Along the way to Isle of Skye, we visited an island castle situated in the western Highlands of Scotland, on a tiny island in Loch Duich, Eilean Donan Castle. The S family is exploring Scotland and visiting their ancestral homes this week. They started their vacation in Edinburgh at Hyatt SCHLOSS Roxburghe in a balcony room. From there they traveled to Loch Ness where they are staying at Loch Ness Lodge where they are staying in a deluxe room overlooking the courtyard. While there they have a tour planned to Isle of Skye and to Eileen Donan castle which is Mrs S. ancestor’s castle (MacKenzie Clan). They will next travel to Gaslow and stay at Carlton George Hotel in a club room with a balcony overlooking Gaslow. They will tour Stirling Castle, Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park, and finish with Glengoyne Distillery. They will finish their week back in Edinburgh touring Royal Mile, St Giles’ Cathedral, Holyrood Palace. Today we made our way from Glencoe up North to a little village called Dornie. Staying at a cute pub with great food. We are literally a 12 minute walk from the pub to the famous Eileen Donan castle. I have ogled over many photos of this castle as it is so evocative and to finally see it for real is amazing. We went for a walk around the castle this evening after dinner. A picture perfect evening, so lucky! We will return tomorrow to see and learn more in daylight. Heading up north today we encountered more dramatic scenery along the way and did a detour to a very small and remote village called Glenelg to visit a couple Brochs. Brochs are 2000 year old stone structures that were only built in Scotland. Their purpose and the people who built them still remain a bit of a mystery but it’s believed that they were used as houses as well as rudimentary forts. This is my wife's castle. OK, she doesn't own it, but her mother was a descendant of the Macrae clan, and this castle is their ancestral home. It's called Eileen Donan and it's in a town called Dornie. I took this shot way back in 2003 on our second trip to Europe. This is also a photo that I fixed with one of the very early versions of Photoshop. Easily the most famous of Scottish castles; Eileen Donan stands on its own island, connected to the mainland by a footbridge. The castle was built in the 13th century and its main purpose was to protect from Viking raids. The castle then became a stronghold of the Clan Mackenzie and their allies, the Clan MacRae. Eilean Donan also played a role in the Jacobite risings of the 17th and 18th centuries, which ultimately culminated in the castle’s destruction.

Day 5, Part 5 Last stop for the day was to the Eileen Donan Castle. Eilean Donan Castle is one of the most recognised castles in Scotland, and probably appears on more shortbread tins and calendars than any other. It is strategically located on its own little island, overlooking the Isle of Skye, at the point where three great sea-lochs meet, and surrounded by the majestic splendour of the forested mountains of Kintail, this setting is truly breath-taking. Eilean Donan means “Island of Donan” and refers to St Donan, who lived on the island at the beginning of the seventh century when Christianity was first introduced to the Western Isles. Excavations have found evidence of an earlier Pictish fort, but its origins have been lost in the mists of time. The first castle was built in the mid 12th or 13th century during the reign of King Alexander II (1214-1249). It was built to protect the lands of Kintail from Viking invaders, who controlled much of Scotland’s west coast and Hebridean islands. Since then, at least four different versions of the castle have been built and re-built as the feudal history of Scotland unfolded through the centuries. That castle was partially destroyed in a Jacobite uprising in 1719 and lay in ruins for the best part of 200 years until Lieutenant Colonel John MacRae-Gilstrap bought the island in 1911 and proceeded to restore the castle to its former glory. #eileendonancastle #scotlandexplore #scotlandtravel #explore #visitscotland #scotlandhistory
