Adapted from Ludovic Kennedy's classic investigatory book of the same name from 61, though somewhat toned down, in terms of the depravity depicted: this is an accurate account of real life, London necrophiliac serial killer John Christie, (Played brilliantly with a low key sinister vibe by #richardattenborough) who murdered at least 8 women in the 40's & 50's. The film shows how he would entice women into his flat, under the pretence of being able to help them with medical issues - Christie would sedate, strangle & then have his way with their corpses. Only part of the killer's story is depicted here. The film focuses on the story of Timothy Evans (Also very well played by #johnhurt, who won a Bafta Award for the role.) From Wales, Evans, was a kindly, naïve, easily manipulated neighbour of Christie's. His wife Beryl ( #judygeeson) & their unborn child were amid his victims. In an outrageous miscarriage of justice, driven by the real murderer's false testimony Evans was wrongly hung for Christie's heinous crime. Evans was officially pardoned, years too late in 66. The movie also features #patheywood & #isobelblack. The acting is universally 1st rate. '10RP' works on 2 levels. As a disturbing account of a psychopathic killer's story, though his underlying psychology is never explored & bloodless as the film is, Attenborough's Christie is incomparably more chilling that the vast majority of on-screen killers. The film is beautifully shot by Cinematographer #denyscoop. As a #moviewithamessage, '10RP' makes a powerful statement against the death penality. Considered by some critics to be 1 of the greatest #crimefilms ever made &10RP' is downbeat but powerful movie. Highly recommended. #richardfleischerfilm

Venom. German terrorists (Klaus Kinski, Oliver Reed) kidnap a child, negotiate a ransom with police surrounding the building. The child's deadly black mamba snake is on the loose in the same house. I liked a decent amount of what was in this, I like that the terrorists don't get along, there is some real suspenseful scenes involving the snake, I liked seeing it slithering through the ventilation system, the whole finale is really good and I even like the end that thinks it's going to have a sequel. What I didn't enjoy as much as how there is a decent amount of screen time with the policeman, and the material with them seems weak in comparison and isn't near as interesting as what is happening in the house. I love the scene where the snake is hiding in a liquor cabinet. Tobe Hooper was originally attached and quit over creative differences. Klaus Kinski chose to act in this film over Raiders of the Lost Ark and he bashed that film's script. Director Piers Haggard said Oliver Reed was scary and often testing him, and said he was difficult, though not as difficult as Kinski, and said he was cold, and at least Reed had a sense of humor. Reed and Kinski fought like cats, and there were shouting matches and Oliver wouldn't let up. (Q: Why? A: British husband.) I’m going to be your host here for the next two weeks, so to give myself a little structure (one of the hardest things about being a freelancer IMHO), I’m going to ask myself a series a questions. And YOU can too! Let’s start with... Q: How did you come to be a DoP? A: Well, everything stems back to my deep love of movies. I was born in California, but moved to a small town in New Jersey when I was 5. My parents decided we shouldn’t have TV, but we could watch movies on something they called “a video monitor”- VHS player and CRT with no cable, no antenna. The local, independent video store was a favorite hang-out, and when I was in high school, I got a coveted job there. We went to the cinema a lot too, and every year my mother would bring home an antenna from her office so we could watch the Oscars live. In all my formative years of movie-watching, I never knew what a cinematographer was. It wasn’t until I got to university, I realized it was a job. For my first post, here are a few stills from some of my favorite films growing up. My “Desert Island Discs”, if you will.
