First Lieutenant Hector John Polla. “Green grows the jungle, bright is the dew. Sorry I am that I can’t get to you. Until our next meeting, here’s what we’ll do. We’ll change that red sun, to the red, white, and blue!” – First Lieutenant Hector John Polla, 1942 (3) 1st Lt. Polla was born in Lexington, Missouri on September 20, 1916. He graduated from Higginsville high school and Wentworth Military Academy Junior College before being admitted to the United States Military Academy, West Point on Thursday July 1, 1937. Upon his Graduation from West Point on June 10, 1941, then Second Lieutenant Polla selected the Infantry as his branch of service alongside 115 of his other classmates. (3) Into the Phillipines Throughout 1941, General Douglas MacArthur urged the War Department to build up strength to be able to defend against a possible Japanese attack. His request for additional troops wouldn’t be approved until November 1943. Among the 1,512 Officers being sent to the Philippines were 5 Graduates of the West Point Class of 1941; 2nd Lt. Ira Cheaney, Jr., 2nd Lt. Robert Kramer, 2nd Lt. Alexander “Sandy” Nininger, Jr., 2nd Lt. Robert Pierpont, and 2nd Lt. Hector Polla. When 2nd Lt. Polla received his duty station, him and 2nd Lt. Nininger were attending the Infantry School at Fort Benning, Georgia. The two officers along with 2nd Lt. Cheaney would arrive in the Philippines on November 20, 1941. The Philippines were considered a prized duty station due to the tropical climate and low cost off base living. Lt. Polla would join Company C, 57th Infantry Regiment, Philippine Scouts, and be interviewed by (then) Captain John E. Olson, the Regimental Adjutant. Shortly after arriving in the Philippines, Lt. Polla dropped off his West Point tailor made officers uniform at the Sanitary Steam Laundry in Manila. With the uprising threat of war, Lt.’s Polla, Cheaney, and Nininger drilled their assigned platoons and prepared for any attacks that could come. One task assigned to these platoons were the storing of supplies at Fort William McKinley which was designated as one of the six supply depots. *Continued in Comments*

Araw ng kagitingan! April 9 Remembering my Lolo Ambrocio Nogoy who was one of the survivors of the so called death March. Kaya daw sila nagka malaria. #fallofbataan #deathmarch #veteran

𝐀𝐫𝐚𝐰 𝐧𝐠 𝐊𝐚𝐠𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐚𝐧! Today, April 9, 2024, we commemorate the day of valor during the ‘Fall of Bataan’ in 1942. On this day many Filipino and American soldiers have shown their heroism and bravery in defense for freedom and democracy. Many Filipino and American soldiers stationed on the Bataan Peninsula fought heroically against Japanese forces on April 9, 1942, during World War II, but ultimately lost to overwhelming odds. This resulted in the notorious Bataan Death March, during which tens of thousands of American and Filipino prisoners of war were made to march kilometers in appalling conditions to prison camps. Many perished the route from sickness, weariness, and mistreatment at the hands of their captors. Commemorating the perseverance, bravery, and sacrifices that these individuals made in defending democracy and freedom of our country is the purpose of ‘Araw ng Kagitingan’. On this day, we, Filipinos, shall honor the bravery of those who fought and sacrificed their lives for their nation’s freedom and national sovereignty. American and Filipino POWs on the Bataan Death March in April 1942. Some 75,000 prisoners captured on Bataan Peninsula were forced to march nearly 70 miles. The men had already endured 3 months of hunger and disease while fighting the Battle of Bataan. On the march, they were given little water or food and no medical attention. Men too tired to continue on dropped to the side of road, where many of them died. #BataanDeathMarch #Bataan #WW2Philippines #PhilippineHistory #BataanSurvivor #BataanCorregidor #FallOfBataan

