Slim Cessna's Auto Club - Cipher (2008 - gothic country, alt-country, americana, country rock, country gospel) "Dysentery and dissent on the waning Oregon Trail" Slim Cessna's Auto Club is a murder of crows to Michael Gira's bevy of Swans. Both of these avian artists take flight through the wide-open plains of North America, but where the latter band lie low in the groaning gulches of gothic country's deepest shadows, the former flow with the rivers and valleys of the United States' largest and proudest natural monuments. 2008's Cipher joins these high peaks and hectic woods as the umpteenth wonder of the world, one whose features shift like the winds with the mood of its witnesses. This record is an outlaw like no other, a creaking bone xylophone in the greatest ghostly orchestra known to the afterlife of man. There's no overestimating the combined power of Slim Cessna and Jay Munly. After an eerie chanting intro and its immediate successor establish a sense of patriotism for the soil and the sky rather than the nation to which they belong, this exhaust-powered Auto Club steer into yodelling ribbits with the deceptively jaunty All About the Bullfrog in Three Verses and North-South divides with the dread-inducing Americadio. Additional updates on Cipher's short prologue are peppered throughout the rest of the LP, following its parenthetical title of Arms with a further trilogy describing the nervous movements of Legs, Teeth, and Faith. Each new take on the track introduces a different instrumental atmosphere, clacking like the hooves of startled horses and warning of the tone of songs to come. The Wild West grows wilder with every banjo-backed outburst that Cessna and Munly make together in the mineshaft. Despite their upbeat rhythms, Children of the Lord and Ladies in the Know are packed with tension. Jesus Is in My Body - My Body Has Let Me Down skips gravestones over avalanching post-rock hysteria. Before Slim Cessna's Auto Club bow out of their self-stirred American country chaos, final farewell That Fierce Cow Is Common Sense in a Country Dress lassos up every little straggling panic in its landscape- one last vision of a dust bowl apocalypse. ★★★★½

Cake - Fashion Nugget (1996 - alternative rock, pop rock, funk rock, alt-country, geek rock) "A salt and pepper shaker specifically designed to make you sneeze" For better or for worse, there appears to have been a considerable segment of alternative rock that the world has accidentally left in the dust. While a great deal of the genre's popular acts remain subtly influential, they stay this way out of simple coincidence rather than any huge necessity. As it happens, Cake is one of those bands teetering on the precipice between continued semi-relevance and the less desirable status of a mere forgettable footnote. Fashion Nugget is far from a one-hit wonder of an album- in fact, the whole thing went platinum just half a year after its initial release- but as the most popular effort from Cake, it is the most deserving of the discussion around the group's survival rate in recent alt-rock history. Despite accumulating millions of streams on modern-day apps and websites, this record symbolizes a strange spot in nineties pop culture where the commercialization of nerd media and the otherization of nerds butted heads. Fashion Nugget sings about all male isolation, engineering, campout-style natural imagery, and wealth's material gains- all things that could be interpreted in the typical, vaguely toxic definition of masculinity circa 1996, but they are generally intended as themes of satire and self-awareness. Whether one takes these tracks at face value or views them in a more thoughtful context, it's clear that there is more to Cake's songwriting than what initially meets the ear. Fashion Nugget sometimes struggles to expand on the exact meaning of its lyrics, especially in the short but brusque Race Car Ya-Yas and the living parental advisory sticker that is Nugget itself, but the record often compromises on an instrumental basis as well. Slacker rock, earthy funk, and random lapses of country all fight for the same space, ending in a pileup of sounds that, when mixed with an uncertain hub of subject matter, can come off alienating rather than intriguing or catchy. Cake are decades past their prime, but at least they're popular within an unpopular phase. ★★½

It’s time to talk about Taylor Swift! I reviewed her latest album (you’ll have to read it to find out if I liked it or not) and wrote about two artists so strong in their songwriting, that I would fairly call them poets: Waxahatchee (Katie Crutchfield) and Adrianne Lenker. Feel free to yell at me if you disagreeeee. Enjoy! 🔗 in bio✨🖋️✨

‘two days of horror’ by Wun Two. I think this was one of the first songs added to the Spooky Lofi playlist. I really love how creepy and unsettling it sounds. This song manages to strike that perfect balance between being unsettling but also still being chill and I think that is a difficult balance to strike because unsettling vibes can tend to naturally cancel out relaxing ones. I think it’s really impressive this song manages to balance the two so well. If you’re looking for a Spooky Lofi song that has more of a horror/scary feel to it whilst still retaining that kinda chill/relaxing vibe, I’d definitely give this song a listen!! 🧡 #songrecommendation #spookylofi #spookybeats #musicrecommendation #lofi

