Folklorists have always been interested in understanding meanings of folklore texts, and in the earlier days of folklore study, that meant looking at how the folklore functioned within the community of which it was a part. This approach was valuable in that it was one of the first to firmly attach interpretation of folklore to the very people who were using it to express their beliefs and values. William R. Bascom, who identified what he called the “four functions of folklore” …suggests folklore provides: informally teaching cultural attitudes (often to younger group members); escaping accepted limitations of our culture; maintaining cultural identity; and validating existing cultural norms-essentially boil down to one function, as Bascom himself claims: “Folklore is an important mechanism for maintaining the stability of culture” (William R. Bascom 1965). #FolkloreStudies #CulturalIdentity #CommunityValues #FolkloreFunction #CulturalStability #WilliamRBascom #FolkloreEducation #CulturalEscape #CulturalNorms #FolkloreMagic #folkloreish #houstonbookstore

What do the myths and legends have to say about St Patrick’s relationship with feminism?⁣ Many of the "monsters" he battles may well be Goddess figures, Dr Jenny Butler writes on @rte_brainstorm. ⁣ “As a “folk hero”, St Patrick is the one who single-handedly converted the whole Irish population to Christianity. In legends, he did this by destroying Paganism: interestingly, many of the “monsters” he battles may well be Goddess figures.” ⁣ ⁣ “For instance, after climbing Croagh Patrick in Co. Mayo, the saint kneels down to pray and is attacked by a black bird. In some versions of the legend, St Patrick throws his bell at the bird and, in doing so, banishes her so that she cannot return to the mountain.”⁣ ⁣ Read in full in our bio/Stories.⁣ ⁣ ⁣ #Folklore #Mythology #FolkloreStudies #StPatricksDay #Feminism#StPatrick

UPES Research Goes Global! Dr. Roshni Sengupta, Associate Professor, and Dr. Kaustav Padmapati, Assistant Professor (Senior Scale) from the School of Liberal Studies, presented their fascinating research work at the International Workshop on "Alternative Heritage-Making for the Future: Asia’s Heritage Strategies Beyond the Mainstream," held at Heidelberg University, Germany, from February 2nd to 4th, 2024. Heritage-making is often discussed in terms of national politics and recognition, tourism, international notions of intangible heritage, and assessments of success or failure in heritage-making projects. Within this theme, Dr. Roshni presented her work on “Heritage-making among the Dutch-Hindustani diaspora in the Netherlands: documenting baithak gaana and launda naach performances in Europe,” which seeks to unpack the complex process of ‘homemaking’ through cultural preservation and heritage-making embarked upon by the Indo-Caribbean community in the Netherlands through everyday cultural engagements. Meanwhile, Dr. Kaustav presented his work “Performing Arts, social media, and other genders: A Case Study of the Raas Leela (Lora Rakh) festival of Assam as potential folkloric Artifacts in Queer Space,” which aimed to explore folk performances and potential queer artistic expressions in one of Assam's popular festivals, “Raas Leela,” primarily through digital media platforms like Facebook, YouTube, and Instagram. #UPESResearch #GlobalImpact #CulturalHeritage #AcademicExcellence #DiversityAndInclusion #LiberalArts #ResearchHighlight #HeritagePreservation #QueerArt #FolkloreStudies #InternationalWorkshop #HeidelbergUniversity #AssamCulture #IndoCaribbeanDiaspora

How a festival of fire and fertility connects Christian Ireland with its pagan past⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Dr Aoife Granville highlights the connections between Brigit the goddess and Brigid the saint.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ “Brigit was the daughter of Dagda, a member of the mythical Tuatha Dé Dannan (Irish warrior army). She was a poet, a smith and a healer. She was very much associated with women, fire and fertility. During Imbolg, Brigid was honoured with feasts and bonfires, in the hopes that the new season would bring a fruitful harvest and good luck.”⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ “Saint Brigid has similar associations and was said to have been born in the 5th century on the threshold of a door between this world and another. She never wanted to marry, despite her father’s wishes, and was said to have gouged out her own eye to ruin her great beauty. Much of the Grimms’ legacy has been a “what not to do” for contemporary folklorists, but their contributions are invaluable. The sheer volume of their work overall and the popular nature of the KHM have allowed for a persistence of interest in and survival of collected tales. The brothers also recognised the function of folk narratives as a reflection and reinforcement of culture and, most importantly, their amalgamation of narratives from multiple social classes speak to shared values that challenge systems of power and are still applicable today. #grimm #grimmbrothers #folklore #folklorestudies #grimmlegacy #folktales #practiceessay

