677. Johnny & Jackey - "Baby Don'tcha Worry"/"Stop What You're Saying" 45, 1963. Johnny Bristol & Jackey Beavers first met at Fort Custer while serving in the air force & then gained notice in Detroit as the singing duo Johnny & Jackey. None of the singles that they released were successful outside of the Midwest, but one of them was the original version of "Someday We'll Be Together" that later became a massive hit for Diana Ross. Their Motown connection began with said singles, all of which were released by Anna Records & the Tri-Phi label that were owned by Berry Gordy's sister Gwen. I think this might have been Johnny & Jackey's final 45 on Tri-Phi before going their separate ways. "Baby Don'tcha Worry" is another Johnny & Jackey song that later resurfaced as a Motown single, but it sounds considerably different here from Tammi Terrell's version. Johnny & Jackey's original is a nice slow strut of reassurance that everything is all fine & good because he's coming home to you & all that sweet stuff. Not a bad song at all, but I can't shake this weird feeling that Johnny & Jackey's "Baby Don'tcha Worry" is the line of total bullshit to Tammi Terrell's sincerity. "Stop What You're Saying" brings the harmonies that sound good in that early Sixties sort of way. Cheesy songs of love & heartbreak are great in this era, but would've sounded godawful had they come out a decade later when soul music had changed considerably & became much more groove-oriented than this. Not a great 45, but decent enough for the moment. Johnny Bristol became a noted producer & songwriter for Motown & CBS, resuming his recording career in the '70s & was married to Iris Gordy when he passed away in 2004. Jacky Beavers became a producer too for Nashville's Sound Stage 7 label in the '70s & was then ordained as a minister. He also worked for Georgia governor Joe Frank Harris & was a church activist in prison reform. Jacky died in 2008, although quite a few people at the time would've had you believe that he'd passed 20 years earlier for some reason. Diana Ross & the Supremes- Someday We’ll Be Together The swan song for Motown’s most commercially successful act with 12 number-one singles on the Billboard Hot 100, did a four week stay at number one on Billboard’s R&B chart. Produced by Motown alum, the late Johnny Bristol, who also co-wrote with songwriter Jackey Beavers and Motown alum Harvey Fuqua, the song featured lead singer Diana Ross with background accompanied by the Waters sisters and Bristol was released in the fall of 1969, and three weeks later, Motown announced that Diana would be leaving the Supremes for a solo career. The lone original member, the late Mary Wilson, soldiered on with two new members, Jean Terrell, who replaced Diana Ross and Cindy Birdsong. This might be a story. Yesterday as I was moving vinyl records from one section to another at the store. A bundle of albums tumbled forward and laid down face up. I looked down and kinda gasped. There staring back up at me was a Johnny Bristol 12 remix from the early 80s. I was unaware that we even had this in our inventory. Of course, I bought it. But took this as a " Hey, I see you" from him. Those who know me can either share in the story or know of it. When I managed and owned a video store in Ypsilanti Michigan I got to know Johnny . At that time he was living in an apartment over near EMU. He came in one night we got to talking about music and he shared with me who he was. He told me he was one of the writers of Someday We Will Be Together by Diana Ross & The Supremes. I chimed in that he also wrote Love Me For A Reason for the Osmonds ( it helps to read liner notes!) He was surprised that I knew it. He was a humble man . But proud that his music was finally getting the credit it deserved. He pulled up one day to the store & got out of his new black Jaguar and said to me " See that car, Janet ( Jackson ) paid for that car." ( Songwriting credit - IF ) it was a beautiful car. He deserved it. During that same time I was really big into the UK Pop music which never made the airwaves in the USA. I was able to get him CDs of the acts ( Boyzone, Gary Barlow, Rosie Gaines, Jimmy Somerville) that were recording his music for his collection. A friend of his at the time, Connie told me once that Johnny would get royalty checks. But wouldn't have a clue to what they were for. Well, it seems that It helped him. He eventually was able to move from Ypsilanti to a nice home up in the Brighton/Pinckney area with a recording studio. I always enjoyed our conversations and his Motown stories when he would stop by to see us. He was a kind man and always made sure he remembered us at Christmas. He even gave one of my employees some money to buy a nice bottle of wine to share with his mother when he graduated EMU. He was like that. When I heard he had passed away years later. It saddened me to not only lose a great songwriter/ musician but a kind human.

He passed away just outside of Detroit, Michigan on 3/21/2004 in his home from a heart attack. Completely a surprise. He was recording his first gospel album!
