Camp Sierra 1901-1934. About 3 years ago, we posted a few pics from Camp Sierra, and here are a few more. Camp Sierra sat high on Sunset Ridge above Altadena. C.W. Seifert operated the camp for several decades, hosting hikers and horseback riders who made their way up the trail from the Cobb Estate at the top of Lake Ave. In our archives, we have several photos from the early 1920's featuring a woman named Ruth Darrow. Here are several more scenes from the Camp as well as a map indicating its location. All that is left now is a flat bench of land lined with Coulter pines at the end of the driveway off of the Sunset Ridge Fire Road. —---1st image - Here are some of the buildings at Camp Sierra in the 1920's. In the distance, you can see the San Rafael Hills with the unchanneled Arroyo Seco at left center —--- 2nd image - Before selfies, people still did crazy things. Less formal post for this one as I didn’t actually complete the official hike. From top of Lake Ave toward White City Ruins. Many options from the Cobb Estate entrance. The switchbacks straight up are a solid workout for any skill level. It’s basically a single track and popular. As Los Liones is to Pacific Palisades this one is to Altadena. But the crowds were light today and it was a rollicking sprint up and back. Had a 1.5 hour window. I knew this one was time-controlable and hoped to bag Echo Mountain for the 3rd time. Didn’t quite make it. 2.2 miles up (out of 2.7). 4.4 in 1:15 on Saturday March 16th 1445-1600 +1,240’ Quick shout out to Upstep, maker of mail order orthotics. Had mine for a couple weeks now and this was first hard effort on them. Knees feel great! Cobb Estate hike, aka "haunted forest", which we have experienced last year as well. Pic 1, however, shows what we think is part of the foundation of the Cobb mansion in the upper left. We walked around it, seeming likely a filled-in basement. There are many plants not indigenous to the area, with the entrance flanked by two aging palms and huge yucca. I even found lavender bushes and wild geraniums on the property. As pictured, the roadway with curbing exists ye. Sadly, debris from a party, bottles neatly wrapped into a plastic bag, their unto the bushes....Who was responsible for packing OUT? In the late 20s-early 30s (I forget the date), lumber baron Charles Cobb passed, leaving the estate to his widow, who then handed it off to the Masons as a home for nuns. The famed Marx Brothers then bought the estate, including the mansion and surrounding 122 acres until 1957. From there, it was vacated and, well you know the rest of the story.....hauntings and destruction abound. The U.S. Forest Service somehow got involved, and it is now public land. The view from the mansion remains is spectacular of downtown LA, even Long Beach and the Pacific. The neighboring trail up the canyon to Echo Mountain is not for mild hikers,as there are many narrow, rocky, under low bushes, but SO beautiful. #hikingpasadena #hauntedforest #cobbestate #7000steps

This route was extremely tedious but well worth it. After the Cobb Estate, a 107-acre property on a hillside just outside of Los Angeles, was purchased by the Marx Brothers in 1956, it soon developed a sinister reputation. The area would become known as the "Haunted Forest" as rumors began circulating about horrific crimes and murders that were taking place inside this secluded area. According to one account, a nun was raped and hanged in the forest in the 1950s. Other reports claim that a mysterious gravity-defying hill has been the site of multiple car accidents. Meanwhile, visitors to the forest have reported having the distinct feeling of being followed, hearing disembodied screams in the night, and witnessing strange blue floating lights — said to be the work of either spirits or aliens. In recent years, the estate's reputation has proven hard to shake, as multiple bodies have been discovered on its trails. Random pics, from up and down, before and after the Echo Mountain and Mount Lowe Railway history lesson. 1: Cobb Estate, the trailhead, not long after sunrise time. I hiked 7 miles yesterday: started at the old Cobb Estate, which led to the Sam Merrill trail, up to Echo Mountain and Mount Lowe. I made it to the site of the former Echo Mountain House then had to turn back. I’ll definitely have to go back and explore more parts of the trail.
