1st day of the year, 2024 I am not a superstitious person except for the first hours of the year. They say how you spend the NYE determines the rest of the year. How silly. In practical terms, I hate spending it at home alone so this year I went to East, instead of the West. I spent glorious days with friends around Boston area whom I have not seen in years while visiting a good friend who is also an artist. Last year I found a picture of me graduating from college and took a photo of that photo on January 1st without realizing what was to come. Interestingly enough the rest of the year was full of delightful people and places from the past. Here I am, on the 1st day of this year in a gloriously sunny albeit cold day at #boston #longwharf #longwharfboston, I am looking towards the East, realizing that the #loganairport airport is also to the east. There are #planes coming and going, there are beautiful #boats on the water. Hence I captured the last picture of the #transportation series which I posted a couple of days ago. That is one of the first images of the year. Does that mean I will be spending a lot of time on the planes and boats this year? Will I be more on the east coast or will I be visiting home often? As long as one is healthy or you are not rushing from one crisis to the other, I suppose anything is possible in a positive way 🙏 As they say, life is what happens when you are making other plans. Let’s hope for a good year which allows me to see the people I miss just like the last one. Long Wharf The Long Wharf is the center of Boston's maritime history. Built in 1710, the wharf extended half a mile into the Boston Harbor, allowing deep-hulled ships to unload goods directly onto the wharf instead of having to use smaller boats to get goods to shore in the shallow port waters. Early maps show that it was by far the most ambitious undertaking on Boston's waterfront. An immediate success, Long Wharf's site at the base of King Street allowed direct access to the heart of the town—the intersection of King and Cornhill Streets (now State and Washington Streets). Its extreme length of 1,586 feet allowed up to 50 vessels to dock. Boston, and Long Wharf in particular, became immersed in the Mid-Atlantic slave trade and what is known as the Middle Passage. The arrival of British troops via Long Wharf just over a decade later received a different response, as they came to enforce the King's rights in 1770 (ultimately ending in the Boston Massacre). As part of the Intolerable Acts, British Parliament shut down the port of Boston in 1774, therefore closing Long Wharf stores and docks. The city of Boston achieved its acme of commercial prosperity in the 1840s. While trade with Europe continued throughout this period, Boston merchant houses thrived on the China and East Indies trade—silks, madras, and cashmere were transported to Long Wharf warehouses. Today, the center of Boston's maritime trade has moved to the Conley Container Terminal located in South Boston. The Long Wharf retains its central place in Boston's maritime activities by becoming the main port for ferries and harbor cruises departing from Boston. Visit the Long Wharf today to tour the breath-taking New England Aquarium or catching a show at the IMAX! The Chart House is located in the four-story Gardiner Building. The Gardiner building was built around 1763 and was used as an office for Thomas Hancock. This same office was later used by John Hancock, who was his nephew. This is the oldest building on Long Wharf, and is known as “Hancock’s Counting House”. John Hancock’s original safe is also located in the wall of this building. The Boston Chart House was opened in July of 1973, and now serves as a look into history. There are many authentic fixtures still adorning the building today.
