BRIDGE TO TERABITHIA (2007) A charming, heartbreaking and touching family drama with enough fantasy. Although it's another case that I wouldn't mind someone saying the book is better since I actually find the film partially too rushed and short, it still has a special place in my heart. Aaron Zigman's score is a bit of mixed bag to me but mostly on positive side. A very good thing about it is that it's like a sibling score of his excellent FLICKA including a few similarities in the main theme - at least they help making the theme pretty catchy and easier to follow - but appropriately less of Americana and more of fantasy vibes through some magical choral passages and fun John Williams-esque orchestrations. But as much as it's highly effective at supporting the journey of the kids and their imagination, there's a drawback for not being able to make a few sad scenes impactful as the music is somewhat too light and anonymous. I know some audiences might be okay and could cry already but I personally need to be triggered a bit more through better thematic rendition plus instrumentation. Step Up - 3,5/10 Sendo um clássico intemporal conhecido por toda a geração de 2000, decidimos aventurar-nos neste filme. A nossa opinião está bastante dividida, tanto em aspetos positivos como negativos. Começando pelos positivos, não há como negar as músicas e danças vibrantes do filme, que nos fazem abanar o capacete em vários momentos. As coreografias e os cenários estavam muito bem conseguidos. No entanto, quanto aos aspetos negativos, a atuação estava muito má e a história era muito básica, ao ponto de conseguirmos prever tudo o que iria acontecer, como iria acontecer. Além disso, a má atuação fazia tudo parecer muito forçado. Talvez o momento que tenha surpreendido mais os espectadores fosse a morte de Skinny, mas até mesmo esse acontecimento estava escrito nas entrelinhas. This is my second post in like as many days talking about Bunny DeBarge’s album “In Love” and that’s because it’s FANTASTIC! 🥹 This song, “A Woman In Love”, is a fan favorite and it’s not hard to see why. It’s heartfelt and emotional and was written by @bunnydebarge herself. One of my other favorites is album closer “I Still Believe”, also co-written by Bunny and features a killer sax solo and strings that will tug on your heart, and gorgeous harmonies during the chorus. The whole album is a blast from start to finish, with tunes written/produced by the prolific @dianewarren , Reggie Lucas and duo Aaron Zigman and Jerry Knight who wrote many hits for The Jets. Other standouts are “Let’s Spend The Night” which was co-written by the late Bobby DeBarge and “Never Let Die” which has a great bridge and again, great harmonies and overall production. It’s a fantastic listen for any DeBarge or Motown or 80s enthusiast… I’m so glad it’s out again and sounds fantastic 😭 I’ve had it on repeat the last few days and it’s just been a joy. 🥲 SEEK IT OUT. 10/10. MARTIAN CHILD (2007) A delightful film as expected though I find some parts of it too bland and wouldn't look this good if there wasn't John Cusack. By the way, nice seeing Joan Cusack playing his sister on screen. Aaron Zigman's score featuring the orchestra plus glassy sounds is appropriately soothing and surreal. However, it's unfortunately a case that reminds me why I used to criticize him as second-rate Thomas Newman who also can't make thematic material impactful; and I have already considered the dome scene where the orchestra sounds a bit bigger than usual. A pesar de que estoy atareado con otros especiales y de hecho voy retrasado en el de este mes. Hoy fue el día del padre. Comúnmente no posteo nada al respecto, pero quise hacer algo este año, por eso traigo una de las mejores películas que muestra la naturaleza de la paternidad al extremo. John Q: John Archibald (Denzel Washington) es un hombre de clase media baja que trata de llevar el día a día con su esposa e hijo, hasta que su hijo sufre un fallo cardiaco que lo obligara buscar un donante por un nuevo corazón, solo que el seguro no lo cubre. Llevando a John a tomar medidas extremas para salvar a su hijo. Dirigida por Nick Cassavetes (hijo del famoso director John Cassavetes) nos da un drama potente que explora la paternidad en sus extremos con una fuerte crítica social al sistema de salud. La narrativa es sencilla y directa, es la historia de un hombre que decide tomar acción en sus manos, arriesgando todo por salvar a su único hijo. En aspectos generales, está bien, pero nada destacable o memorable. Lo que la hace destacar, para mí, es su dirección y actuaciones. La historia nos muestra todas las trabas del sistema de salud estadounidense y desvela ciertos secretos sobre los seguros para seguir manteniendo a la gente pagando. Es una fuerte crítica que muestra los estragos de la gente de clase baja contra ese poderío multinacional. Además de tener un fuerte anclaje emocional con la situación del hijo, que solo hace que aumente nuestra empatía hacia el protagonista, ni que decir de sus acciones. Y lo otro son las actuaciones, con un reparto de viejas leyendas como Robert Duvall y otras nuevas o un poco olvidadas de la época como Ray Liotta o James Woods. Pero es que Denzel es todo aquí. Simplemente, el papel perfecto que muestra su complejidad en construcción de personajes y emoción. Tremendo como siempre. (Concluye abajo)

The Notebook If you know me, then you know my love for The Notebook. But not only is the movie extremely touching, but the soundtrack is as well. There isn’t any singing done by the actors, but you can still feel their characters throughout each note of music. The main title and “Overture” are beautifully constructed by Aaron Zigman, as they set the whole feel of the movie, and the deeper message. One thing I really like about this soundtrack is how it doesn’t rely just on an original score to tell the story of two lovers. It mixes in several songs that were released in the same time period as the movie, which is nice. You get ones such as “Alabamy Home” and “Diga Diga Doo”. I also love the presence of swing in this soundtrack. You get plenty of Benny Goodman through the tracks “Always and Always” and “One O’Clock Jump”. I also love the use of “String of Pearls” by Glenn Miller. Glenn Miller is truly one of my inspirations, as he’s inspired me in so many ways. So, whenever his music is used, I truly enjoy it. The rest of the score is really well done, with some very powerful tracks, like “Allie Returns”, “Noah’s Journey”, and “One the Lake”. Like I said, Zigman is able to put beauty and emotion into each measure. Even without watching the movie, the soundtrack tells a story. You can feel the love connection that Noah and Allie have, which is why the music is so important. But the one track I want to point out is “I’ll Be Seeing You”. The first time you hear it in the film, it’s performed by Billie Holiday. It’s well done, but the one that pulls at my heartstrings is the version done by Jimmy Durante, which you hear towards the end. I remember the first time I heard it, and I quite literally teared up. The love and meaning in the song exemplifies the whole message of the movie, which is why it’s a perfect addition. It’s just so beautifully performed, and especially painful in the scene it was included in. Overall, this soundtrack is gorgeous, and though it’s not one I would listen to frequently, it’s still nice to hear every once in a while. I would very much recommend it to those who love romance/mushy music. This soundtrack is officially Berry Approved!