Nobuko Hori - Xtoyourmilkyhair (2007 - electroacoustic, sound collage, glitch, flashcore, noise, glitch pop, experimental, art pop) "The meeting point between lost loves pain and pleasure" Xtoyourmilkyhair begins with the high-pitched squealing of what may as well be a creaky window in need of a good greasing. The glass tilts out of its frame as if shoved aside by some harsh yet invisible wind, scraping against bits of metal and wood with wretched shrieks of dread-inducing friction. A woman's voice floats over the jagged pane, her words trying to mend its sharp corners and fractured webs. This is just the way in which Nobuko Hori introduces herself. The full conversation is deeper, louder, and much, much crazier. It's easy to pass off this record as something that is only experimental for the sake of sounding strange. Surface-level listens will likely at least consider the possibility, informed at first by the cracked landscape of Kuk's groaning glaze and then by subsequent spirals of din later on in the LP. Only an open mind is guaranteed to see some more value in what originally appears to be a cacophony. When the window of this opening track has been fixed, the portal leads to some of the most bizarre music that could ever masquerade as pop. For forty-one minutes and a handful of speedy seconds, audiences find themselves drowning in a vortex of electronic conflicts on behalf of Nobuko Hori herself. Conventional beauty is all but forgotten as songs like the ethereal Sukinan and the bumpy Hug or Kiss Me make their way onto the record's rickety windowsill. Even at its most freakish, Xtoyourmilkyhair isn't simply weird for the hell of it. Nobuko Hori's only solo project pits all the world's oddest phenomenons against each other in an arena only open to the most curious eyes and ears. The near-opaque bubble where Xtoyourmilkyhair survives is bursting with avant-garde pop and intelligent dance music, forever staying twelve steps ahead of its listeners and its peers in whatever scene or style one could apply to the album's evolving sound. At the end of the chaotic day, these pieces sit in a class by themselves. It's not a lonely life, but a patient one. ★★★½

Review : Artist : Swans Album : Filth Genres : Noise Rock, No Wave, Industrial Rock, Industrial Year : 1983 Cover Rating : 7.5/10 11 / 16 A sewage system of pipes, leading to unfiltered, corrosive muck. Swans’ debut album “Filth” is a pummeling assault front to back. The lead, and formal introduction to the band is of no remorse, and the state of their surroundings highlight the essence of this LP. Generally speaking, the fact of why this sounds exactly like the title of the record is because of Michael Gira’s own past, and the receiving end of his fascinations, which was machinery at the time. The eternal ringing, and metal chunks clashing on one another is a perfect way to paint a picture for “Filth”, albeit the final results will take a couple milliliters of blood from your system. Mindfulness is thrown out the window at this point, no one, and none are safe from the beating this album pursues, and it will persist in every single moment to leave you unrecognizable. By far the most indescribable feeling of this album is of a dense, unpredictable, and relentless action that has a vein popping out due to the anger boiling within. A smidge of metric is left in a clear view, but with the industrial nature of “Filth”, it’s barely considered in a structured form. The band fulfills the essence of the emerging No Wave scene, portraying the decaying mindset of a madman, purely locking in the fury in their surroundings, and justifying every action with a thrashing motion. The insanity being injected by a deranged instrumentation is quick to deter any, but the Swans sound is still there somewhere. Even in their beginnings, all of the albums in the trilogy are being mirrored in the past. Take it as you want, but “Filth” is the route of Swans, and it only expanded ad infinitum to astronomical levels of spirituality, and in conjunction with light spearing darkness. The rawness compared to the lasting iceberg of Swans is to be tipped over in their debut, but it only seems like deep water in all directions. “Filth” prepares Swans, and this deserves the greater acclaim. Even if it is hard to concentrate on what is happening half the time. Rating : Decent 8

