### Monday Introductions **Meet Lucy** Lucy was rescued from an auction in Texas. When she arrived at our ranch last fall, she was heavily pregnant, underweight, and suffering from a severe infection. Her front teeth were broken, and the drainage from her nose indicated a nasty infection. We weren’t sure if she would survive the winter, or even live to see the first snowfall. But Lucy has an incredible heart and grit. Despite her struggles, she never faltered. As long as she was fighting, we were determined to fight alongside her. There were many close calls, and she endured round after round of antibiotics. Over Christmas, an infection-induced early labor nearly cost her baby’s life. Yet, through all the pain, Lucy remained gentle and never showed aggression toward humans. In the early hours of April 13th, Lucy gave birth to a beautiful, healthy baby girl. We were amazed at her strength in delivering such a big baby without assistance. This was the moment we had been waiting for. With her baby born, we could finally begin more aggressive treatments to save Lucy’s life. Now, Lucy is on a twice-daily regimen of heavy supplements and grain, along with all the green grass and hay she can eat. Post-birth, she was able to stand for the farrier to receive a proper hoof trim. Our vet is optimistic, and once Lucy gains enough weight, we can proceed with dental surgery. An equine chiropractor will also help improve her hips and back. Lucy is a smart and patient mother, caring well for her baby without spooking or worrying. She exhibits the same calm and gentle demeanor with humans. We believe that once she regains her full strength, she will make an excellent horse for children. Horses like Lucy, with her backstory and resilience, know how to love deeply. We have an account set up for Lucy. They say we should work on our social media presence. They aren’t wrong. We should be engaging our followers, posting more about what we are doing, and raising desperately needed funding so we can do more, reach more, help more. Believe me, if anyone knows we should work on our social media presence, it’s me. To be honest, the three days that this one photo represents could have made about a dozen posts and who knows how many dollars for the rescue. So yeah, I get it. But what if I told you that if we are missing from the bustling streets of a fleeting newsfeed…IT’S BECAUSE WE ARE PRESENT. Here’s the thing kids, it is hard to remember social media presence when you are fully present. What doesn’t get forgotten though is the tube feeding, oxygen, plasma, enemas, and endless snuggles… that’s the stuff going through our minds when we are present. When I saw the small team come together as a force to give this foal a chance, I saw a dedication and tender kindness. They were thinking of warming his blankets in the dryer, wiping his little bum to keep him clean, and helping him balance as he took his first steps unassisted. They cancelled plans and started watching the clock to keep his tube feedings on schedule. Nobody was thinking of posting on social media. Heck, we were so tired we had to tell each other when to stop and eat something for ourselves. Despite grand efforts, this little foal’s body didn’t have what it took to survive. We take some comfort in knowing that he wanted for nothing during his short little life, and when it was evident that we were losing the battle, his suffering was not extended further. Necropsy showed that he was never going to be a healthy horse, no matter the initial progress made. The loss still stung. So while we should absolutely work on our social media presence…while we may suck at taking selfies… each person here must master a greater skill- the ability to push relentlessly for any animal in our care while constantly being sensitive to when we start losing a battle. Happy 23rd Birthday, Randy! This gorgeous Percheron Cross served this country faithfully for twelve years in the U.S. Army Caisson Platoon. He helped to lead the caskets of fallen military members to their final resting places at Arlington National Cemetery. He performed in the swing (middle pair in the funeral procession) and lead (front pair) positions. FAQ: Why do donkeys have bigger ears than horses? Donkeys ears are an adaptive feature. Donkeys have adapted to living in hotter, sparser, and more desert like regions. The large ears, and the blood vessels in them, help the donkeys cool off by dissipating heat. Air moving over their ears cools them off. Donkeys also have excellent hearing. Because their herds often have to spread out to eat in sparse environments, they rely on their ears to hear each other from far away. Did you know a donkey bray can be heard by another up to 60 miles away? 🤯 Their excellent hearing is also crucial for detecting predators, as their independent grazing habits make them more vulnerable to predators. They can even hear your heart beating! Similar to horses, donkeys also use their ear movements to communicate. When teaching horsemanship, we always encourage people to pay attention to the ears. Happy 24th Birthday, Plato! Plato is a Registered Thoroughbred formerly known as “Platitude” who had a consistent record on the New York racing circuit. He sustained several serious injuries while racing and finally ended up with a cracked knee. He arrived at Equine Advocates in 2005 and we allowed him to recuperate from his injuries in a stall for several months. Meet Peter!! 🫏🩵 Peter arrived with the most recent group of 14 wild Bureau of Land Management (BLM) donkeys, and even though he isn’t one of them, he has bonded remarkably well with the group!! It’s evident that he was very loved before he found himself on the way to the kill pen. Peter is very friendly, personable and LOVES attention!!!🩵 His hooves do need a little bit of maintenance but nothing major. He would do wonderfully well in a home with acreage for him to explore with friends or even as a family pet!!! In the summer of 2022, a young horse named La Cactis Boy came to us. He was only 5 years old and somehow ended up at an auction, which is no place for a horse like him. Cactis is an Appendix- a cross between a Quarter Horse and a Thoroughbred. He has a great personality… level headed but energetic… inquisitive, intelligent, and a little goofy. Once he gets to know you, he’ll be your friend for life. If you want to win him over, forehead rubs are the key to his heart❤️ Cactis is green under saddle, so he is looking for a kind and patient person who can help him remember his training. He stands well for the farrier, LOVES being groomed & pampered, and gets along well with everyone in the herd. Cactis has way too much potential to not have a human of his own.
