One of my favorite aspects of photography is how it stops time. In an instant you can capture pure emotion, and that feeling can be felt by others through the image. I was lucky enough to get to cover members of @hardkourperformance and friends as they took on the two day challenge of the crossfit competition @bridgetownthrowdown last weekend. And it was inspiring to witness. The workouts definitely tested the athletes and it was amazing to see so many just give everything. These images are just a small sample of what transpired. And, they are not of finish-lines, or PR’s, or some grandiose moment, they are the moments in between. The moments in time where we can see the raw emotions on the athletes faces. You can hear the audible scream. Feel the contemplative moment. Get a sense of how hot the air was in there. These moments give a glimpse of what goes into being a competitor. More to come for sure, but these images speak to me. They talk of dedication, perseverance, resilience, athleticism, strength, and of course heart. All these athlete inspire me. The Triple R workout at @bridgetownthrowdown : 🔸 400m hill sprint 🔸 1600m row 🔸 1.1mile trail run — Felt confident going into this workout but that quickly changed once it started 🙃 We were grouped together in the same heat with two other divisions: the Teens and Intermediate Women 📶 Everyone went out hot for the 400m sprint // Got to the rower and hopped off 8th place in the heat // Once we got to the trail run, that’s when I was able to catch a few people at that half mile mark; eventually taking 1st place on the last hill sprint to the finish line 🏁 — All the trail runs, hill repeats and speed work on the track definitely paid off on this event ✅ — 📸: @professor_utonyum — #bridgetownthrowdown #hybridathlete #crossfit #sungod #chicknlegs #injinji #hoochiedaddyshorts #hoka #nobull #tyr #hardkourperformance #hkp #wearehardkour #quadzilla
Congrats again on a second place win Marissa! 🎉 I'm so proud of this girl. Sure taking home a podium win is cool, but I'm most proud of how far Marissa's mental game has come. With every competition, there are moments of discouragement, those of disappointment, or just times when distractions come into play. In the past, she may have let those moments convince her that she wasn't good enough but this weekend, I witnessed how this girl took control of her emotions and spoke life into herself. She never let any single event dictate how she was going to show up for herself in the next one. And when we knew she would have to beat her own time HARD on the last workout to pull ahead, she put her head down and freaking did just that. Overall, we were really happy with how training went this last cycle and there were no big surprises going into this competition. We had a plan for every event and for the most part, they were executed. Of course, there's always work to be done but we're on the right track and this girl is only getting better and better. (Not to mention, the plan of attack is only getting more and more refined as we learn more about her capabilities). One thing is for certain: she's no longer allowed to join any local intermediate comps.
