Here is my first post about the completed Strata coffee table, a project I worked on for the last months. Strata #001 is made of ebonized red oak and finished with danish oil. For this table I played with asymetry, curves, and inspirations from bridges.The extreme angles in the legs make it aggresive and aerial. This piece, "416 Annunciation," refers to the 416 fire outside of Durango, Colorado in 2018. It burned over 57,000 acres. In 2022, my daughter and I went up and explored the fire scar. My head was full of thoughts about destruction and rebirth as well as the symbolism of medieval Annunciation scenes. (This is what happens sometimes when an erstwhile medievalist wanders in the woods.) Such scenes were very common subjects in devotional triptychs and recount the story of the angel Gabriel appearing to Mary to announce her impending divine pregnancy. Lilies often adorn the staff carried by Gabriel and commonly appear next to the figure of Mary who typically sits in devotion, reading a prayer book. The mariposa (aptly named) is associated with wildfires, often appearing soon after the fire itself -- a testament to resilience, beginnings found in endings. As humans we iterate an exercise against time: we accumulate objects, we collect and record stories and encapsulate them into personal and collective archives. Working primarily with traditional woodcraft, Mexican artist Edgar Orlaineta has long explored the relationship between art, craft, and the industrial, at the intersection between sculpture and design. His hybrid sculptures are informed by a mild irony, allowing him to combine references to Modernism, history, literature, and pop culture, consistently intertwining amidst playful characters and biomorphic forms. Similarly in DePass’ carpentry work, the inspiration from mid-century modern design encounters eccentric imagery from nostalgic Americana culture. This results in both a critical and ironic commentary of the resulting superficially idiosyncratic aesthetic of consumerism and appropriation which eradicated boundaries between high and low cultural products, a substitution for something that can appeal to the taste of mass society. Although many shapes in Nature may appear straight or vertical from a distance, it is nothing but an illusion. Even some of the greatest monuments in the world feature "entasis", (applying a slight curvature to a surface for aesthetic purposes, or increasing strength), while, in general, we feel better and most at ease when surrounded by curves. Even studies in neuroscience have suggested that our brain (male and female alike) prefer curves over angles, and we generally describe curved spaces and furniture as more beautiful, while it may even affect our behaviour and thinking. There's a lot of talk about showing one's face, and promoting oneself in combination to their work, to get sympathy, to make it personal, to get "liked" and "likes". In the Art world (elsewhere too, but this is Art we're talking about) it shouldn't matter if one is fat or "ripped", has a toothpaste - advertising smile or rotten falling teeth, if they are model material or just plain ugly. The vision is what matters... And the work....So this is the man behind the vision and the work (and everything else)... . On a second note, after a potentially very serious accident while working, I've added some protective gear, or "battle armour", if you will. Rudimentary, but serves the purpose.
