2 July. The builder and engineer, Antonie L Klute finished construction in 1891. Klute was a master stone mason, who also built the Paul Kruger bridge, and later the Wakkerstroom Court house. The sandstone used for the building of the church came from farm Saxony, near the slang river, near Zaaihoek. The corner stone of the property was laid by Commander General Piet J Joubert on 27 October 1888, and can be seen on the right-hand side of the main entrance doors. The magnificent building was estimated to have cost 13400 pounds, a very large sum of money in those days. At the 4-day inauguration celebrations over Christmas 1891, there were about 1500 people and 850 vehicles of all kinds surrounding the church. Following the story of the history of the Wakkerstroom NG Church.... Photos of the original church, and a current photo taken in April 2024 The church that Ackerman came to was on the site of the current church hall, on the corner of Engelbrecht st and Market st, now van Riebeeck. In 1861 a commission had been set up to build 4 walls with a thatch roof. It was completed by 1863. That meant, that at the time of Ackerman’s arrival, there was a building but no parsonage. He and his wife stayed with various congregation members “kuier” “kuier”, so to speak, until two rooms were added onto the building for later use as a vestry and office. This cramped space was where they moved into. According to tradition, the church building was a multipurpose building; and during the cold winter months when snow lay on the ground the villagers were said to herd sheep and cattle into the building. It is minuted that in August 1869, so much damage was done by the animals that 39 pounds was collected to do the repairs to the building. Then only 2 days later, at another meeting they decided to build a new church, and a building committee was nominated, headed by General Piet Joubert with AA o Reiley, F Jansen van Rensburg and P Jansen van Rensburg. Only in 1874, was a church built on the foundations of the original 4 walled church. In 1879 the walls were raised by 3 foot and the thatch was removed and replaced with zinc roof sheets. This may have been when the extra rooms for Ds Ackerman were added. The building was consecrated on 3 July 1880. By the 1900s, after the big church had been built, the building fell into disrepair and the youth of the church undertook to demolish and rebuild the church, in the same shape, to be used by the youth. They employed master builder Mathinus Breytenbach, and was known as the Jongelingsaal. In the grounds of the NG Church in Wakkerstroom, you will find the grave and memorial to the first minister of the church. Yes, Italy has the leaning tower of Pisa, and Wakkerstroom has its own leaning memorial! The congregation was established in 1861 and made use of relief ministers from the surrounding areas such as D.van der Hoff and MC van Warmelo who travelled from Potchefstroom from time to time. The Wakkerstroom church goers, being so few, could not afford to pay for a permanent minster, but as soon as it was said that ministers would be paid by a state fund, the community voted for their own minister. Ds Daniel Petrus Ackerman, who was born in Richmond in the Cape on 12 April 1849, had finished his studies in Paarl and was offered two posts, one in his home town of Richmond, and the other in Martinus Wesselstroom (now Wakkerstroom). He decided on the later, but before he embarked on the long oxwagon trip he married Hester Magdelene van Blerk. They arrived in November 1874, and he was confirmed as Dominee on 9 January 1875, of the then Nederduits Herformte kerk. This was Ds Ackerman only post. He was a much loved predikant and remained as such until he died on holiday at the Strand in August 1916. 4/13/365. Gereformeerde Kerk Durban-Wes. Dickens Road, Bellair Durban. Hallen, Theron & Partners Inc (1972). There's a book (volumes) to be had on architect Hans Hallen alone; he was prolific during his hometown Durban phase, from roughly the late 1950s to 1980 in association with numerous partners. So much so, I'll cover HH down the road in more detail. As I'm on a NG Kerk bent, here's one you may not have seen... Discovered via an obscure Corobrik link / whom I assume, provided the off-white bricks for the project. Took me multiple attempts to gain access to the site (shout-out to Geoff the caretaker who opened up for me). A small typical 1970s style sacral building for a niche Durban Afrikaans suburban congregation in period. I'm guessing a restricted budget build, as the interior is more warehouse-like than church-like. That said, the local synod commissioned a heavyweight practice as the architect. Changing demographics nowadays means a reduced congregation of around 60 worshipers, under the Revival Fellowship banner. Though well kept under trying conditions (like my St Cyprian's post, theft has been a huge problem here too), I walked around doing the math. Eish! *To note is the side facade brick coursework which follows the angled rising roofline (not ground level) which I've not seen before. The History and Heart of Kuils River. The church, NG Kerk - Kuils River (Dutch Reformed Church), the library and the post office has played a big part of the history and formed a big part of the community. These are not simply buildings.
