Some may have noticed I haven’t been posting my art for a while. I pretty much gave painting a break for much of this year after completing a large commission. Over the last couple of years I’d gradually shifted to attempting to paint how others I admired did and how I thought the market would respond but the results were not pleasing, reflected in stagnant inquiries and sales. I’ve hit the point in my medical insurance year when they stop fighting me and just let the orders go through. Opening a box of #insulinpump supplies shouldn’t make me feel so indebted, it’s not like I chose this insanely expensive disease, but I am so grateful to still be earning enough money to pay $1300/month for medical insurance. And then grateful that they let the order go through. Why my insurance costs so much and will go up again in January, if they even decide to continue to cover me, is inexplicable. Grateful though I am, I still consider the #medicalindustrialcomplex evil. All this I’ll consider part of my #50yearswitht1d celebration. Still no complications. Spent a beautiful day walking a new-to-me beach path and painting with dear friends, ending with some quaran-tanning with @leslie.kaminoff who, after eight weeks in quarantine preceded by four weeks on the road in Australia, I still like. Today in #diabetes history: just after Thanksgiving day in 1970 I was diagnosed with #t1d. Due to my mum’s cleverness she recognized my symptoms in under a week so I escaped hospital, ketoacidosis as well as other ills that make most newly diagnosed people suffer. Within months she and a couple of other parents of kids with what was then called juvenile diabetes started forming the NY chapter of @jdrfhq, founded just months before by Lee Ducat in Philadelphia. Today I travel professionally much of the year, healthfully, with all my medical technology in tow. #imaluckysoandso
