"Mt. Plastic" - Whenever possible, please Reuse • Recycle • Repurpose ♻️ For the month of May, I set aside small plastic objects I use, found, or was gifted, such as the small plastic people that were given to me by students I tutor. They found the project especially interesting. I personally was truly amazed how much was collected in just a month. At the center is a small plastic cup to add support. The items are positioned so each can be seen. You will have to zoom in to see some things. It is constructed over a wood base that was then placed on a plastic "Lazy Susan" so the viewer can rotate it to get the full effect. I purchased a glass dome to set over it to prevent breakage and accumulation of dust. The title of the piece, "Mt. Plastic," is written at the base using plastic letters. This is my fourth piece using found objects to make a collage. I've included pictures for those who are interested. The ‘payesas’ (peasant women) of rural Ibiza had an innate understanding of balance - intrinsically bound to the land around them, they were shown the natural order of the universe through the patterns of the seasons: sowing and reaping, abundance and scarcity, joy and loss. The payesas, I think, knew exactly how much was enough, and how to let go. Similarly, Eivissa has had to learn to let go of *them* over the past twenty years, as the last generation of payesas has gradually disappeared from the island’s landscapes. But last Friday, a monumental event took place on Ibiza which stood for all that these rural women ever exemplified - over 1000, mostly Ibicenco people of all ages gathered outside the @consell_eivissa to demand new limits on tourism, and an end to a half-century era in which Ibiza’s native inhabitants have watched their natural landscapes and local culture being steadily degraded, for the sake of a spiralling economic growth benefiting only a select few. The strong payesa spirit of Friday’s demonstration, organised by @proueivissa, was even present in physical form via Na Catalina, the giant payesa puppet which I made last year for Extinction Rebellion Ibiza @xribiza, who supported the event. Since then, as news of this event has spread through the international press, Catalina’s stern face and enormous cardboard fists have been spotted in UK newspapers including @thetimes, the @dailymail and @thesun…. 🙃 Thank you, payesa Catalina, for the reminder that sometimes, in order to restore natural balance, force is required. I was crazy about art as a kid, it came from nowhere, neither of my parents are artistic in the slightest, but they could see that I loved painting, drawing, and making things. I loved using my imagination, and on dark, wet, dreary days, a pencil became my means of escape. In my family art was a 'hobby' though, something you could earn extra from when you grew up. No one ever mentioned 'career', that was impossible, akin to wanting to grow up to be a wizard. But children dream, and they invent future possibilities, however far fetched they may appear. A dream remains a dream unless you have the courage to chase it. One characteristic that all creative people possess is resilience, that's how we learn. Something goes wrong, we learn from it, the learning becomes our newest skill, we move forward. Whilst I wait for Discovery One to fix earlier today I made a start on my next layered spacecraft. A little easier and restricted to the size of a sheet of cardboard instead of letting things run wild with my previous piece. There's again a hollow frame for this one before I build up with layers. I'll need to consider how each I build up and meet at a peak, this will be a learning curve. Im at least happy with thr exhausts again, that I've built up with layered rings. Not sure how things will go with the smaller elements. It's honestly refreshing to start a new piece and begin to leave one behind. Discovery One is 'technically' finished but it's not. As much as I can leave this piece it's not structurally one piece. I began by adding some detail to the pod bay doors before fitting the ball to the rest of the piece to fix...which it has. However a joint further down the body isn't strong enough to hold as it. I need to consider how I'm going to resolve that issue. A quick option would be to connect and add dowels below to display. One to definitely sleep on for now. Otherwise I'm happy with the outcome, but I don't feel I can really celebrate until it's whole. The Bloodletting, mixed media on cardboard, 53 x 46.5 in, 2024. In Los Angeles, a city notoriously preoccupied with youth, wealth and superficial aesthetics, I saw how these cultural values were impacting our urban landscape. All over town, historic buildings were being torn down and replaced by brand-new structures built from materials that weren’t intended to last. In response to this widespread planned obsolescence, I began utilizing salvaged materials - objects that have been discarded and deemed worthless by society. Thank you @photographeribiza for these lovely images from the first public sharing of ‘Unión’, a performance created by @_celia_ruiz with set design, scenic art and illustration by me, within a new theatrical project we are calling The Living Library. I recently saw a video from @channel4news about a puppeteer creating performances for children in the displacement camps of Gaza, in which he said: ‘Our shows offer counselling and emotional support, entertainment and education - all of the things we have lost.’ This sums up so well what I feel storytelling and theatre have always been, in their essence, and I have been reminded of this so strongly whilst creating this performance with Celia. ‘Unión’ brings to life two very, very old, multi-layered and archetypal stories - Iron John, from the Brothers Grimm, and Vasilisa the Brave, as written about by Clarissa Pinkola Estés in her book ‘Women who run with the Wolves’ - to explore two opposing paths of personal initiation, traversing the terrain of the masculine and the feminine, and arriving at a final meeting place where roses bloom and sleeping dragons stir. It was a rich experience to perform this piece to children and adults alike, and to see how the visual symbolism of these two intertwining stories affected each group in very different ways, and on very different levels, none less meaningful and valid than the other. 🐚 A co-production with the @ajuntamentdesantantoni. Set construction by @pocapoc_ibiza. Special thanks to @bendunwellauthor for offering all-important rehearsal space. Onwards with the stories… 🐚⚱️🐚

It also includes the first 3 letters of my aunt's name just as it appeared on my uncle's right arm during their 60 years together. The man doesn't represent anyone in particular, except I attempted to show the inner strength and resolve each person displayed in how they lived out their lives. I try not to use plastics, or mix in non-recyclable stuff. I don't use expensive tools, brushes or paints. I don't use craft knives or anything electrical. Just a pencil, a pair of scissors, tape, and school glue. The ideas I share are original.
