Everyone in the reggae community in Jamaica had a great love for Gregory and at various times tried to help him. In particular I remember a discussion in the mid 80's between reggae greats Big Youth and Leroy Sibbles at the Sandhurst Hotel in Kingston. They were going together to reason with Gregory. On our route through Kingston we often saw him near his home in Barbican people always reached out with support for him. On this day in the late 80's we had been sorting through records -back stock in upstairs Randy's when Jah Lloyd hailed us and asked us to come down to the court in Kingston as Gregory had been arrested. There was not much we could do but visit him in a holding cell and keep him company before he was marched into the court room. The police were very unhappy that we took this photo and asked who we were? 'Foreign Press' we answered then we were asked to leave a few minutes after we went into the court room where two murderers were being sentenced. People gathered outside the court house to take a stand for Gregory that day. Jah Lloyd (Patrick Lloyd Francis) aka Jah Lion aka Jah Ali sitting in Carl's Records in Kingston. Known as a DJ and producer was the founder of the Teem label. Besides being a top DJ himself he worked along side of many of reggae greats such as Lee Perry, Mike Brooks, Max Romeo, Winston Jarrett and Mighty Diamonds. He often recorded at the famous Studio 17. We were lucky to spend time with him. He often checked for us as we walked over to Prince Busters or Augustus Pablo's Rockers shop on Orange Street. One day he came and told us that Gregory Isaacs had been arrested and asked us to come down to the court house. There was not much we could do but did visit with Gregory in the holding cell. I took a picture of Gregory being marched into the court room his hands cuffed behind his back and we were asked to leave by the constable. Not long after Jah Lloyd was killed in the streets of Kingston some say by gunshots. In the early 60's he was in a group called the Mediators along with one of the Mighty Diamonds -Fitzroy 'Bunny' Simpson. Jah Lloyd, aka #Jahlion, The Black Lion of Judah, and #JahAli. Born Patrick Lloyd Francis, 29 August 1947, Francis was born in Point Hill, Saint Catherine Parish in 1947. His mother died when he was eight, and he lived with his father, a farmer. After leaving school at the age of twelve he moved to Kingston and settled in Trench Town. Francis began his career in the mid 1960s as a singer in The Mediators along with Fitzroy "Bunny" Simpson, and worked as a solo singer with tracks such as "Soldier Round the Corner" and "Know Yourself Blackman" recorded for producer Rupie Edwards. In the early 1970s, he worked as a record salesman before turning to production, recording the early efforts by Simpson's new group The Diamonds, later to be renamed The Mighty Diamonds. He also produced Mike Brooks' 1976 album What a Gathering, and The Revolutionaries 1979 album Goldmine Dub. Recording as Jah Lloyd, he turned his hand to deejaying, enjoying hits in Jamaica with "Black Snowfall", "World Class", and "Beware of the Flour". He then recorded with Lee "Scratch" Perry, who decided to rename the deejay Jah Lion, the fruits of their association released on the Colombia Colly album in 1976 on Island Records. "Wisdom" from the album was featured in the soundtrack to the film Countryman, and "Soldier and Police War" a deejay version of Junior Murvin's "Police & Thieves" topped the reggae chart. Reverting to Jah Lloyd, he secured a two album deal Virgin Records' Frontline label, resulting in The Humble One and Black Moses. Although he continued to record occasionally, he concentrated on production, working with artists such as Julie Charles. He had started his own Teem label in the mid-1970s, along with his younger brother Vincent, the label continuing on since, notably with recent CD reissues.
