Sharing one from the depths of my archive, partly because I’ve been thinking about landscape and diaspora a lot recently. The painting was a commission for the exhibition Labour Intensive at the City Gallery Leicester, which sadly no longer exists today. The painting is based on the garment industry in Leicester, spaces on factory floors where workers escape the monotony and dream of being somewhere different. I wanted to juxtapose the landscape of Gujarat and merge with the landscape of a factory interior. I remember photographing the metal shelving, using the cut out holes for brackets and make them appear floral, like a border of an Indian miniature. The floor was inspired by the lino of our old toilet in Kensal Rise, which is not very exotic at all. I was paid £300 by the gallery to make this painting, I still have it, and it hasn’t been shown since as my work moved on, but I’m considering taking it out again to exhibit. It’s known for its moisturising and nourishing properties, making it popular in skincare and haircare products. The argan tree is primarily grown in the southwestern region of Morocco, particularly in the Sous Valley. The Argan tree (Argania spinosa) is considered a rare and endangered species, primarily due to habitat loss, overgrazing by livestock, and the expansion of agricultural land. Well those bags look a bit suss! 😳🤔 But I can guarantee it’s just paper pulp. ♻️☺️ Recycling and prep work is a labour intensive part of what I do. No going to a supplier for ready made materials. It’s all done here at Wild Cottage using post consumer waste paper and packaging and it all takes time. 3 bags of dried pulp from start to finish takes 2 -3 days if the weather is nice and warm, much longer in winter. So while you don’t see any creative pieces being posted here, I am creating loads of prepped materials ready for some major works.
Cushions of the day... We've sewn up some of our new Block printed scatters, on thick cotton- the first batch. The scatters, 55x55 cms are R500 each, and the fabric is R1500 per metre, to order. In a key development, Solidaridad Regional Expertise Centre (SREC) and the Council For Leather Exports (CLE) which operates under the Ministy of Commerce and Industry, GoI, entered a strategic partnership to strengthen the performance of the Indian #leatherindustry in domestic and international markets. 🤝 An MoU to this effect was signed on 21 December 2023 for a five-year period, from 1 January 2024 to 31 December 2028. Now understand why beautiful marinated artichoke hearts are so expensive - it’s because they are LABOUR intensive. Here is our small crop left over this 23 October. We let the bigger ones go to seed to collect for next year - otherwise too hard to source good organic artichoke seed - thanks to our lovely former cheesemaker Emma who showed us how. Then we steamed the small artichokes as recommended by several chefs. Defoliating was next - you can really see that these artichokes are actually flowers waiting to open their buds. Then cutting out the choke in the ones big enough to have a choke - otherwise discovered the smaller ones just include the petals as they are delicate and sweet, with no choke beneath. Dressed with lemon, olive oil from dear friend @rosiesnapping in New Zealand, salt, pepper chilli flakes and a bay leaf. This crop was too small to jar up- we will finish this tonight for supper. Tell me if you have any different recipes. Contrary to our friend Paolo’s advice, we did not find the inner stem to be as sweet as the heart - perhaps to small? New, small batch, handmade, artisan Damson Jam. This is a real treat and I only make it once a year. Reasons being that they are hard to get your hands on, the season is very short and it's also seriously labour intensive! Cooked slowly with the stones in as it improves the flavour, but that also means you have to pick them out at the end! The damsons turn a delicious rich black colour as they cook and it produces a stunning and unique flavour. Delicious on toast, scones, swirled through yoghurt, top onto granola or rice pudding. Also good with cheese. Hawthorn berries & rose hips spicy ketchup: Very labour intensive. I’ve tried a ketchup recipe. It suggests to add other fruits to hawthorn berries. Having remembered a bag of rose hips from last year in the freezer, I added to the hawthorn paste. Remove stalks (hawthorn), deseed (rose hips) & sieve (both) were hard work 😩 It turned out spicy (because I put quite much cinnamon and ginger) but less sweet ketchup although the colour is much like tomato ketchup.
