Happy 60th Birthday 🎂 to Lady Sarah Chatto (née Armstrong Jones) who was the 4th of the 1964 Royal Babies. She is the youngest child of Princess Margaret and Anthony Armstrong Jones and the niece of Queen Elizabeth. Lady Sarah was born on May 1st 1964 in Kensington Palace, London and her full name is Sarah Frances Elizabeth Armstrong Jones. She was christened in the chapel at Buckingham Palace on July 13, 1964 (see photo 1). Her father the 1st Earl Snowdon was a professional photographer and there were many family photos of the children. She was especially close to her cousin Prince Edward and spent a lot of time with Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip and their children. They also spent time at equestrian events and were seen travelling to some of the royal estates and at Easter and Christmas. 📸Hulton Archive, via the Daily Mail, Popperfoto // Getty Images, Allstar, Camera Press, Michael Stroud // Getty Images, Twitter, Alpha. #ladysarahchatto #ladysaraharmstrongjones #princessmargaret #lordsnowdon #anthonyarmstrongjones

After last week’s visit to Leighton House I thought it was time after 40 years to revisit Sambourne House. It was created as a home in the late 19th century by Linley and Marion Sambourne. He was an illustrator. It’s a remarkable survivor for the middle of London, ending up in the hands of their granddaughter Anne, Countess of Rosse until passing out of the family, well-preserved, in around 1980. One photo probably shows what Anne chose to keep by her bed, including Harold Acton’s Old Lamps for New, published in 1965. #linleysambourne #sambournehouse #hollandpark #punchmagazine #illustrator #olivermessel #lordlinley #anthonyarmstrongjones #staffordterrace #haroldacton

Tiara Tuesday; the tiaras of Princess Margaret. The Poltimore Tiara. It originally belonged to Lady Poltimore the wife of the 2nd Baron Poltimore and was made in London in 1870. It’s made in the style of the Victorian era and features diamond scrolls of flowers and floral elements. Lady Poltimore wore it to the coronation of George V in 1911. Her family put it up for auction in 1959 and it was purchased by Princess Margaret. This was quite revolutionary at the time and 29 year old Margaret wanted something that she could call her own, without family connections. She wore it on her wedding day in 1960 (see photos 2-4). She continued to wear it on many occasions and also for the famous portrait in the bathtub taken by her husband Anthony Armstrong Jones in 1962 (see photo 7). The tiara was part of the auction of the Princess’s belongings after her death and was purchased by a private buyer, it’s whereabouts are now unknown. 📸 Hulton Deutsch / Corbis / Corbis via Getty Images, Getty Images, Lord Snowdon/ Camera Press, Tim Graham : Getty Images. #princessmargaret #princessmargaretrose #poltimoretiara #tiaratuesday #princephilip #anthonyarmstrongjones #lordsnowdon #earlofsnowdon #ronaldreagan #queenelizabethii #britishroyalfamily #royalfamilyarchive

The story behind Princess Margaret's bathtub and tiara photo. Princess Margaret bought the tiara for £5,500 in 1959 (equivalent of £128,813.55 today. Like many late nineteenth century tiaras, the jewel was convertible. It could be taken off its frame and transformed into a fringe necklace and 11 brooches. Before the announcement of her engagement Princess Margaret wore the piece as a necklace. For her royal wedding on May 6, 1960, Margaret debuted the dramatic tiara. She famously wore the tiara while posing in bathtub for a photo taken by her husband, Anthony Armstrong-Jones. The famous photograph was taken in 1962, but it became public in 2006. The tiara was sold to private buyer for $1.7 million in 2006.

Princess Margaret was always a fashion trendsetter in her youth, the perfect model for Christian Dior’s New Look. She was also a big fan of texture and liked velvets, satins, chiffons and furs. 1. A fitted velvet coat for her son David’s wedding in October, 1993. 2. A velvet skirt suit with a shimmering top in 1965. 3. With Princess Diana at the wedding of James Ogilvy in 1988 wearing a light dress and elaborate hat. 4. Mod look Princess in the mid 1960s with a fur trimmed jacket and matching cap. 5. With her husband, Lord Snowdon at a memorial service for JFK in December, 1963. 6. The Snowdons and son David at a wedding in the mid 1960s. 7. In 1955 wearing a velvet coat and an unusual corduroy hat. 8. The ultimate example of Dior’s New Look, flowing silk dress over a very fitted velvet coat and small hat in 1953. 9. Another fitted coat with piped edging and silky cap. 10. Today I finished The Other Windsor Girl by Georgie Blalock whom I did a Q&A back in the fall if you want to read all about that click on the link here https://booknotions.com/qa-with-georgie-blalock/ . Being a royal fan I enjoyed it. It was about Princess Margaret the late Queen Elizabeth’s sister told through the eyes of her fictional friend Vera Strathmore. This was my first time reading a novel from Georgie Blalock and I was not disappointed. I liked Vera’s character and in someways she felt like Margaret that her life wasn’t entirely her own. I liked her cousin Rupert since he encouraged her dreams. Of course as I read the novel I couldn’t help but picture Vanessa Kirby and Ben Miles from The Crown as Princess Margaret and Captain Peter Townsend. Being the romantic I rooted for them despite knowing the tragic end. Like Vera I wanted to warn Princess Margaret against marrying Anthony “Tony” Armstrong Jones. He was no good for her. The epilogue was bittersweet, I did wish the book didn’t have to end it was that good. Part of me wished it covered the numerous affairs Margaret and Tony had but that would have been too depressing. It ended where it did. Thank you @georgieblalock for this wonderful novel. I sped through this in a few days and can’t wait to read more of your books. #princessmargaret #anthonyarmstrongjones #royalhistory #windsor #petertownsend
