Klute (1971) The actual premise of the movie - psychopath is out to kill hookers - is yawn inducing, but this is actually a political movie. It's the first of Alan J. Pakula's "paranoid trilogy," followed by the Parallax View (1974) and All the President's Men (1976). Neither of those was very good, in my opinion. With the prominence of tapes, and the elements of being watched and listened to (remember, this was a newer concept back then), this connects more to Le Samouri (1967) and The Conversation (1974). Watergate hadn't happened yet, and Klute is very much a response to the conspiracy theories afloat about the JFK assassination. Early on, a sketch of JFK is seen on Bree's wall. And screenwriter Andy Lewis ( who got an Oscar nomination for this script, but whose career stalled after this) had been a speechwriter for then-senator JFK. Because ultimately, Klute isn't the story of a psychopath, it's the story of a cover-up, employing a patsy to cover for the real killer. But the main reason to see the movie is for Jane Fonda's Oscar-winning performance. She's anything but the hooker with the heart of gold (Lewis has to get some credit for that); instead, she radiates intelligence and magnetism in every scene. Donald Sutherland, playing the title character, fades into the background.
