A client asked me yesterday how to better deal with the seasons of life. In his case, it was the seasonal demands of his job and the necessity to work 80+ hours a week for certain periods of the year. His question reminded me of the importance of ceremony and ritual. I responded by asking him how he marked beginnings and endings? Do you know when the season began? Do you know when it ends? If so, how? If you don’t know when it starts and finishes, are you conscious of how energy leaks out and bleeds into other areas of your life? There is a reason that psychedelic medicine is facilitated in a ceremonial way rich with ritual. It contains the experience; it keeps the energy tight. It ensures that there is no leakage or waste. Our lives can be the same. You will be shocked by how much cleaner your life feels when you incorporate ritual when your life becomes one long-lived intentional ceremony. I’m talking about simple things. Like lighting a candle when you get home from work. Burning some sage before you sit down to have a beer. Take three deep breaths before turning on the TV. Something! Anything! To mark the end of one thing and the beginning of the next. This practice also requires discipline, and discipline is what will get you up the mountain. Not motivation, not sprints, not high-caliber output. Just simple, repeated steps. And before long, your life begins to take on a new meaning. You begin to honor yourself for the things you do. My parents' “religion” was science and... the newspapers. I was brought up to believe that the material world, the material plane, are all that exists. My parents impressed upon me that only what I can perceive through my senses, and what can be proved by science, are real. What I “sensed” didn't matter, didn't exist, was ridiculed as “imagination” and it soon became clear that I was better off stopping any inward listening altogether. It was only as a young adult that I started traveling back inward to retrieve that which was lost, all I discarded as useless in my childhood. One of the fascinating things I discovered along the way was that some indigenous cultures have no word for “imagination” since they have no differentiation between the inner and the outer: what is Perceived = is what IS. I remember the very first ceremony I attended. It was 1992 and we have just moved from the U.K. to San Diego, California. I was browsing a metaphysical bookstore on a quiet morning and felt an impulse to talk with the owner. She was an impressive woman with gray hair, and we begun to speak of our spiritual quests. My spiritual thirst was evident and at some point she said: “I am part of a Celtic Coven, would you like to come to our next circle as my guest?” I was thrilled, as this was an answer to a prayer! I've been looking for a Coven - a spiritual teaching circle - for a long time. At that moment I realized one had just found me! I was antsy with anticipation, and when the day came I was both nervous and delighted. No specific details stand out after all these years except for the deep realization I felt: I was HOME... It felt so familiar being there: my blood, my bones and cells remembered... There was no hesitation about joining in, and at the end of that evening I became the newest member of “Daughters of Danu” the Great Celtic Earth Mother. I went on to train with the Elder Priestess, Dorothy, for A-Year-and-A-Day, as is the tradition, at the end of which I was initiated as a Celtic Priestess. A ceremonial end to a community ceremony: Two weeks ago today the Procession of Light lit up the night in Point Reyes Station. The event was attended by an estimated 150 people from different communities in West Marin, young and old. Many dressed in costumes that represented light to them. Many also brought lanterns they had made at home to carry in the procession. Others had made lanterns at my studio in the weeks before the event. Before the procession there were performances, sacred ceremony, invocations, and a gathering measure of excitement as the lanterns were lit in twilight. The event was blessed by a clear calm evening. And the full Blue Moon rose on the horizon during the procession. From the energy of the night, and from comments that are still being expressed, everyone that attended had a very memorable time. The closing ritual: When the Procession of Light ended around 9:30 or 10 that August 30th evening and everyone had left, I placed the two bamboo poles adorned with flowers that led the procession back in their original stands. These had been carried by Anna and me throughout the procession as symbolic portals through which people passed at different points during the procession. Here, now, alone in the bright full moon, they could bask in the energetic presence still resonating where people first gathered and the opening ceremony took place. Their presence now became a spontaneous closing altar. They would be blessed by the moon, the night sky, and be kissed by the morning dew for the next 14 days. And today, after two weeks of holding court in an empty field as a symbol of the power and beauty revealed that night, they will be removed. I’m in conflict with myself. I get lost amongst the what to dos. My heart calls out / desiring to share / but isn’t quite sure of itself. What could I possibly have to share? ANAM CARA In the Celtic tradition, there is a beautiful understanding of love and friendship. One of the fascinating ideas here is the idea of soul-love; the old Gaelic term for this is anam cara. Anam is the Gaelic word for soul and cara is the word for friend. So anam cara in the Celtic world was the "soul friend." In everyone's life, there is a great need for an anam cara, a soul friend. In this love, you are understood as you are without mask or pretension. The superficial and functional lies and half-truths of social acquaintance fall away, you can be as you really are. Love allows understanding to dawn, and understanding is precious. Where you are understood, you are at home. The anam cara experience opens a friendship that is not wounded or limited by separation or distance. Such friendship can remain alive even when the friends live far away from each other. Because they have broken through the barriers of persona and egoism to the soul level, the unity of their souls is not easily severed. When the soul is awakened, physical space is transfigured. Even across the distance, two friends can stay attuned to each other and continue to sense the flow of each other's lives. SHEDDING Shedding skin layer by layer; unveiling the newer me. Dropping parts that break the heart; revealing the unseen. Breaking blocks and barriers with all the strength of love. Lifting dreams to bigger schemes to raise to skies above. So many layers I've dropped and skinned; how much of me is here? Is this soul now stood in whole; is there more to fear? For now I stand in skin so fresh, a new world I can see; Born through gain beyond the pain; a better sight of me. But layers never ending make the journeys plight; Forcing ways to clear the haze; turning dark to light. So pain I know will follow; each growth a gentle tear. Skin removed I'll feel as proof to overcome each fear. No longer dodging hurt and pain, but taking each new wise. No suffering when shedding skin; each pain a rise to skies.
