Busted finally got around to pressing their first two albums on vinyl - Their 2002 self-titled album and 2003’s “A Present For Everybody.” It’s nice to finally have all of the studio albums on vinyl now. Hopefully, they’ll do the first live album at some point but it’s not essential. It’s crazy to think that these songs are 20+ years old. Some of them are pretty cringey now (“Britney,” “Dawson’s Geek,” “She Wants To Be Me,” “Nerdy,” etc) but you kind of have to forgive them because they were like 17 and 19 year old kids when they wrote them. Still though... Rose was formed by Randy Rose after his other band Mad At The World transitioned into a hard rock band in 1990. After his first solo effort ‘Sacrificium’ was released in 1991 a full band was formed and this sophomore release ‘Healing’ was released in 1993. I played this CD over and over again back then and this year it was finally reissued on red-rose swirl vinyl by Retroactive Records. Limited to 200 copies.

Listening to 𝑱𝒐𝒉𝒏 𝑪𝒐𝒍𝒕𝒓𝒂𝒏𝒆 - 𝑶𝒍é 𝑪𝒐𝒍𝒕𝒓𝒂𝒏𝒆 (1961) Inspired by the work his former employer Miles Davis was doing with Gil Evans, especially their album Sketches of Spain, Coltrane was at another crossroads with his sound. He was exploring different worlds of music, he was still using the “sheets of sound” you hear on Giant Steps, he was also obsessed with the “free jazz” he was hearing from Ornette Coleman. You hear all of it on “Olé”! It’s his old, more accessible sound with strong hints of his wild and free sound that would dominate his later years of life. It’s him finding his musical partners McCoy Tyner and Elvin Jones but adding the eccentric Eric Dolphy to the mix. The McCoy Tyner written song “Aisha”, named after his wife, has maybe some the most beautiful notes Coltrane has put together, which is saying a lot. If you haven’t made yourself comfortable with this classic record I highly suggest you do! Silverstein - When Broke Is Easily Fixed Victory records, original US pressing, blue vinyl LP - 2003 Cocteau Twins - Heaven Or Las Vegas 4AD records, UK pressing LP- 1990 Steely Dan - Aja ABC records, original Canadian pressing LP - 1977 The term “wearing your influences” is one I think most of us have heard. When I was in a band with @formerhuman he was the KING of wearing shirts of his influences that often didn’t necessarily run hand in hand with the style of music we were playing. But!! Very much influenced him. I had the privilege of seeing @silverstein play on one of their two SOLD OUT home coming shows last weekend. And both @billverstein and @xpaulkoehlerx continued the tradition by wearing a Steely Dan “Aja” tour shirt and a Cocteau Twins “Heaven Or Las Vegas” shirt respectively. Two bands I’m sure most folks wouldn’t immediately associate with Silverstein’s music. Playing to a predominantly young audience… I hope a couple of those kids took note and look up one or both of those classic records. It’s the best when your favorite band are music fans!

This was sitting at the front of a pile and out of nowhere my son asked if I would play it for him…of course mate. ‘Kind of relaxing’ was his verdict on the opening solo sax meditation, and then a little bit less so after that when Klemmer starts wailing. He didn’t have the attention span to make it through the whole of side 1 but fair play to him even showing the slightest interest. It’s an absolute banger by the way: prime early 70s echoplexing, aggressive tenor; a fat slice of Rhodes and Mouzon and McBee making up the baddest rhythm team you could wish for. Perhaps the most surprising thing about this album is that John’s specs seem to have come right back into vogue in recent years.