This album rules! Judas Priest, "Defenders of the Faith". "Defenders of the Faith" is the ninth studio album by English heavy metal band Judas Priest, released on 13 January 1984 in the US 13 and on 20 January 1984 in the UK.The album was certified platinum by the RIAA, and spawned the singles "Freewheel Burning", "Some Heads Are Gonna Roll", and "Love Bites". Stylistically, "Defenders of the Faith" did not greatly depart from its predecessor and featured a similar formula of short, up-tempo metal anthems with stadium shout-along choruses. The cover art by Doug Johnson (who also designed the Hellion in "Screaming for Vengeance") depicts the Metallian. The back cover contains a message "Rising from darkness where Hell hath no mercy and the screams for vengeance echo on forever. Only those who keep the faith shall escape the wrath of the Metallian ... Master of all metal". "Freewheel Burning", "Some Heads Are Gonna Roll" y "Love Bites". At the beginning of last month I urged you to check out the brilliant Fast Blood, who beautifully combine the attitude, blasts of energy and crunchy fuzz of punk with the hefty riffs, earworm hooks and anthemic melody of alternative rock. Hopefully you had a chance to listen, but if not then there’s good news; their debut album ‘Sunny Blunts’ is out today, and it’s awesome 🔥 As I said in my recommendation, there’s so much personality, character, grit and energy to the songs that they blow through your ears like a ferocious blast of fresh air, so make some time to check this album out 👍🏼 . Head to wherever you stream your music to get into it, and if vinyl is your thing, Sunny Blunts will be released on a limited run of 250 on coloured vinyl, hit the link in their bio to pre-order a your copy, which should be shipping next month sometime (but continue to check their socials for more info on that) . Don’t forget, if you like what you hear then let them know by leaving a comment on their posts and sharing their music 👍🏼 . . . . #fastblood #indiepunk #punk #newcastle #newcastleband #newcastlemusicscene #musiclover #musicrecommendation #musicreview #independentband #grassrootsmusic #indierockband #indieband #alternativemusic #alternativerock #discovermusic #indieartist #indie #newmusicfriday

Back in January I recommended that you should go and check out the the brilliant band Camens, describing their music as “…effervescent and punchy, so upbeat, so full of energy and movement and stacked to the rafters with hooks…loaded with perfectly polished danceable melodies that land like precision missiles. Fans of bands like the Reytons the Lathums, the Snuts and plenty more will find so much to love about Camens…” . If you missed my original recommendation and you’re not all over these guys already then today is a great day for you to to be seeing this post, as their incredible debut album Work/Life/Balance‘ is out today 🔥 . The Funky new single is produced by J Lloyd of Jungle and long time producer James Skelly of The Coral. Blossoms frontman Tom Ogden said “We’ve always been big fans of Jungle so we reached out to them last year and this was the first song we worked on, it came together in a few hours.” This new single is a new direction for the band, it’s different to previous songs yet it still holds the Blossoms sound to its core. It’s everything you want out of a Blossoms track and the added funk direction is definitely something I look forward to hearing more of. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Artist: Blossoms Song: What Can I Say After I’m Sorry ————————— 📸 @ogden.ewan ————————— #blossoms #indiepop #ukindie #songreview #musicreview #blog #blogpost #musicreviewer #newmusic #newmusicartist #newmusicdiscovery #musicrecommendation #songreviews #musicblog #musicblogger #musicblogs #indiemusic #indie #indierock #vinylcommunity

Flipper's Guitar - Three Cheers for Our Side (海へ行くつもりじゃなかった) (1989 - twee pop, shibuya-kei, neo-acoustic, jangle pop, sunshine pop, sophisti-pop, bossa nova, psychedelic pop) "Hopping on and off a bongo as if it were a trampoline" Traveling backward through an artist's discography is like living a nocturnal life. You begin your experience at what most people would perceive to be the end of the journey, opening your eyes against the lid of the night sky and marveling at the stars above. The next step is staying awake through the witching hour, the long moments in which dawn has not yet reared its head over the horizon. Finally, the day arrives with a whole new wealth of information, quite literally illuminating the audience in bouts of musical bliss. This was my personal experience with Flipper's Guitar, a Tokyo group with an extremely interesting catalog and an extremely fast-paced lifespan. Having been initiated into this cult of the Shibuya-kei pop scene of inner Japan by the kaleidoscopic polka dots of their third, final, and most frequently revered LP, I worked through the ensemble's body of work in reverse. Camera Talk's middle child magic made up a similar sense of pre-sunrise delight, preceding the all-popular evening of Doctor Head's World Tower but developing on the rudimentary delights that daylight has in store. After appreciating these two times for what they were, I made my way back to where it all began- the bright and merry Three Cheers for Our Side. The debut LP from Flipper's Guitar is flexible like a rubber band, snapping between Western influences of twee and jangly jazz and a Japanese subgenre by the name of neo-acoustic pop. The makeshift Shibuya-kei goodness of it all is deserving of a morning shine. The space between Three Cheers for Our Side and Camera Talk is far closer than the space between either record and the grand finale of Flipper's Guitar, but it is this first album that most accurately depicts the band's sunny personality and upbeat style. One of Tokyo's coolest talents got off to a good start with this project, and its warming rays feel even nicer when encountered on an inverted timeline of educational entertainment. ★★★½

