Agapetes rubrobracteata A close look at a flower of this epiphytic blueberry relative from Vietnam. A white urceolate corolla fades to pale green lobes that curl back from a mouth that's barely wide enough for the matching pale green style that singly protrudes. Pulling back one of the petals reveals flat hairy filaments that hug the corolla, bend inwards towards the middle and meet again at a ring of fused anthers surrounding the style. For extra flare, the anthers have cool spurs that stick out and slightly down. The bracts in these pictures are barely tinged red at the margins, but under brighter conditions they are solidly deep red, hence the specific epithet rubrobracteata. This is a plant—Agapetes serpens—I always like to see, and wish I saw more often. It checks a lot of boxes on my interest list—epiphytic, caudiciform, Erica family, attracts hummingbirds. This specimen was once mine, until it became too rangy for my space. I sold it to a client a few years ago, and have continued to take care of it since. It lives in close proximity to the coast, which is ideal—in terms of temperature range—as it does not tolerate heat very well (it is native to the Himalayas). I have transplanted it a few times since it found it’s new home. Did you know that this plant is related to blueberries. This is the Agapetes megacarpa a species of flowering plant in the Ericaceae. Common names are: Angkhang Firecracker ,大果树萝卜, ประทัดอ่างขาง. The A.megacarpa is a medium sized evergreen epiphytic or sometimes lithophytic shrub that can grow up to 5m tall and is hardy to zone 10, the leaves are glabrous oblong or lanceolate shaped, the flowers are pink, urn shaped and grow in clusters. This species is native to 🇮🇳 to southwest 🇨🇳 and south to northern 🇹🇭. This is the first of a series of posts we will be doing on our recent botanical foray to Sikkim in late June and July. Like all good plant trips, it answered numerous questions, posed others, and put triumphant check marks by numerous plants on our life list. One of the first plants that got our juices flowing was the Lipstick Vine, Aeschynanthus parviflorus which we saw commonly at lower altitudes as an epiphyte. The closeup photo shows the typical red form but sometimes we would see an orange variant. This was previously known as A. sikkimensis but molecular work in the last 15 years has sunk it into A. parviflorus, whose range extends from the Himalaya into Indochina. We are quite certain that unidentified collections we have of this from Yunnan and Vietnam are of this species, so our Sikkim adventure answered questions from Vietnam and Yunnan. How this can have such a wide range is easily understood once the seeds are seen, which are very tiny and light and adorned with long feathery appendages designed to ride the winds. This is a frost-sensitive species but like many in the genus, would make a good houseplant whose stems would trail over the pot to three feet or so. The third image has another interesting epiphyte in the lower left which is the trailing plant with opposite leaves - Agapetes serpens.
