Gilliesia atropurpurea Gilliesia atropurpurea is an elegant geophyte from central-northern Chile that is both rare in the wild and little seen in cultivation. There are four tribes within the subfamily Alliodeae, one of which is Gilliesieae in which Gilliesia atropurpurea is placed although it is sometimes encountered by the synonyms Gethyum atropurpureum or Solaria atropurpurea. Much of the taxonomy of the tribe Gilliesieae still remains unresolved. Gilliesia atropurpurea has an unusual floral morphology that is a characteristic of the Gilliesieae and with its spidery star-like brownish-purple flowers and its three contrasting yellow anthers it makes for a showy specimen. In what little literature there is on this plant you will come across references to its odour. My experience is that it is somewhat malodorous - the expression is 'damp dog' - but it is very mild compared to the pungent lingering odours of some of the Araceae: Arum dioscoridis, Arum elongatum, Helicodiceros muscivorus, Dracunculus vulgaris or Sauromatum venousum to name but a few or the pungent close-up knockout punch of Orbea variegata, a succulent member of the Asclepiadoideae... Gethyum atropurpureum. For lovers of the rare and unusual. Native to a restricted area around Santiago, Chile this winter growing bulb has small to 2cm flowers of an astonishing dark velvety chocolate. It’s part of the Allioideae subfamily of Amaryllidaceae. It needs close inspection to appreciate its beauty but it is apparently frost hardy in a very well drained position. So, die letzten Tage wars hier eher etwas ruhiger, muss manchmal auch sein.😉 Dafür heut mal wieder die Sonne genossen. Heute hat sie endlich mal den kompletten Tag gescheint🥰 Leider ist meine Kamera immer noch in der Reparatur und somit gibt's nur Handybilder. Gestaltet such mit Wind dazu, noch etwas schwierig, da vernünftige Bilder hinzubekommen. Aber ich hab es zumindest versucht: "sie war stets bemüht"🤣🤣🤣 könnte man wohl so sagen. Meine Allium sind nun mächtig am Blüten öffnen und die Bienchen freuen sich darüber und sind ultra fleissig am Pollen sammeln.
