La sua origine ha radici profonde nella religione shintoista, dove i nomi dei benefattori venivano spesso appesi nei santuari in segno di rispetto e riconoscimento. John came into the Dojo as a Shotokan Karate Black Belt, from a fight club. There were many stories, with first-names only. He was a retiring Bronx narcotics cop, starting his career patrolling the subways in the 80s. If you were there then you get it. He retired a lieutenant and served the city of New York with more than he’s willing to admit. John was one of many who ran into chaos of 911 and didn’t leave until … well, I’m not sure he’ll ever leave. John rounded 20 years as a student at our Dojo. He has travelled to study in Japan and has kept a very detailed journal Manaka Sensei’s teaching of Bikenjutsu. He is a student through and through, a true warrior and man among men. Last week John announced his sudden move down south, closing this chapter of his life and leaving the Dojo. Of course he will be missed, but the feelings of sadness to see our brother leave are quickly put aside by the honor to have had him as a student, buyu and friend - a colleague of the Jinenkan and member of our Dojo for two decades. His influence on me leaves an appreciation of how far I still have to go; thus I have only sincere gratitude for his leadership and influence on my path. Glasses high ... ⭕ IL MOMENTO DI "CAMBIARE" . Uno dei tratti di stile che distingue la Sekiguchi Ryu Battojutsu – la scuola di scherma che pratico e insegno – è l'uso del Tobichigai (飛違, "saltare e cambiare"). Il suo scopo è evitare che l'avversario ci tagli il piede posto in posizione più avanzata. Ricordo le parole del mio maestro diversi anni fa, quando mi accingevo a praticare per la prima volta un kata della scuola: "È un salto ma non è un salto. È uno scambio dei piedi, ma non è uno scambio dei piedi." Sembrano le classiche parole degne di un koan zen, o tipiche delle caratterizzazioni narrative e cinematografiche. Al contrario esprimono felicemente la filosofia di pratica della Sekiguchi Ryu, incarnata storicamente dallo scritto "Shinen no kurai" ("Il Dominio del Cerchio Perfetto"), dove si decanta la virtù del praticante di armonizzare e far coesistere gli opposti. Quindi come non è solo la mano destra ad estrarre la spada, e non è solo la sinistra a tirare via il fodero, così il Tobichigai non è solo un salto, e non è solo uno scambio di piedi. Vi ho sempre trovato un insegnamento applicabile anche alla vita quotidiana in questo gesto tecnico: ci sono momenti in cui bisogna cambiare passo dopo passo, altri in cui bisogna farlo "di scatto", ma sempre lucidamente. Il kata è una concatenazione di cambiamenti. L'abilità dello spadaccino è quella di capire quando e come farli. Slowing Down “That’s not going to work, you’re trying to do it way too fast,” remarked a training partner recently. In our demanding world, we always seek to accomplish more in less time and too often settle for mediocrity. However, it would be far more beneficial for both ourselves and the planet if we prioritised quality over quantity and mindfulness over thoughtlessness. To achieve this, we must slow down. In horseriding, we frequently employ so called “half-halts.” These are subtle signals to the horse to ease its pace, to concentrate and focus, to center and regain balance. In Aikido, we also practice the art of slowing down. The objective of Aikido is to restore harmony in conflict situations. The attacker’s energy is redirected and utilised to one’s advantage. To do this, you first need to establish a connection with your partner. This requires patience and respect. Speed and haste are counterproductive. Empathy necessitates calmness and controlled movement. To execute Aikido techniques proficiently, it is crucial to locate one’s center of gravity. It is from this foundation that we can harness the power to bring the attacker to the ground. Only by slowing down can we find our center, both physically and emotionally. Aikido teaches us not to resist attacks, but to adapt to circumstances. By consciously relaxing and decelerating, we can discern the subtle nuances of conflicts or challenges and respond more effectively and creatively. Adaptability and prudence enable us to maintain calm in challenging situations and navigate life with more equanimity Let us take the time to pause every now and then. Let’s give our fellow human beings and our tasks the time and attention they deserve. Let us take the time for mindfulness and mutual respect. In doing so, we can bring a little bit more calmness to our world, and ultimately, peace.
