On this day, in 2012, Paul Thomas Anderson's The Master premiered at Venice Film Festival. It won the Silver Lion for Best direction. Coppa Volpi for best acting was shared by both Philip Seymour Hoffman and Joaquin Phoenix. I find the movie very elegant in its visual language. Joaquin Phoenix and PSH play polar opposite characters- one is volatile, erratic, illiterate, and other is controlled, calm and intellectual. Freddie Quell is one of the most bizzare characters- there is no arc to him, he never changes, he concocts drinks out of paint thinners, but he is so hypnotic as there is a genuine sweetness to him. Also there is such ache to him. I love him. The movie is filled with nautical imagery, something I like a lot, i paint sometimes and most of the times I end up painting a boat, lighthouse, the sea and the beach. La relación que Arthur tiene con su madre Penny es una que recuerda bastante a la de Norman Bates con su madre Norma. Otro detalle que contribuyó al éxito de la película es que de una excelente manera logran contar una historia proveniente del mundo de los superhéroes pero alejándose por completo de sus clichés, ya que en ningún momento se nos hace referencia a algún otro personaje del universo de Batman más que los que vemos en pantalla, así como tampoco se hace mención alguna a otro personaje del universo de DC, lo cual contribuye a que lo que estamos viendo se sienta más como una película de suspenso que de superhéroes. Ahora toca hablar de Phoenix, ya les platiqué del cómo pareciera que para construir al personaje de Arthur Fleck, Joaquin Phoenix tomó como base a su personaje de Freddie Quell por el cuál también fue nominado a un premio de la academia. Ambos son dos personas solitarias y sin un aparente propósito, sin embargo la diferencia entre los dos parece ser que radica en que Arthur fue condenado a esta vida, cuando Freddie parece ser que la escogió además de no encontrarse con la misma presión social con la que Arthur si sufre. Considero que de manera indirecta, Phillips tuvo éxito con esta nueva reimaginación del personaje por su comentario social, ya que en la primera mitad de la película el personaje de Thomas Wayne, quien de nuevo contrasta con la versión del personaje que ha predominado a lo largo de los años, condena una serie de asesinatos de tres miembros de su compañía, sin embargo lejos de solo condenar los actos, aprovecha ese tiempo para decir que quién cometió esos actos es un cobarde y que las personas que no tienen un empleo es porque han decidido no hacer nada con su vida desquitándose con quienes sí han querido.