This photo shows captured American servicemen on the Bataan Peninsula in early April 1942. A Japanese guard stands over then, rifle in hand. Notice how long the bayonet is -- looks like about 1/3 as long as the rifle. Around 75,000 Filipino and American servicemen surrendered on Bataan. Approx. half of them began the Bataan Death March began at the southern tip of the peninsula. They were marched around 70 miles north of the course of a week or so. Already weakened from three months' battle, lack of food, and tropical diseases, thousands of men died along the marching route: Some from natural causes. Some killed by guards. 22-year-old Raymond Hunt was captured by Japanese forces on southern Bataan, after the United States surrendered in April 1942. The next day, he began the grueling forced march that would become infamously known as the Battan Death March. But Hunt wasn’t going to let his enemies determine his fate. At great risk to himself, he escaped the march and joined the largest Guerilla organization in The Philippines and continued fighting. By World War 2’s end, Hunt was commanding 3,400 men and women and gathering vital intelligence to aid the American re-invasion of The Philippines. This is his story. In April 1942, Ray Hunt was captured by Japanese forces on Bataan and forced onto the nefarious Bataan Death March, which was later classified a war crime. He described: “So we stumbled along, mile after mile, through heat and dust, tortured by hunger, thirst, diseases, and the accumulated effects of three months on short rations. The popping of .25-caliber Japanese rifles grew more frequent as more and more men proved unable to maintain the pace of the march. After a while nobody even looked back to see who had been shot this time.” Discover Ray Hunt's full story wherever you get podcasts as well as on the Left Behind website. TRIGGER WARNING ⚠️ Until last month, the war-related museums I’d only been to were those in Ho Chi Minh, Berlin, Amsterdam, Budapest, etc — none in my country. In school, social studies on WWII tended to tackle it in passing with more focus on national heroes pre-American period. And so I was shell-shocked to see the paintings on WWII by Amorsolo and co. at the National Museum. I found the depiction hard to believe — an exaggeration 😬😳 Last month, we decided (since we were already in Bataan) to visit the Mt. Samat memorial shrine dedicated to those who fought the Battle of Bataan. On a personal note, this was my opportunity to pay my respects to Lolo Tatay’s (a WWII veteran) fallen comrades. These are but a few of the vintage photographs we saw at the war museum. A picture does paint a thousand words. Amorsolo and co. were not exaggerating. Death March Marker in Bagac, Bataan. In the background, the Mount Samat National Shrine. The Bataan Death March refers to the forcible transfer by the Imperial Japanese Army of 75,000-80,000 Filipino and American prisoners of war. The march started on the fall of Bataan on April 9, 1942 and ended more than 60 miles later in the Province of Tarlac. You’ll see a lot of Death March markers along the national highway. I believe there is one near my old high school. The Mount Samat National Shrine (also known as the Shrine of Valor or “Dambana ng Kagitingan” in Tagalog) is a memorial shrine complex built near the summit of Mount Samat to honor and remember the gallantry of Filipino and American soldiers who fought against the Imperial Japanese Army during World War II. The complex’s most distinct feature is the memorial cross. #deathmarch #bataandeathmarch #deathmarchmarker #bagac #bagacbataan #fallofbataan #april9 #worldwar2 #worldwarii #imperialjapanesearmy #secondworldwar #mountsamat #mtsamat #pilar #pilarbataan #dambanangkagitingan #mountsamatmemorialshrine #mtsamatmemorialcross #wheninbataan #philippinephotographer #philippinephotography #travelphilippines #wheninbataan #travelphotography #philippinehistory #filipinohistory #travelbataan #asianhistory #shrineofvalor #pilartourism #bagactourism

81ST COMMEMORATION OF ARAW NG KAGITINGAN (DAY OF VALOR): VALOR OF THE VETERANS, FOUNDATION FOR A UNIFIED NATION 🇵🇭🇺🇸 Araw Ng Kagitingan (Day of Valor) gives homage to the unparalleled heroism of Filipino and American forces who, despite overwhelming odds, fought side by side to the last in their staunch defense of freedom and democracy. A memorial ceremony is traditionally held on 9 April to mark the setback of the Philippine and American Forces in the hold out on Bataan on the same date in 1942. This would serve as one of the tragic events in both Philippine and American histories, as it marked the beginning of the March of surviving Filipino and American soldiers in what would be known as the Bataan Death March. Post-war commemorations of the Fall of Bataan and Bataan Death March are commemorated annually throughout the world. #arawngkagitingan #dayofvalor #fallofbataan #bataandeathmarch #freedom #democracy #justice

Since then, every year, we honor and celebrate the bravery and sacrifice of the Filipino and American troops who fought for our freedom during the fall of Bataan. Although the celebration fell on an Easter Sunday this year, let us not forget that the Day of Valor deserves to be remembered, too. The Sycamore salutes all the war heroes and veterans on this year's Araw ng Kagitingan! 🇵🇭🫡☮️ #ArawNgKagitingan2023 #DayofValor2023 #philippineholidays #nationalholidays2023 #ww2veterans #TheSycamoreManila #ProgressiveEducationintheSouth #schoolyear2022to2023 #fallofbataan #fallofbataanday #philippinehistorymatters #philippinehistory #edukasyonph #edukasyon #schoolsph

The Philippine Consulate General in San Francisco joins the Filipino nation in the commemoration of #ArawNgKagitingan (Day of Valor)—the 81st anniversary of the #FallOfBataan during the #SecondWorldWar. Following three months of brutal yet brave resistance to foreign invaders, Filipino and American forces formally ended their defense of the #Bataan Peninsula on 9 April 1942. It was followed by the forcible transfer of almost 80,000 Filipino and American soldiers from Mariveles, Bataan to Camp O’Donnell, Tarlac—in what would be known in history as the #BataanDeathMarch. In recognition of their courage and heroism, Filipino #WorldWarII #veterans in 2016 were collectively conferred the #UnitedStates #CongressionalGoldMedal—the highest civilian award the U.S. government can bestow. #Kagitingan2023 #PHinSF

Fernando Amorsolo y Cueto 1942 Bataan Oil on canvas The master of light, as he is fondly, called is very well known for his cheerful depiction of young Filipinas amidst the beautiful the countryside. Thus, his work covering the period immediately after the second world war depicting terror, destruction and despair is a stark contrast from his body of work. His subject may be sad and dark, yet his mastery of light is still very evident. One of my favorites among his work in this period is this painting depicting a fallen soldier with his mother at his side- her eyes sorrowfully looks into the heavens- our very own La Pieta.

