compleanni: 2 Agosto 1987 Gli australiani MIDNIGHT OIL sono sempre stati difficili da inquadrare musicalmente. Inizi ai limiti del punk nel debutto datato 1978, roots rock con chitarre hard nei dischi seguenti, quando arrivarono gli anni ottanta si adeguarono a synth, new wave, pop, accrescendo la componente melodica a grattare gli spigoli degli inizi, poi da questo disco in avanti la loro proposta si fece ancora più accessibile tanto da arrivare al grande pubblico sbancando pure classifiche e facendo incetta di riconoscimenti. Troppo indie per il mainstream, troppo mainstream per l'indie e questo grazie al successo planetario di 'Beds Are Burning' qui contenuta (e coverizzata da tanti in seguito). Tre cose mi sono sempre sembrate inattaccabili: la evocativa copertina di DIESEL And DUST che mi ha sempre affascinato rispecchiando bene la loro proposta (la fattoria The Burra Homestead fotografata da Ken Duncan), lo spiccato carisma del cantante Peter Garrett, uno che si candidò pure in politica e che girava rasato senza problemi in quegli anni e mica per moda (lo mettevo subito dopo Yul Brinner, Telly Savalas e Ed Cassidy dei Spirit), infine ma forse più importante, la caparbietà e l'ostinazione con le quali hanno continuato a portare in giro i loro messaggi politici. Arrivare al grande pubblico con canzoni che si schieravano contro il nucleare, a favore della classe operaia, prendendo forti posizioni ecologiste e a tutela delle minoranze etniche (aborigeni) della loro Australia come le popolazioni Warakurna che daranno il titolo a una canzone che nel testo ha pure il titolo dell'album ("diesel e polvere sono ciò che respiriamo, questa terra non cambia e non ce ne andiamo") non era cosa scontata e da tutti. A differenza di tanti altri gruppi più blasonati che una volta ottenuto il successo hanno stemperato il loro impegno, i Midnight Oil continuano ancora oggi le loro battaglie (in Australia sono un'istituzione), quest'anno è uscito il nuovo disco dal titolo Resist (guarda un po'), solo per questo meriterebbero rispetto. #midnightoil @midnightoilband #midnightoildieselanddust #dieselanddust #australian #australianrock #vinylcollection #vinyl #records #rock

Sometimes, I wonder if I would be a happier person today if not for the 1987 Midnight Oil album, Diesel and Dust. Early on during my teenage years, I plowed through life under the assumption that I would probably end up as an everyday successful businessman with a big house, a beautiful wife, a fast sports car, 2.5 kids, and a white picket fence. I bought a cassette tape of Diesel and Dust in 1988 on the afternoon of the last day of school of my 10th grade year. I spent that summer immersed in this forceful and hard-edged, yet tuneful, music that dwelled in subject matter pertaining to the struggles of the voiceless downtrodden who raged against corporate corruption, ecological devastation, and injustice. Frontman Peter Garrett’s vocals planted a seed in my head, informing me that the Earth’s resources were finite, that the “dreamworld” could come to an end, and that my potential could be directed towards having the will to be different and having the desire to stand up for the greater good. Now, decades later, I have spent the past 25 years as a civil servant employed in environmental protection, and I make less money than many first-year schoolteachers.
