The sumptuous Chinese redbud (Cercis chinensis) is our final feature of April, growing proudly near the street on Parker Ave. The numerous small flowers hugging the stems on this plant have fully emerged from bud, but very few have opened. Despite this, the tree is still the showiest plant on the block, with the violet-pink petals and carmine red calyxes easily catching the eye. This plant will be in full bloom for the upcoming week. Perfectly rounded, puffy clusters of flowers appear right out of the bark on the trunk; certainly not a characteristic you’d expect to see on a flowering tree in New England. Observing the tree up close, these conspicuous clusters dot the entire framework of the plant, ranging from just a couple of waking flowers, to dozens. The tree is small and stocky, just over 10 feet high. Emerging shoots and leaves are just becoming visible at the ends of the branches. I’d be foolish not to revisit this plant when it reaches full glory in a few days. Chinese redbud is native to interior China. Although largely absent from northeastern gardens, it offers many of the same fantastic features as our native eastern redbud (C. canadensis). Dare I say it is showier than its indigenous cousin? Chinese redbud is smaller than eastern redbud, typically maturing to under 15 feet tall and wide. In nature, it usually takes on a vigorous, multi-stemmed form, with thick twigs and stems, and leathery dark green foliage. Blooms open about a week or so earlier than the native redbud, producing a slightly stronger pink flower color. ‘Avondale’ is a popular floriferous cultivar, with electric pink flowers. I don’t think the pink is as vivid and bright on our feature plant, comparing it with photographs of ‘Avondale’ blooming in California over two months ago. Cauliflory, or the production of flower buds right out the bark and stem, is common practice for this plant. The flowers are edible and taste like peas. Te beginnen bij Cercis chinensis 'Avondale'. 🌳 Cercis chinensis 'Avondale' is een cultuurvariëteit van de Chinese judasboom die al op jongere leeftijd bloeit en kleiner blijft dan de soort. De cultuurvariëteit 'Avondale' is ontdekt in een tuin in Avondale (voorstad van Auckland, Nieuw-Zeeland) en door Duncan & Davis Nurseries verder in cultuur gebracht. Het is een kleine boom of meerstammige struik die zo'n 6 meter hoog wordt. De bloei is opvallend, mede omdat deze plaatsvindt voordat de bladeren zich ontwikkelen. Snapped this shot last weekend down south of Petersburg, Virginia. You probably can’t find a more prolific bloomer plant than a Chinese Redbud.