🇵🇭 | 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗙𝗔𝗟𝗟 𝗢𝗙 𝗕𝗔𝗧𝗔𝗔𝗡 « 𝗧𝗼𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝗶𝗻 𝗣𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗽𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗛𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 On April 9, 1942, officials in command of Bataan—where Filipino and American forces maintained the main resistance in the war against the Japanese—formally surrendered. Through the Voice of Freedom radio broadcast, Third Lieutenant Normando Ildefonso Reyes—reading a message prepared by Captain Salvador P. Lopez—informed the Philippines and the world from Malinta Tunnel in Corregidor: “ Bataan has fallen.” The Battle of Bataan (January 7 – April 9, 1942) was fought by the United States and the Philippine Commonwealth against Japan during World War II. The battle represented the most intense phase of the Japanese invasion of the Philippines during World War II. In January 1942, forces of the Imperial Japanese Army and Navy invaded Luzon along with several islands in the Philippine Archipelago after the bombing of the American naval base at Pearl Harbor. The commander-in-chief of all U.S. and Filipino forces in the islands, General Douglas MacArthur, consolidated all of his Luzon-based units on the Bataan Peninsula to fight against the Japanese army. By this time, the Japanese controlled nearly all of Southeast Asia. The Bataan Peninsula and the island of Corregidor were the only remaining Allied strongholds in the region. Despite their lack of supplies, American and Filipino forces managed to fight the Japanese for three months, engaging them initially in a fighting retreat southward. As the combined American and Filipino forces made a last stand, the delay cost the Japanese valuable time and prevented immediate victory across the Pacific. The American surrender at Bataan to the Japanese, with 76,000 soldiers surrendering in the Philippines altogether, was the largest in American and Filipino military histories, and was the largest United States surrender since the American Civil War's Battle of Harpers Ferry. Soon afterwards, U.S. and Filipino prisoners of war were forced into the Bataan Death March. #ItsMoreFunInThePhilippines #ChoosePhilippines #Philippines #KnowPhilippines #Pilipinas #Filipino #WW2 #FallOfBataan #BataanDeathMarch #DeathMarch #ArawNgKagitingan

Day of Valor 2022 || Just wanted to do something for my country's holiday💕 🇵🇭 📍 ABOUT The Day of Valor, officially known as Araw ng Kagitingan, is a national observance in the Philippines which commemorates the fall of Bataan to Japanese troops during World War II. It falls every April 9, although in 2009, its celebration was moved to April 6 to avoid it from coinciding with Maundy Thursday. At dawn on April 9, 1942, against the orders of Generals Douglas MacArthur and Jonathan Wainwright, the commander of the Luzon Force, Bataan, Major General Edward P. King, Jr., surrendered more than 76,000 starving and disease-ridden soldiers (64,000 Filipinos, and 12,000 Americans) to Japanese troops. The majority of these prisoners of war had their belongings confiscated before being forced to endure the infamous 140-kilometre (87 mi) Bataan Death March to Camp O'Donnell in Capas, Tarlac. En route, thousands died from dehydration, heat prostration, untreated wounds, and wanton execution while walking in deep dust over vehicle-broken Macadam roads, and crammed into rail cars for transport to captivity. The few who were lucky enough to travel by truck to San Fernando, Pampanga would still have to endure more than 25 miles (40 km) of additional marching. Prisoners were beaten randomly and often denied promised food and water. Those who fell behind were usually executed or left to die, with the sides of the roads becoming littered with dead bodies and those moaning for help. Only 54,000 of the 76,000 prisoners (66,000 Filipinos and 10,000 Americans) reached their destination; the exact death toll is difficult to assess because thousands of captives were able to escape from their guards. Approximately 3,000 prisoners may have died during the march, and 25–30,000 more #vrchat #vrchatPh #vrc #VR #vrchatcommunity #vrchatPhilippines #vrcfriends #vrchatphotos #vrchatWorld #vrcworld #vrcphotography #worldhopping #vrworld #virtualrealityworld #virtualreality #vrcfamily #vrfamily #vrcwholesome #vrcsfw #egirls #egirlaesthetic #virtualphotography #virtualphotographer #gamephotography #bataanday #dayofvalor #dayofvalorph #arawngkagitingan #fallofbataan #arawngkagitingan2022
