Towards the end of Term 1, our Year 11 Legal Studies class had the opportunity to visit the Queensland Supreme and District Court Complex situated in George Street, Brisbane City. 🏛️ The students were given a comprehensive tour of the complex, during which they were led into a courtroom. Here, Angie Williams, an Educational Officer at the Queensland Supreme Court Library, provided insightful commentary on the functioning of the criminal and civil justice systems in Queensland. Last weekend, over 100 Craigslea Volleyball Academy (CVA) athletes 🏐 participated in the Annual Queensland Beach Volleyball Schools Cup at Coolangatta Beach. 🌟 Yesterday, our Year 12 Modern History class embarked on an unforgettable journey to the newly opened Brisbane Holocaust Museum on Charlotte Street. As part of their studies this semester, students are examining the effects of propaganda in Nazi Germany and so this excursion was a golden opportunity for our students to broaden their perspectives and deepen their understanding. The museum experience left an indelible mark, shedding light on the profound impacts of the Holocaust and the chilling consequences of prejudice, discrimination and hate. As a poignant highlight, our students had the honour of meeting Holocaust survivor, Mr Peter Baruch, who shared his story, alongside the blanket his mother wrapped him in during their escape from Poland. The second part of the excursion took students to the State Library in Southbank, where they were able to immerse themselves in an engaging lesson on effective research techniques. 📚 Encouraged to apply for a State Library card, students now have access to a wealth of resources, from databases to book reservations, empowering them for upcoming assessments. Five intrepid Rocket League players 🚀🎮 put their hands up to represent Craigslea SHS in a knockout competition between 24 Queensland high schools. These rounds unfolded over the course of two exciting weeks in June and the triumphant teams earned the chance to compete live at the Ekka e-sports arena during the thrilling weekend of August 12 and 13. Our team was lucky enough to make the first division Sunday playoffs and a valiant battle ensued as our Craigslea Conquerors faced off against Ormiston College Red. The Craigslea Conquerors played well in the first game, giving it their all. However, it all boiled down to a sudden death shootout, but alas, Ormiston emerged victorious. Grace Lutheran were no match for the Conquerors, but sadly, the die was cast, and Ormiston took the day. Our team was rewarded with MSI loot bags, and judging by the smiles on their faces, a great day was had by all. On Tuesday 29 August, we had a fantastic visit from Josh representing the Queensland Minerals and Energy Academy (QMEA). Our Year 7 Excellence in Science students had a blast during Josh's coding session. 🖥️💡 Students dove into various coding challenges, taking their classroom skills to a whole new level in a hands-on setting. 🚣♂️🛠️ Our Year 12 Design and Engineer students kicked off the week with a splash! 🚤💦 They took on the ultimate boat race challenge – designing and building their very own watercraft using just corflute, duct tape and zip ties. Creativity was in full swing as our talented teams crafted their boats in their own unique styles. From imaginative designs to ingenious construction methods, they pulled out all the stops! 🎨🛠️ And guess what? Even our very own Mr Gow and Mr Dark joined in, trying their hand at boat construction and joining the second race! 🤣👏 In the end, we had some fierce competition, but there could only be one winner in each race.