There's been a lot of debate among folklore scholars about what qualifies as folklore and what's "fake lore," or literary creations pretending to have originated in the oral tradition. Some people (we're looking at you, Richard Dorson) blame these inventions for the general confusion surrounding the definition of folklore and for people focusing on aspects of traditional culture that aren't exactly genuine. This carries into the realm of folklore studies as scholars try to decide what they should research and what should be left to literature professors. We can't deny that there's a lot of material out there that sounds and looks like folklore. So can we call this folklore too? Is it worth studying? The solution to this problem is Michael Dylan Foster and Jeffrey A. Tolbert's concept of the "folkloresque." Instead of referring to literary creations as "fake lore" or even true folklore, we can understand appropriations of oral traditions and various forms of worldbuilding as attempts to authenticate fiction. Popular culture interprets and utilizes folklore to immerse consumers. This utilization might take the form of integration, portrayal, or parody. The folkloresque still plays with ideas of tradition, and because people consider these representations important, folklorists should study them. Folkloristics in its broadest sense is, after all, just the study of all the little things that people find important. This means you're free to continue enjoying media portrayals of vampires, werewolves, and zombies, even if they've differed from their historical counterparts. You can watch Studio Ghibli's Spirited Away and convince yourself this is all Japanese folklore, though the movie actually only imitates the flavor of authenticity. Sit down to revise your NaNoWriMo draft and dream up your worlds and your lore; your readers might not recognize what you invented and what you integrated, but they'll love it all the same. And if you're interested in learning more about how folklore and popular culture intersect, check out Foster and Tolbert's book!

Queer Readings of Three Grimm Tales: Motifs and Themes The cultural legacy of the Brothers Grimm is fraught with incongruities, which complicate contemporary relationships to their collected folk tales. Folklorist, Simon Bronner, highlights several antagonistic dichotomies credited to the brothers, including “international diffusion and romantic nationalism…[and]…blatant literary license and fidelity to tradition” (Magnus-Johnson 2014, 74). Though the brothers had sociopolitical justifications for revising folk tales, it is important to recognize the dynamic nature of oral narrative (even when recorded) as it interacts with various tellers and listeners, reflecting both societal values and contemporaneous literary texts. This active relationship continues as modern readers examine and cocreate meaning with existing tales. German Studies Professor, Dr Meyertholen observes that the Grimm brothers “wrote in drag” as they appropriated the voices of female storytellers and “the female stock character of the…fairy-tale grandma” (2021, 36). They were able to maintain male power dynamics as they infused folk tales with patriarchal concepts, but the resulting narratives contain fragments of nonnormative symbolism and messages of femme resistance, which are reinterpreted by diverse readers (Meyertholen 2021; Orme 2015). Analyses of motifs and themes present in Grimm tales invite a deeper look into nontraditional understandings of the texts. This paper will reflect on three Grimm tales with overlapping motifs and themes, which can be interrogated via a queer lens— “The Goose Girl at the Spring,” “Princess Mouseskin” and “Bearskin.” Link in bio to continue reading on Bridging Appalachia blog. #queergrimm #queeringfolktales #folklorestudies #folklore #queertheory #goosegirlatthespring #princessmouseskin #bearskin #brothersgrimm

“So what is a fairy tale? A fairy tale is certainly not a tale about fairies, although the fairies can become involved. It's a hybrid type of narrative, very imaginative, in which transformation, magical transformation, is at the heart of all these tales that we call fairy tales. Things that cannot possibly happen in the real world happen in these tales and so it's this imaginative quality or intrinsic quality in the narratives that are so imaginative that we don't know what to call them, we call them fairy tales because of the fact that Madame d'Aulnoy’s invented this and labeled it and made it different from other genres.” - Jack Zipes @jackzipes (episode 33) Watch on YouTube or listen wherever you listen to podcasts 🎧🎤! #fabricoffolklore #folklore #lore #podcast #folklorepodcast #nerdypodcast #womenpodcaster #podcastsofinstagram #youtubepodcast #folk FairyTales #Folktales #StoryAnalysis #JackZipes #SocialImplications #PoliticalSignificance #LiteratureDiscussion #ChildrensBooks #FolkloreStudies #CriticalThinking #AcademicChat #StorytellingInsights #IntellectualConversations #LiteraryScholarship #FairyTaleStudies #imagination

