Mayor Brandon Johnson is forming an advisory group to advise him on relaunching the city’s guaranteed income program, which will provide Chicagoans in need with a $500 monthly stipend for a year. The city’s first basic income pilot plan was launched in 2022 under Mayor Lori Lightfoot. More than 170,000 people applied for the program and the city selected 5,000 people to receive the monthly payment. “When I said I would ensure the city uses these federal recovery dollars to invest in people, this guaranteed income program is exactly what I meant,” Johnson said in a written statement. “This program delivers dollars directly into the hands of Chicagoans who need it the most and will provide much-needed relief to help families and communities meet financial obligations and responsibilities.”

Nearly one year ago, Chicagoans cheered Mayor Lori Lightfoot’s removal from office. Gone was her toxic attitude. Her flippant dismissal of the city’s many crises. Her abrasive politics. In her place was Brandon Johnson, who promised a more inclusive approach to building a “better, stronger, safer Chicago.” It hasn’t turned out that way. Today, there’s little disagreement that Mayor Johnson has disappointed on most key issues. On crime. On policing. On migrants. On education. On governance. Even on foreign affairs. Two recent polls show Chicagoans have a low opinion of Johnson and his performance so far. A January poll by Tulchin Research found just 21% of registered Chicago voters approved of Johnson. Mayor Brandon Johnson’s administration will be re-launching a popular guaranteed income pilot that provides $500 monthly payments to low-income residents as it works to spend federal COVID-19 relief funding to avoid having to return it to the feds. The relaunch was announced as part of the Johnson Administration’s plan to dedicate and spend more than $374 million in federal funds earmarked for community projects. The city — which has been slow to spend the money it received in 2021 — has to allocate all funds by the end of this year, and spend them by 2026, or lose the money. City officials hope to have the funds allocated by November ahead of the end-of-year deadline. Officials say they are doubling down on funding successful programs launched by the prior administration while pulling back on programs that have been difficult to implement, and therefore spend money on. “The bulk of the dollars on the community initiative side will go out, and have gone out, under this mayor. And so it is really critically important to him that we get this done correctly, and that we return $0 to the Treasury and so that’s what our focus is,” Johnson’s Budget Director Annette Guzman told reporters at a briefing Monday. Today at a press conference with Mayor Brandon Johnson, we announced plans to create a full nursing pathway at Kennedy-King College. The pathway will include associate degree in nursing and licensed practical nursing (LPN) programs operated by Malcolm X College at KKC, as well as a basic nursing assistant (BNA) program and general education courses operated by KKC. The BNA program will launch first, with students expected to begin coursework this fall. Additionally, an expanded partnership between City Colleges, the University of Chicago, and UChicago Medicine will lead to the construction of two new facilities in Washington Park: the UChicago Medicine Clinical Labs and the Malcolm X College Learning Center. 39 of the remaining Chicago public high schools that still had school resource officers (SROs) will officially have them removed by the start of next school year, the Chicago Board of Education decided in a vote Thursday. Additionally, in a separate vote, it was decided to drop janitorial giant Aramark as the district’s cleaning provider. "To truly achieve our goal of whole school safety, we must look beyond a narrow set of physical safety protocols and include emotional support for all children and trusting relationships between CPS students and adults," the board said in a letter to the CPS community. The decision comes after the school board published a resolution Tuesday (Feb. 21), which was put in motion after @chicagosmayor's approval to end the school district’s $10.3 million contract with the @chicagopolicedepartment last month. The funding for the SRO program will be reallocated for "alternative safety positions, resources, and interventions," according to the board. This is a major win for the students, who have protested for years against the police presence in schools due to the disproportionate policing of Black children. Everywhere I go, I find my people 🤣 This morning, I had the pleasure of attending a Youth Workforce Development and employment event hosted by #WorldBusinessChicago and The Office of #MayorBrandonJohnson. Most people don’t know that I come from humble beginnings, or that I’m an #outsider, #underdog who beat the odds; which were highly stacked against me, and that I shouldn’t be who or where I am today. I started working my first (summer) job at 13, as a secretary at the Department of Defense Agency (DFAS) in Columbus, Ohio. I landed this #opportunity through a Workforce Development Program. I made $5/hr and I was proud and grateful for it, I learned job and social skills and responsibility. I always wanted and needed my own money growing up, so, I always worked, from that moment on. During my Junior year of high school, I joined career center, (@tasha112126 😂🙌🏾) studied insurance and accounting and interned at The Nationwide Headquarters my last year of high school (Surprise another workforce development program). Yes!!! I graduated high school and career center and earned insurance and accounting credentials, well before college. The point is this; the conversation today was about creating opportunities for young people to gain career and life skills and equipping them with the tools and knowledge needed to be successful, productive members of society. Not only that, but taking initiative and responsibility by investing in young people because they are the leaders of tomorrow. This event resonated with me on a personal level. It reminded me of the programs I participated in growing up for underprivileged students, that gave me the idea that I could do something outside of my circumstances and become someone and create the life I wanted instead of what was handed to me. And here I am, #grateful and ready to do my part to help the next generation of “me’s”. 🩵 This is right up my alley. ✨ I feel at home in rooms like this where people gather and collaborate for the purpose of moving others #forward. #Chicago #youthemployment #empowerment

Chicago's Board of Education will order Chicago Public Schools officials to remove police officers from dozens of high schools by the start of next school year, a school board resolution published Tuesday reports. The decision comes after @chicagosmayor's approval to end the school district’s $10.3 million contract with the @chicagopolicedepartment last month. The move was highly anticipated and seen as a major victory for student and activist who have been protesting against the presence of police in schools due to the disproportionate policing of Black children. The resolution will come to a vote Thursday, which also calls for CPS CEO Pedro Martinez to draft a new policy by June 27 that would introduce a “holistic approach to school safety” at district schools, such as implementing restorative justice practices, which focus on resolving a conflict instead of punishment. If passed, the resolution would directly impact 39 schools – all high schools – that have a total of 57 officers on campus, according to the resolution and district officials. Annual Count Aims To Boost Services City staffers and volunteers connected with hundreds of unhoused Chicagoans during the annual point-in-time count Thursday night. Meanwhile, thousands of migrants face homelessness as the city’s shelter stay limit approaches. Vincent and Heather were among those counted Thursday night. Their tent sat amid a row of others on the lowest level of East Stetson Avenue as rain poured down columns nearby. “It’s dangerous because we don’t know who walks among us at night. All kinds of people walk through here,” Vincent said. The two hope to “get stabilized again” and find a place to live, Vincent said.
