It was another great night last Thursday @thecrossingbarnes when we tasted some fantastic English whiskies in honour of St George’s Day. New Cotswolds Hearts and Crafts Pineau des Charentes Cask. The English Cotswolds Distillery has released the fifth edition of its Hearts and Crafts series. The single malt matured in barrels seasoned with Pineau de Charentes (a fortified wine from western France). On the nose, the whiskey is said to be “full and sweet” with “fresh stone fruit,” followed by “summer berries, almonds and woody spices” on the palate. Its finish is described as “fruity, with light oak tannins and a hint of spice.”

After this mornings visit to @cotswoldsdistillery we thought it would be best to sample their Old Tom Gin - this is a slightly sweeter gin. This gin starts with a liquorice flavour which falls away to its citrus peel notes. I often think about whisky and what it means. Not necessarily about drinking it but rather the craftmanship, the love and the art that is required to produce truly great whisky. It’s a fickle yet rewarding spirit, a spirit with soul and expression. It invokes memories and feelings, good and bad, in a way no other spirit can. Pictured are the two dearest whiskies for me at the moment. Totally different but very much the same. One quite old and one very young. Both carry a fresh, fruity and ’green’ profile but what really unites them is that they do both create THAT feeling when sniffing, tasting and exploring them. Having benefitted from mentorship herself, she couldn’t pass up an opportunity to contribute to the OurWhisky Foundation’s upcoming Demeter Collection auction. I was delighted to get a bottle of the latest single cask release from the #cotswoldsdistillery named ‘The Patchett’ after the distillery’s Global Ambassador and Cask Sales Manager, Rob Patchett. This was matured in a first-fill Madeira cask using 100% Cotswolds-grown barley and is described as having cherry and almonds on the nose and sweet sponge cake and cream on the palate - like a Victoria Sponge cake as Rob would say. Bottled at cask strength with an ABV of 60.2% it will be interesting to taste what effect a couple of drops of water has on it. They are producing some fantastic drams in the first distillery in the Cotswolds and I’m hoping to get to visit them at some point this year. Have a great week everyone. The English single malt is from the amazing #cotswoldsdistillery , their Signature single malt. It’s the first whisky made entirely in the Cotswolds, using 100% locally grown barley and matured in first fill bourbon and red wine casks. Bottled on site and natural colour and non-chill filtered.
