Capromancy: Divination by smoke 🕯 Combined with a witch’s intuition is a tradition handed down through the generations. Once only a folkloric practice, “reading the smoke” as my Slovak grandmother called it, has both positive and negative implications for a magick practitioner. Taking into consideration the scientific variables which can affect your candle (such as a nearby breeze from an open window) a steady line of white smoke moving towards the witch or straight upwards is a very positive sign. Blessings are coming, your petition answered, or the spell has taken. If your candle is encased in glass, reading the soot is another topic entirely. Safe to say, white soot is still a good omen but, can carry with it implications of spirit communication, successful unhexing or uncrossing. Black smoke, on the other hand, can be read a number of ways and the interpretation depends on whether the candle is encased. Remember to always first rule out the obvious: did you overdress your candle in oils or herbs? Is the wick off-center and the flame is burning directly against the glass? Are you reusing an old candle whose wick is already spent? Those of us who practice this art generally precede it with lychomancy (flame gazing) or follow it with ceromancy (divination through melted wax). I've spent this summer wildcrafting; discovering, harvesting and drying out herbs for both medicinal and witchcraft purposes. 🌿🧙♀️ A few of my favourites i've managed to find in the wild are: Mugwort, Red Clover, Sage, Chamomile, St John's Wort, Calendula, Motherwort, Elderflower, California Poppy & Yarrow. 🌼 These are all useful in both spellwork & as medicine. Lavender grows at the front of my house too in abundance, along with Blackberries 🙌 There's something exciting about finding the ones growing wild though, like they were meant for you - to help you in some way, a bit like how crystals seem to call us. . Some of the herbs i've been infusing in oil and making into tinctures and extracts that should make an appearance in witches kits at some point ~ and I really loved making the sacred sites mini vial sets with the wildflowers & herbs from Stonehenge, Avebury & Glastonbury. 🌿 I hope to do something similar when I visit Tintagel and The Museum of Witchcraft & Magick, along with other mysterious sites and stone circles in the West Country later this year. The Chained Oak is a local Legend in the county of Staffordshire, England 🌳 The story goes that in the early 1800's, the Earl of Shrewsbury was travelling back to his home in the English countryside; Alton Towers Estate, via horse & carriage, when an old beggar woman stopped him on the forest path next to a huge oak tree. The old hag begged for a coin for food but the Earl refused her and told her to step away. The woman screamed that for his cruelty she was putting a curse on him so he would know what it was like to suffer ~ she pointed at the oak tree which stood out as the tallest in the whole of the forest. She said that whenever a branch fell from that tree, a member of his family would die. 🧙♀️ The Earl dismissed her, rolled his eyes and told his coach driver to just carry on home. However, that same night one of his nephews was struck down with an illness in the night and didn't make it through. The Earl couldn't forget now the old woman's curse and went back to check the oak tree, sure enough one of the main branches from the tree had snapped and was hanging down. So the Earl did the only thing he could think of and ordered the branches of the Oak Tree to be chained up, hoping to prevent any further deaths. To this day the Old Oak Tree, now hundreds of years old and a giant of a tree, remains chained up in the forest. This local myth is the backstory for the ride 'Hex' in what is now Alton Towers theme park on the same estate. Today we went in search of The Chained Oak with my friend who lives in Staffordshire, it isn't on the map or sign posted so it can take a bit of wandering but it's quite exciting! Instructions for Smoke Scrying 🧙♀️ Capromancy or 'Capnomancy' is the art of Divination using smoke, usually via the flame of a candle but you can also do it by burning incense or even by a fire. 🔥 Get fully focused for Divination, some people master a trance-like state before asking spirit a question or quickly put themselves in a deep meditative state so they can receive the answers (attuning) yet still remain alert. In the beginning if you treat Divination as a ritual, as you would a spell - cleanse the room, put some incense on, light candles, set up an altar etc....this can help ease your mind to relax and quiet the daily chatter. 🙏 Focus single pointedly on the subject you want guidance with for a few minutes, then ask the question either out loud or in your mind such as "Should I move jobs" if you've had a job offer and you're not sure if it's right for you to move let's say. 🔮 Now if the smoke wafts TOWARDS you - that is a positive sign - it is 'likely' yes, this is meant for you. If the smoke is NARROW and rising straight up in the air this is the clearest cut yes, or that your desires have been successful if you have just completed a spell. 🧙♀️ If the smoke is BILLOWING instead like big clouds this isn't a good sign and you should perhaps not rush into anything, weigh up your options. If the smoke is moving AWAY from you this is a sign that there'll likely be some obstacles to what you want and you may need a great deal of perservence, you may have to chase it if you really want it, to make it yours. 🙏 If the smoke blows to your LEFT we can take this as a sign you're too emotionally invested in the outcome and if you're not careful you may sabotage it, if you can let go of the stress & worry around it then it may be okay. 🔮 If the smoke blows to your RIGHT you will need to use your head rather than your heart here, to make smart decisions for the long term & your future happiness. 🔥 There are other interpretations, this is just the way I remember it. Candle working for a different client..this was supposed to be a "mending working". I don't always get a good sign or message on the get go, but it helps to make things clearer on the situation clients go through. Here the candle broke before I was even able to lit..3 breakings show.."3 strikes" a message that this person gave up after a third incident..also, notice the letter "f" at the side on top of the dried rose petal? Indicates that someone, or can be a place, (not always the initial of a person)..in this case after speaking with the client, the letter "f" meant a close "friend" that has been influencing this person may have had most part for this break up. Just wanted to share, that just because a person does workings to help people doesn't mean that it's always a happy message..but that whatever the message you receive, you can work on the problem better or understand more clearly what's going on with the situation..either way..it is something that gives you answers to. I do candle reading workings incase anyone is interested in one. I do ceromancy (divination by wax), capromancy (divination by smoke), and pyromancy (divination by fire/flame). I observe all these things during a candle reading. Here a client received a cobra snake figure...well..on 3 consecutive nights. A snake in general can mean "caution" someone can be lurking to do you some kind of harm..but in this case, a cobra snake figure on guard post means really watch out!-"caution" because someone is there to strike at you..or someone that you definitely need to keep an eye on..(may not be good company) This person did get the cobra snake figure 3 consecutive nights..I can say on the last one, the client will turn this person over..Even though maybe this person is out to get the client (for envious reasons..maybe) the client may have smooth him/her over..perhaps warming his/her heart at the end.(a heart figure shows on the cobra snake on last pic) Thought of explaining how this works: The candles are of glass cylinder and are about 8" inches in height. I either do a sigil in the candle, depending on the purpose. I add certain herbs, dried flowers, specific oil, sometimes dead things or whatever objects I choose fit, and I add certain color of glitter so I can receive certain signs/messages from my guides (can be figures, numbers, letters). I also observe the fire lit, wax, smoke, and glass of the candle each night till I exstinguish and wake the next morning..lighting up the candle in the day and off between 3 and 4 am. It mostly takes about 3 days of observing till the wax is gone.
