We’ll, that was a fabulous weekend! 😎. Gave me chance to get out into the garden - I had seeds to sow and veggies to plant out. I found the marker pen and labels fade fairly quickly so permanently engraving them was a good solution! I’ve made some generic ones along with a couple with variety names- I know they’re potatoes but they all look the same before you dig them up 😂. I keep a record of which variety I grow each year so I know which ones we like. Laying down threads and beads on the fabric and moving them around to get the best flow lines in the design before stitching. I like this method of working as there is maximum freedom to make changes as I go along. Free flowing lines are a feature of my work to lead the eye around the design. It is important not to close off sections completely with threads leading to sectional disruption of the ability of the eye to move around the work, therefore I will move the top right thread down into a gentle curve instead. Continuing our heritage rail theme with something a little newer Last year I had the joy of recommissioning a rail vehicle known as NATS 3 (an old air traffic control tram used on the Snaefell Mountain Railway) Some of the tricky aspects of this work was not just the sourcing of new components (for a 50 year old vehicle) but also upgrading it to current safety standards for when it rejoined the engineering fleet. I have just finished this new piece that I have called summer pink. It is now available in my shop, link in bio. It is a patchwork wall hanging using procion dyed fabrics. I have hand embroidered it using purchased hand dyed Norwegian wool from Villsau sheep that I bought from Karin Svarstad. Details were produced using embroidery threads. It is embellished with beads. I had the honour today to be invited to have a cup of tea and a tour of Douglas City hall with the Mayor of Douglas Cllr. Natalie Byron-Teare. I have nearly finished this piece. Needs pressing, the back put on and a hanging attached. I am pleased with how it turned out. I read a quote in an old embroidery magazine from Cas Holmes, a wonderful embroiderer whose books I have and who has been a great inspiration to me. It says " I couldn't tell you how I want to define a line until I am working with it. The biggest lesson I've learned is to lose the perfection". This is the way that I have always worked. In the making of this wall hanging as in other work I start with the first shapes and after that I sit thread on top of the material and move it around until I get the flow of lines that I want, only then do I stitch it down. As a result the design develops organically in unexpected ways. #marchmeetthemaker2024 Day 22. Positive. The most important development in my ongoing journey as an artist follows on from my taking the Helen Hallows online gardening sketchbook course. Previous to this most of my work developed intuitively and from images that I created in my head. I now have great confidence in drawing from nature and have several sketchbooks on the go with drawings, paintings etc. I have already created 5 new pieces of work in the last few weeks based on the sketchbook images and I have loads of other ones I want to start on. #marchmeetthemaker2024 Day 21 Detail. Most of my work has a tremendous amount of detail especially as I love hand stitching. This is part of a robin embroidery that I completed last year. I used single strands of embroidery thread in many layers to depict the varied shades of the feathers. One of the most important details is where to put the white spot in the eye as this is key to showing the bird's character. #marchmeetthemaker2024 Day 19 Gifting ideas. Many of my products are suitable for people to give as gifts especially to friends or family living abroad. The first image shows one of my wall hangings. As they are very light and easy to post, my smaller wall hangings make an ideal gift. The most popular gifts are my coasters. I wrap each one up in tissue paper and tie it with thread as in the second photo. No matter how many are bought they are always wrapped up individually in this way so they are immediately ready to give as a gift or to keep for one's self. I have a very large range of hand stitched cards and these are bought often to give as presents as they are left blank for every occasion. The recipients often frame them as they are so pretty. #marchmeetthemaker2024 Day 18. Process. This is a piece that I did for a competition and is one of my favourites. The title is " Look at the birds of the air. Matthew 6:26" There are several steps in the process of making a large piece like this. Unusually this one uses purchased, coloured merino felting wool. I laid the wool slivers down in 3 layers and graded the colours as I went along. I then wet felted the whole piece. When it was dry I tacked it onto a soft bamboo fabric backing which was lovely to stitch into. Then I began the long but delightful process of hand stitching the birds of paradise and other tropical birds.