De Ceri Houlbrook was recently interviewed by @lonelyplanet about her work on Love locks. Ceri currently has a database listing over 500 love-lock sites spread across 65 countries on every continent except Antarctica. "There's something universal about the symbolism of love locks," says Houlbrook, who authored a history book about the romantically-endowed objects. "Padlocks are designed to be durable and steadfast, to hold two things together securely, to keep something safe. This is easily translated into a ritual about love, commitment and memory." I made it to not one, but two iconic locations this autumn in honor of spooky season. I wouldn't have believed you if you told me that one day, I'd be a folklorist studying American Halloween Rituals and Traditions, specifically rural haunted house attractions, and that this is how I just spend my time. Enjoying my favorite season, visiting places I dreamt of going as a kid. Wienin tutkijavierailun päätteeksi pidin tänään luennon mdw-yliopiston etnomusikologian ja kansanmusiikin tutkimuksen seminaarissa karjalaisista itkuvirsistä ja itkuvirsistä nyky-Suomessa. Ryhmä oli ihanan keskusteleva ja innostunut. Ihan paras lopetus tälle vierailulle! Muutenkin vierailu Music & Minorities Reseach Centerillä on tarjonnut oikein hyviä uusia näkökulmia ja Wien sopivasti keskittymisrauhaa kirjoitustöihin. Danke schön! Sleeping Beauty was asleep when Prince Charming “fell in love with her”. This teaches us that women are only valued on externals, and that passivity is a positive trait. It also suggests that love is only a one way force, he loved her, so it is given that it should be returned. These type of value systems set us all up for failure in real relationships. #feminism #folklore #fairytale #folklorestudies #folkloreandfairytales

I've participated in dozens of haunted house attractions, but this was my first haunted corn maze. Which is hilarious to me because my thesis advisor upon hearing my research interests said, "Oh are you describing farms with like, spooky corn mazes?" Basically, yeah! 🌽 Haunts are interesting folklore ecosystems, you've got employees, performers, and an almost inverse idea of customer service: no one pays to be harassed for an evening,. normally. Guests sometimes create little communities by accident as they traverse the haunts, for example, on the hayride, a young woman basically jumped in my lap and refused to move until the end. It was hilarious and I'm glad I could make a stranger feel safe! #hauntedhouses #hauntedhayride #maryland #spooky #FolkloreStudies #folklore #horror #academicsofinstagram #rural #urbanlegend

Wishing I could have seen this at night, this October, I've been sort of terrible at planning ahead. I took up teaching freshmen composition at a small university, and I'm doing contract work as a folklorist, it's all amazing, but exhausting. The workload has put some of the normal things I enjoy in October on the back burner, but...I'm trying! Last October, I was doing tons of field work at agricultural haunted house attractions, I was looking at the intersections of performance, gender, and capitalism. My parents live in North Carolina and this little market around the corner from their house provides coziness year round. I've always loved autumn, and as a folklorist, I think alot about ritual and tradition around autumn. Even though we are so far disconnected from food systems, sources and such, we crave participation in harvest activities. We want to prepare for the long winter, staying indoors as the natural world dies around us, until it's reborn in the spring. 🎃 #Folklore #FolkloreStudies #DarkAutumnHour #Autumn #Fall #🍂 #🍁 #Harvest #Halloween