. . . . #albumdeldia #albumoftheday #albumreview #musicreview #reseñasmusicales #criticamusical #musicrecommendation #maltacaramelo #indie #indiepop #indierock #synthpop

Bing & Ruth - Tomorrow Was the Golden Age (2014 - ambient, minimalism, drone, electroacoustic, tape music, modern classical) "Crying in a church full of musty vintage clothing" Bing & Ruth make ambient music for people who aren't yet sure if they like ambient music. This is both a good and bad thing. On one hand, the New York ensemble (none of whom are named either Bing or Ruth, as the name of the group is actually a literary reference) are quite clearly skilled at what they do in the realms of modern classical music in a non-orchestral context. Pianist David Moore began the project in his twenties, bringing on more influences and instrumentalists with the passage of time, and together, these creators curate atmospheres of a highly intellectual nature. On the other hand, it is for this very reason that Bing & Ruth's mentorship of their tape manipulations and spaced-out drones can cross a hazardous path. These compositions could easily make or break a prospective future fan of minimalist ambience, but it is that latter possibility which poses a threat to those who have not yet decided upon a stance in relation to the genre. 2014 release Tomorrow Was the Golden Age often operates along a route of undeniable beauty, learning from Reich and Glass as well as a more experimental area of electroacoustic nomadism, but the album is too caught up in its own identity to settle on something specific. There are several factors to the confusion that this record encounters. Bing & Ruth seem to strike a constant compromise between the brilliance of classical ambient's true potential and a less enthusiastic version of its environmental worldbuilding. David Moore's piano travels far in Warble and Police Police Police Police Police, but the bandleader takes a backseat strangely frequently across the hour-long performance. Just Like the First Time, Strange Wind, and We Are on the Side of Angels all descend into distracted drones, which would work in other contexts but which fail to bring anything to the table in this specific suite. Tomorrow Was the Golden Age is pretty, a decent starter pack to ambient music, but there are more focused summaries of the style than this. ★★★

Much, too much power to hold… Released on February 16th, 2024, Mind Out Of Mind is the second studio album by American #progressiverock band @kmonoband and my point of entry to their fabulous music. K’mono’s sophomore album, “Mind Out of Mind”, is a resplendent homage to 70’s progressive rock, with a modern twist. The phrasing, intricate instrumentation, and groovy rhythms evoke the spirit of classic prog, while subtle vocal harmonies and pop sensibilities nod to The Beatles. The album’s sound is reminiscent of Porcupine Tree’s melodic moments, MGMT’s psychedelic nuances, and Moon Safari’s symphonic majesty. Saga’s quirkiness and Genesis/King Crimson’s epic scope also make appearances. The musicianship is exceptional, with fat, groovy bass lines, melodic and angular guitars, and driving percussion. The vocalization is outstanding, showcasing a powerful and expressive range. Overall, “Mind Out of Mind” is a stupendous album that will undoubtedly contend for album of the year. This power trio is just beginning to make waves, and their sophomore effort has set the bar high for future releases. Prog fans, take note: K’mono is a force to be reckoned with!… highly recommended, cheers! #rockprogresivo #rocksinfonico #progrock #progrockcommunity #progrockband #albumoftheyear #albumoftheday #musicrecommendation #albumcover #heavyprog #symphonicprog #newmusic #minneapolis #progressiverockband #progressiverockcommunity #album

On 3rd May 1968 the Jimi Hendrix Experience recorded "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)". Written by Jimi Hendrix the song appears as the final track on their third studio album, "Electric Ladyland". The track includes improvised guitar and vocals from Hendrix, backed by Noel Redding on bass and Mitch Mitchell on drums. The song is one of Hendrix's best known; it was a feature of his concert performances throughout his career, and several live renditions were recorded and released on later albums. After his death in 1970, Track Records released the song as a single in the UK using the title "Voodoo Chile". It became Hendrix's only number one single on the UK Singles Chart, reaching the top position during the week of November 15th 1970. Rolling Stone magazine included the song at number 101 on their original 2004 list of the "500 Greatest Songs of All Time". . . . . . . #musicrecommendation #musichistory #musiclover #rockmusic #fridayrocks #schoolofrock #psychedelicrock #classicrock #60smusic #jimihendrix #jimihendrixexperience #voodoochild #voodoochile #rockerdog #dogslovemusictoo #corgisofinstagram #basilthejukeboxcorgi #jukeboxcorgi
