Sevilla Memories 🩷💙💜🧡 Last week, I've to lucky to participate in a great project connecting 13 female musicians together to sing and play jazz music from female composers. When you put 13 human from 7 different countries and different cultures, in the same room for 2 days, 10h per days, it can be a challenge. All coming from different musical backgrounds, playing different music and with different view on the world, oh boy. But what came out was beautiful. New friendships, discoveries, debates and... Music. Music is what brought us together and also what made us find balance. After her marriage to trumpeter Jimmy McPartland in 1945, she lived in the United States. She founded Halcyon Records, a record company that released albums for ten years. From 1978 to 2011, she was the host of Marian McPartland’s Piano Jazz on National Public Radio. The episode of Piano Jazz with Bill Evans was later issued as a commercial album. In 2010 she was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire. The Latin-Soul-Bossanova-Jazz album contains groovy versions of “Love for Sale” and “Comin Home Baby”. It’s #internationalwomensday so I’m returning to Jutta Hipp’s splendid 1957 album on @bluenoterecords - a copy of which is in the collection @themuseumofmodernart - For reasons that are unclear - & it was such a huge loss to jazz - this was Hipp’s last recording. She was one of the very few female jazz musicians recording on such a prestigious record label at that time (much the same throughout the 1960s too). Hipp returned to painting, while working for a clothing company for 35 years. She lost contact with the music world to the extent that Blue Note didn’t know where her royalties should be sent until 2000. Three years later, at the age of 78, Jutta Hipp died in the Queens apartment where she lived alone. Hipp grew up sheltered in a small, culturally inclined middle-class family. She began taking formal piano lessons at age 9, but a harsh teacher killed her enthusiasm, diverting her to jazz. Since jazz was frowned upon as “degenerate music” under Nazi rule, jazz musicians were always in danger of persecution and severe punishment. Hipp’s listening sessions were confined to clandestine gatherings in friends’ homes and much of her continuing musical appreciation and education took place during bombing raids. Instead of joining her parents & brother in the basement shelter she hunkered down in front of the radio transcribing jazz tunes played on forbidden radio stations. From 1956 it was widely assumed that she had launched a successful career, but her self-confidence was slipping & she was finding it increasingly difficult to face the public. On tour, she ran into the vindictive side of American showbusiness. When the great drummer Art Blakey asked her to sit in with his band at New York’s Cafe Bohemia, she refused, saying she was drunk, & anyway did not think she was good enough. Blakey dragged her to the piano, & started playing at a furious tempo which she could not handle. Aujourd’hui, 27 Février 2024, la chanteuse américaine, Mildred Bailey (de son vrai nom, Mildred Rinker), morte d’une crise cardiaque à l’âge de 44 ans, le 12 Décembre 1951, aurait eu 118 ans 👵🏻🗣🎤🎵🎶 C’est la sœur du chanteur Al Rinker (un des membres des "Original Rhythm Boys" qu’on peut entendre dans quelques enregistrements de Duke Ellington et de Paul Whiteman). Du thème "Rockin’ Chair", écrit spécialement pour elle par Hoagy Carmichael, en 1932, naîtra son surnom "The Rockin’ Chair Lady". Elle fut chanteuse dans des revues californiennes et à la radio avant d’être engagée dans l’orchestre de Paul Whiteman (1929). En 1933, elle épouse le xylophoniste, puis vibraphoniste, Red Norvo ("Mr. Swing" pour les amateurs de sobriquet : elle sera donc "Mrs Swing"). Mais elle ne fait partie de l’orchestre familial qu’en 1936, après des engagements dans d’autres orchestres (Benny Goodman en 1934 et 1937). Après son divorce, en 1939, elle a des problèmes de santé lourds, dus au diabète. On aimerait en faire un des prototypes de ces plantureuses « mamas » noires 👵🏾, mais elle n’est pas noire (bien qu’elle puise partiellement son inspiration chez Bessie Smith et Ethel Waters, qu’elle en ait l’intonation « bluesy » et le swing), sa voix n’a pas l’âpreté de ses modèles, elle évolue avec agilité dans un registre plus aigu 🗣🎶🎵 Avant l’apparition des grandes chanteuses « cool » des années 1950, c’est incontestablement la meilleure vocaliste blanche de la musique dite noire.