Hello! Booklovers!! 📚 Finished 『Associate Professor Takatsuki Akirai's Surmise: And Then The Doors of The Other World Open』(Associate Professor Takatsuki Akira's Surmise #4) by Mikage Sawamura ☆☆☆☆ 📝Synopsis ”The Otherworld is everywhere - even in our own hearts." Spring. Naoya, who has successfully advanced to the second year of university, is still working part-time as an assistant under Takatsuki. What is the truth behind the creepy incident that happened at an architectural office, which is related to "4"?ー”The 4:44 Mystery” Takatsuki and Naoya go to the Enoshima area on their day off to investigate the mermaid commotion. There they meet a boy who complains that his mother has become a mermaid. ー”The Sea of Mermaids” It also includes an extra chapter, "It Was Once a Day 2," about the time when Takatsuki was living with his uncle Wataru in London. (source: Goodreads) 💖Thoughts ・This is the 4th book of the interesting and spooky series!📚✨ ・I listened to this book on audible! Its audiobook is so great as well!👂🎵 ・I felt that the distance between Takatsuki and Naoya in their feelings gradually grew closer, and their relationship as buddies took a step forward. I think it is nice that such a point is carefully depicted in this series.💖 ・If you feel that even though you are different from others, you can still survive and be okay, you will see the world in a completely different way. 👀✨ ・There are curses, not just bizarre ones. It's very common to think negatively and put a curse on yourself or to be cursed by others.💔 ・The extra episodes also impressed me. It is important to have a place where you can properly express your feelings of pain, sadness, and anger.💚 ・Can't wait to read the next book!! At the same time, Takatsuki and Naoya learn of an unfamiliar urban legend called "Marie-san in the library. It is said that if you don't solve the code hidden in the library's books, you will be cursed.―"Letters of Misfortune and Codes of Curses" Takatsuki, Naoya, and Sasakura go to a village where a legend of a demon god remains to investigate and finds a skull with a hole in its forehead in an eerie cave. Immediately after that, Takatsuki is faced with an unexpected accident.―"The House that Worships Demons" Also included is an extra story about Takatsuki and his childhood friend Sasakura, a detective in the Investigation Section, about their childhood days. Its audiobook is sooo great as well!👂🎵 ・The story behind the library's cursed code was very sorrowful but lovely…📚💗 ・I could feel the characters' feelings of care for each other. A wonderful reunion of Commission staff members with Sarah Craycraft, Fulbright English Teaching Assistant in Dimitrovgrad from 2013 to 2015. Her experience in Bulgaria inspired Sarah to pursue a Ph.D. degree in folkore studies, and last year she defended her dissertation entitled Reinventing the Village: Generations, Heritage and Revitalization in Contemporary Bulgaria, at Ohio State University. Sarah is also working on an ongoing project to document rural women's textile collections in Bulgaria. How did I miss talking about this. A very late post but -- This early time of the year I was awarded a Ph.D for my work in Film studies and Visual Culture, my thesis titled as 'Folklore In Indian Cinema : A Case Study Of Balanagamma Across Different Modes Of Performance, Time And Language' from the English and Foreign Languages University. After years of struggle, time, effort and many more emotional rides in between, many times I felt I would give up every single time, but could finish this journey with the support by many people who are extremely kind hearted around me. The craze to finish this one was totally something else. Not for anything in life, but for getting to here I am extremely proud of myself as I was never a fascinated person for academics. But today with all my heart I have immense respect and gratitude for all the academicians for being where you are. It takes high courage and your life to do so! Unless I reached till here I could not experience what it was to spend your blood to read, write and learn. I take this opportunity to thank @lalitha_aelay, @laxmanaelay , @aelaymanasa @ajayreddy3441 @aravprakash_2019, @jayarani1289 @bilukanirmala @gadapaanand , a special shout out to my supervisor Dr. Nikhila. Last week we went to the Norm and Transgression in the Fairy-Tale Tradition: (Non)Normative Identities, Forms, and Writings conference at Brown University in Rhode Island… and we are thrilled to report that we had THE MOST AMAZING time! Neither of us had been to an in-person conference since 2019. As Brittany’s partner Josh put it, that’s OVER 1000 MOONS, which is just mind-blowing. Conferences used to be something we did MULTIPLE times a year. They were a huge part of our graduate school experience and, frankly, we missed them. We know that some academics hate conferences – they can be like nerve-destroying pseudo job interviews – but we love them. Granted, this may largely have to do with the fact that fairy-tale scholars are some of the nicest, most brilliant people in the world, but it’s also because we just get so excited and inspired when learning about our colleagues’ incredible work! The Norm and Transgression conference was everything we hoped it would be and more. Read our full blog post on the event, where you can see pictures and our lists of 5 Awesome Things We Learned, 5 Hilarious Things That Came Up, 5 Things We’ve Been Pondering in the Aftermath, 5 Books We Now HAVE To Read ASAP, and 5 Movies/TV Shows We Gotta Check Out ASAP Too. https://carterhaughschool.com/norm-and-transgression-fairy-tale-conference-recap/ . . . #carterhaughschool #fairytales #folklore #folklorestudies #fairytalestudies

A report he wrote about a mysterious festival he wandered into when he was a child led him to be liked by Takatsuki, an associate professor of Folklore Studies who collects mysterious incidents, and he became his assistant. This time, the two are offered to investigate a "school ghost story," "a ghost on the set of a movie," and "a miraculous girl who survived an accident”. Something is wrong with Naoya's ears! The idea of a ‘hidden gem’ is a little overplayed, I’ll admit, but I also feel like Flass Vale Nature Reserve really does live up to it. The reserve is an area of woodland just at the edge of Durham city - and on the beautifully sunny days we’ve been having here recently it’s been a wonderful place to have so close by. This is Maiden’s Bower, a Bronze Age round cairn, and a fascinating part of history tucked away in Flass Vale, just waiting to be found. It’s completely overgrown now and is quite hard to spot, but it isn’t too far from the entrance off Ainsley street. It didn’t take me very long to find it! Round cairns were a type of burial mound in the late Neolithic and early Bronze Ages, used as the graves of prominent community members. However, the earliest record of Maiden’s Bower isn’t actually until 1346, during the Battle of Neville’s Cross. According to one source, Prior of Durham led his monks out onto the hill and they sang and prayed during the course of the battle. Apparently the Prior claimed to have been visited by St Cuthbert, who ordered him to take his monks to the battlefield carrying St Cuthbert’s communion cloth. A wooden cross reportedly stood on the monument until 1569, presumably as a way to remember the event. Interestingly, the other well-known archaeological site in Durham, Maiden Castle, shares the word ‘maiden’ in its name. This suggests to me that the theory of it coming from the Brythonic (southern group of Celtic languages) ‘moe din’ meaning 'grassy plain' is the correct one, as both sites fit this description well. The small size of Maiden’s Bower makes it unlikely that it comes from ‘fortification that looks impregnable’, as has also been suggested.
