A view from the Docks ⚓️ This is one of favourite spots to stand on the river, in one way, it feels like a very ancient view of the water that has given London life for almost 2000 years. But on the other hand, it’s a radically different view to when the Docks were still open, serving the busiest port in the world. The final closure in 1981 eventually led to the development we see today that includes Canary Wharf and its glass skyscrapers. When I speak to people today in the area, they tell stories of the “old days” and it’s clear they miss the old way of life of the Docklands and the Isle of Dogs. I think it’s still a magical place, but only if we keep the stories and the people alive! Here it is! After much faffing around, up and down ladders, never evening straightening, and a few hook hiccups along the way, my exhibition at the Clock Tower Cafe (@clock.tower.cafe )in Croydon is now up and open! All of these artworks are based around London. I often find London quite an overwhelming place with how busy and non-stop it is (particularly as I've spent so many years living in the countryside and out of cities), but these artwork depict glimpses of beauty that I find within it. Most of the work up on display is developed from my sketches along the London Docklands, where the new, shiny, rigid buildings of places like Canary Wharf live alongside the docklands older mechanical structures, overlapping and warping into interesting shapes that I've pulled into my art. Search me, guv: on my late eighties LDDC plan of Wapping, these cheerfully coloured blocks of flats at East Quay - opposite Tobacco Dock, and clearly drawing on old wharf forms - were by Ideal Homes. Or Laing. Or Barrett East London. Anyway, they’re classic Toytown Docklands PoMo, a style that is terminally unfashionable at the moment (and has been for about thirty years), but, cards on the table, I love this stuff. I have no idea whether the apartments provide a great lifestyle experience, but those zippy colours put an idiot grin on my old visage. They’re just around the corner from the venerable Raines House school building, founded by a local brewer in 1719, and just around another corner from the Princess Court Business Park, a classic of the Reductive Commercial PoMo-Lite style. Wapping’s dense cheek-by-jowelness is one of its principal delights. Finally experienced the London Marathon atmosphere in person on Sunday after decades of watching on TV. It's something we've fancied doing for a while but almost decided against it again this year because of our two Palladium visits last weekend, but then we saw the good weather forecast and had nothing else planned, so took the plunge. We've got to know London very well over the past few years and most of the Marathon route takes place in areas we've visited often, so we came up with the plan of following the mass runners from the start in Greenwich to the end at Buckingham Palace. Better than standing in the same spot for hours like some recent events. On the whole, it went to plan. There were a couple of places which were out of bounds to the public (the start and finish lines) and others which were too crowded to even attempt to get near (Cutty Sark, Tower Bridge), but we managed to get as close as possible to the iconic locations and spent a good few hours around Canary Wharf, one of the best viewing points on the route. As is often the case with this kind of event, it's sometimes a case of being in the right place at the right time. We lucked out near Big Ben, when the stewards ushered us into a crossing pen and we were briefly up close with the mass runners as they entered the home stretch. Obviously we saw a lot less of the race this way than we would have done on television, but the pay-off was being able to soak up the friendly atmosphere, mingle with the runners and see the things they don't show you on TV (like the mile-long, uphill walk they all have to do before they even start running). But best of all, it was nice to have a break from the BBC's pushy parent style of presenting sport these days, where they can't go five minutes without subjecting the viewer to some casual nudging and forced inspiration. Would definitely do it again, plans permitting and weather dependant (it would have been much less fun in the rain), and it's the kind of thing that would be a different experience each time. Really pleased to have ticked another thing off the "making up for lost time" list.

George Clark’s latest film, Sunless Haven (2024) will premiere at the opening of the 14th edition of Open City Documentary Festival at the ICA on Wednesday 24 April. The premiere will be followed by a discussion between George Clark and Simeon Koole, chaired by May Adadol Ingawanij. There will also be a dedicated walk in the docklands to visit historical sites on Sunday 28 April. Sunless Haven was commissioned by historians Simeon Koole and Ben Mechen as part of the AHRC funded project Within Worlds. The film was was made by George Clark, in collaboration with sound artist (and CREAM PhD alum) Jol Thoms and performance artist Yarli Allison. Focusing on echoes and traces of the past in the present, the project explores how film can be a tool to imagine the experiences in, around and through the London Docklands at the turn of the 20th century. Animating a host of dispersed fragments from historical documents to architectural remnants and the river, Sunless Haven looks at the docklands as a resonant chamber connecting desperate worlds. Open City Documentary Festival also closes with a special screening of Leila and the Wolves (dir. Heiny Srour), co-presented with Cinenova. The screening will be introduced by CREAM PhD researcher, Nadia Yahlom. Cause it's hard, the only life I've ever known. But the lord knows how I love… Tobacco Dock. The London Docks were three interconnected docks that opened in Wapping around 1800. They were constructed to move high-value and dutiable goods (ivory, wine, coffee etc) away from the river wharves and into a more controlled space. The central dock was Tobacco Dock, for which a superb warehouse was designed by John Rennie (who also gave us the original Waterloo Bridge). The London Docks closed in the 1960s and were largely filled in, but the warehouse at Tobacco Dock survived, and was listed Grade I. It’s that good. Plans emerged in the 1980s to transform Tobacco Dock into “the Covent Garden of East London”. The architecture was ideal, Terry Farrell did the requisite farrelling, and the new mall opened in 1989. It even had a pair of repro sailing ships and its own PoMo multi-storey car park. What more could you wish for? Well, customers. There weren’t any, and the dream died after a couple of years. 35 years later, Tobacco Dock has managed not to become a luxury hotel, but has operated as an events venue and conference centre, and now there’s talk of it becoming an “entrepreneurial tech accelerator and co-working space”. Let’s hope a permanent role is found - and that the public can once again get closer to this unique space.
