What do you do after an exciting yet strenuous hiking adventure? You do scenic drive-throughs and easy lookouts at Custer State Park, Needles Highway, & Mount Rushmore! Custer State Park is a 71,000-acre wildlife preserve, featuring wildlife like prairie dogs, bison, bighorn sheep, pronghorn, and several bird species. We were super lucky and excited to see the Burrowing Owl 🤩 This park is South Dakota's first and largest state park. The original plan was to do Custer State Park and Mount Rushmore, but somehow, while we were doing our routing, Needles Highway and Sylvan Lake popped out on the map so we decided to take a detour (good thing about having some flexibility when travelling on the van). We did not regret making the detour as the landscape was breathtaking. A highlight of Needles Highway, other than rugged granite pillars created from millions of years of erosion, is the Needles Eye Tunnel. It is a narrow tunnel through the granite that you can drive through (unfortunately, this is man-made). Spent our first full day in Custer hiking and recovering from the drive yesterday. It was about a 12 hour drive, including all stops. We started with some easy hikes today. We love hiking the Sylvan Lake Loop, which is where we started the morning. It's about one mile in total, a few places where you have to scramble over rocks but overall a pretty easy hike. Both my kids were able to handle it, maybe better than the adults! After lunch and a little nap we headed out for another short hike at Legion Lake. That one is another loop that is about 0.7 miles. More rock scrambling but, again, really an easy hike. Plus if you go counterclockwise around the lake you end at a playground, my toddler was a big fan of that fact! Took a little break from work to recharge my soul and gear up for a long summer at the Refinery.... Day 1 Majority of the driving with a couple of stops: Mystery Caves State Park in MN and Falls Park in Sioux Falls, SD. Day 2 Badlands National Park: This is the place that initiated the entire trip out there. And, is exactly what I needed. Mount Rushmore: because why not. Lol. Beautiful trail around the site. Ended the evening with driving the Custer State Park wildlife Loop...so many animals out! Day 3 Black Elk Peaks and Sylvan Lake: most challenging hike of my life and first time getting lost. Trail I used wasn't clearly marked. Suppose to be 7.5 miles but it was more before I realized I was off trail 🤣 At the top of the 7,200' elevation is a breathtaking view. Even though I gained a friend while hiking here, I will not be doing this again. Lol Wind Cave National Park: hiked allover looking for a trail to get me to the Fire Lookout Tower. Crazy Horse: What a powerful story behind this design. Unfortunately, couldn't get up close to it due to the severe weather that day. But this beauty has an estimated completion date of 2037, and I can not wait to return to see the progression and the end result. Deadwood: wild town, with great local live music. Day 4 Devils Tower National Monument: walked the longest trail around the base and have never felt more drawn to a location than I did here. Gained a friend here who hiked and shared breakfast with me. Back to Badlands as there was a trail and an overlook I really wanted to complete. Then the drive back to MN.... Day 5 Minneopa State Park Met up with a friend to grab a Jucy Lucy from Matt's and take in a Twins game. Totals: 45 hours driving 2,600 miles driven 43 miles hiked

This is one of our favorite areas we explored in South Dakota… 📍Custer State Park! 🥾🦬🛶🧗♀️ #AD This is our second time visiting @travelsouthdakota and we are still so amazed by this park! It is truly an outdoor adventure lovers paradise! Also, can you believe its only a 6 hour drive from Denver? It makes the perfect long weekend getaway! Custer State Park easily rivals some national parks we have been to. Encompassing 71,000 acres in the Black Hills, Custer is home to abundant wildlife (and one of the largest bison herds) and adventure. Here’s a few of our favorite ways to experience Custer State Park: 🥾Hike Little Devils Tower (3.8 miles RT) this hike offers incredible 360 degree views of Black Elk Peak and the Cathedral Spires! 🛶Spend the afternoon at Sylvan Lake, you can paddle, swim, fish, walk around the lake or even plan a picnic. 🥾Hike the Sunday Gulch Trail behind Sylvan Lake (3.9 miles RT) for even better views of the rock formations! ✨Go stargazing or if you’re lucky, spot the aurora borealis! Custer is a dark sky park which makes it the perfect place to spend the evening. 🚗Drive the Needles highway, you will go through the famous needle eye tunnel and have some of the most incredible views of the park! 🦬Drive Wildlife Loop Road, another incredible scenic drive in the park. Here you will have a chance to spot bison, pronghorn, whitetail and mule deer, elk, coyotes, burros, prairie dogs, eagles, hawks, and a variety of birds. 🧗♀️Go rock climbing! One of the most unique and fun ways to experience these incredible rock formations! We went with a guide at @sylvan.rocks.climbing and had an incredible day climbing behind Sylvan Lake. Custer State Park is dog friendly and there is an entry fee ($20 for 7 days!) When visiting please remember to leave no trace and take care of the places that take care of us. Pick up any trash you may see on the trail, donate or volunteer and support local businesses! Additionally, respect signage and local guidelines.
