I don’t know about you, but my idea of the good life is sitting in a sunny Tuscan square under the campanile, sipping my limoncello. Failing that, how about Burrells Wharf? In the C19, this was an ironworks notable for the construction and launching of Brunel’s great white elephant, the SS Great Eastern. Significant elements of the launch slipway still exist. And in C20, through to the mid-1980s, Burrells became a pigment factory, creating colour for paints and dyes. The 1860 buildings are listed Grade II, and now comprise residential units, grouped around a pleasing piazza. They’re augmented by more modern (and less distinguished) blocks, and by Tower Hamlets’ ubiquitous purple bins. So much history on the Isle of Dogs peninsular has been obliterated, by war, property developers, and the passage of time. Burrells Wharf is cleaned up and sanitised today, but it still allows us a small sense of what the workshops and riverfront shipyards once looked like. A long walk along The Thames today. I came across the remains of the Millwall Iron Works. It was here that the Isambard Kingdom Brunel designed ship SS Great Eastern was built. Launched sideways; eventually at Millwall Ironworks on the Thames 1858 and the biggest ship in her day, driven by sail, paddle wheels and screw propeller. She did many trips to America. But in 1866 she was converted to carry and lay the first Transatlantic Telegraph Cable. Her end was sad, as a floating hoarding on the Mersey at Liverpool, eventually broken up on the beach . Another new one started for a great client of ours, Riverway House and Gate House at Burrell’s Wharf are architecturally listed as ‘buildings of special interest or importance’. In the 19th century Millwall Iron Works had been built and later John Scott Russell bought the works and was instrumental in the building of ‘The SS Great Eastern’ and launched it there too. The SS Great Eastern was built in 1858, the largest ship ever designed (by Isambard Brunel) and built until the 20th century, and was instrumental in laying the first transatlantic cable (between Valentia Island and Heart's Content). Ironically, it was also the first ship to be scrapped by a wrecking ball.
