In Tibet and Nepal, images of freightening faces of 'Angry Deities' can be found everywhere. In tantric Buddhism, they can be either the images of the fierce, wrathful aspects or forms of buddha's, bodhisattva's, deva's and deities (beings that have thus both a peaceful, friendly appearance and a forceful, horrifying form) or the images of dharmapala's; spirits and gods originating in the Tibetan pre-buddhist indigenous Bon-tradition, that are said to be 'tamed' by Padmasambhava in the 8th century CE and then sworn an oath to protect the buddhist dharma ever since. They are portrait as terrifying, demonic-looking beings, often further adorned with gruesome ritual attributes and symbolic decorations such as (human) bones and skulls and other items associated with the charnel grounds. But as terrifying as they might appear, they actually are often driven by compassion. They are very strong and powerful protectors and guides for those on the path to enlightenment, embodying the power and force needed to go forward and overcome and transform all obstacles on the way. They fight against all kinds of demons and evil and in Tibetan Buddhism especially against the enemies of Buddhism. Masks such as this very nice example can be found all over Tibet and Nepal at the entrances of temples and homes. They are the houses for these wrathful deities and thus help to guard off all kinds of evil. Being spirit houses, masks such as these are obviously not seen as mere decorational pieces on the wall. They are regularly fed with offerings from ghee, wodka or incense smoke. Images from wrathful deities have also found their way into some classical shamanic lineages, such as the lineage of Spirit of Wolf. Here they are also associated with Erlik Han, Lord of the Underworld, and as such mostly worked with by black shamans. This mask was purchased in Kathmandu in the 1970's. It is approximately 35 centimeters high and 22 centimeters wide. Due to its age and previous usage, of course it might have some damages and imperfections, but overall this mak is in very good condition.

Barker House was established in 1990. It was named after the second Bishop of Sydney. Barker was originally black but changed to orange in 2006. Some of their mascots include a panther and fire ants. The first Barker Housemaster was Shane Rolls and the Captain was Rodney Douglas. In 2007, the final Barker Housemaster was Jaime Lawrence and Captains were Lachlan Stevens and Keyla Serinsu. Broughton House was established in 1990. It was named after the first Bishop of Australia. Broughton was light blue in colour. One of their mascots was a bear. The first Broughton Housemaster was Georges Deans and the Captain was Kara Dixon. House colors were proudly worn by staff and students alike, with our year 12 students participating in a fun dress-up competition. There were some incredible performances in both track and field events, with several records being set. The LEAD and SLC students ran a BBQ and drinks stand, with all proceeds being donated to The Hudson Institute of Medical Research (https://www.hudson.org.au/), who are searching for a cure for Ewing Sarcoma. Students ran this fundraiser in memory of past FHS student, Cade Watts, who passed away in 2023 at the young age of 15 from this rare and terrible form of cancer. A highlight of the day was the year 12 students participating in “12 at 12” by taking over the middle of the track with fun games and activities. Antique Nepalese mushroom mask Masks such as this beautiful example are typical for animist tribes such as the Rai, Tharu and Terai people in the east of Nepal. They are made from a single large funghi, from Ganoderma or Fomes species, by minimal adjustments; only eyes and mouth and sometimes nose are carved out (or, as is the case here, a nose is made from a different piece of mushroom and attached to the mask). Masks like this are used for protection; they are hung in houses near doors or windows to protect the house and family against malevolent spirits and diseases. They are the houses of benevolent spirits such as the family's ancestors and are regularly fed with offerings of ghee or wodka and the smoke of incense. Sometimes they are worn by village shamans during ritual or healing ceremonies. This item is a particularly beautiful specimen of such a mask. It is, especially considering its age and of course fragile nature, in excellent condition. It has a beautiful, balanced shape in which the natural structure of the funghi can still be very well recognised. This mask is approximately 31 centimeters wide and 26 centimeters high. The exact age of this mask is hard to say, but it can roughly be determined somewhere around the middle of the 20th century, or maybe even a little bit earlier. Unique item, only one available

Vintage wooden Mahakala mask Mahakala is a deity known in Hinduism and Buddhism. He is often depicted as a fierce, terrifying creature, embodying the wrathful dynamics of deities such as Shiva. Also Mahakala can be seen as a manifestation of Avalokiteshvara, a boddhisattva representing the embodiment of universal compassion, who realized his peaceful methods were too mild to subdue the degenerate beings and thus manifested in a wrathful form to accomplish his compassionate intentions. Symbolism that can often be found in depictions of Mahakala is for example; a third eye, representing clear, true vision and insights, not clouded by the distractions and illusions of the human mind and ego. And a crown with five skulls, representing the five 'poisonous delusions': anger, desire, ignorance, jealousy, and pride. And Mahakala is often depicted in black; the total absence of color, in which all colors just disappear, symbolizing the ultimate, absolute truth. This wooden Mahakala mask comes from Tibet. In Tibetan buddhism Mahakala is seen as a powerful protector of the dharma, which is one of the reasons why masks like this often can be found at the entrance of temples and monasteries. Also in traditional shamanism, such as the lineage of Spirit of Wolf, depictions of Mahakala (and other wrathful deities) can be found. Here they are also connected with Erlik Han, lord of the Underworld, and as such used in black shamanic work. Sizes from this wooden mask are approximately; 17 centimeters high and 14 centimeters wide. It is painted in bright colors, which is still in very good condition, considering its age (approximately 1970's) and usage. On the inside of the mask, the remnants of an export seal from the Nepalese Bureau of Cultural Relics can be seen, indicating the authenticity and heritage of this item. Only one available.
