Rajah Carruth made history by becoming the third Black driver to win a NASCAR national series race and the second to win a truck series event, securing victory at the Victoria’s Voice 200 in Las Vegas. A graduate of NASCAR’s Drive for Diversity Program, Carruth's win reflects the program's success in nurturing diverse talent, especially as two out of the first three races in 2024 were won by its graduates. Carruth's achievement follows in the footsteps of Wendell Scott and Bubba Wallace, showcasing progress in NASCAR's commitment to diversity and inclusion, with Wallace serving as a mentor to Carruth, who expressed gratitude to his team and sponsors for their support and remains optimistic for future successes. Born in 1921 in Danville, VA, Wendell Scott learned the art of auto mechanics from his father. He mastered the ins and outs of every engine, and how to drive them as fast as possible. Besides mechanical skills, Wendell shared another skill set with other fellow racers: running moonshine. However, there was one thing that Scott didn’t share with any of the other drivers: the color of his skin. As a Black man in the Jim Crow South in a sport dominated exclusively by white men, Wendell Scott had a lot to overcome. Wendell started driving in races run by organizations other than NASCAR. Spectators and drivers shouted slurs at him. When he tried to register for NASCAR, officials refused to allow him to participate. They told Scott that he was welcome to enter his car in the race, so long as it was driven by a white man. In time, many of the drivers began to show Wendell respect. Beyond just his driving, it was clear that he grew up the same as them: a blue-collar, hardworking, young guy who’d fought in the war, ran moonshine, and just wanted to drive fast. He convinced a lower level, part-time NASCAR employee, Mike Poston, to enroll him in a race. Mike warned him that he would be purposefully knocked around by other drivers. Wendell responded, “I can take it.” Before a 1954 NASCAR race in Raleigh, all the white drivers had their gas paid for by the promoter while Scott was given nothing. The next day, Wendell Scott ran into NASCAR's founder, Bill France. When Scott told him about what had happened, France pulled out his wallet, paid him twice what he was owed, and said, “You're a NASCAR member, and as of now you will always be treated as a NASCAR member.” It wasn’t the end of prejudice towards Wendell Scott, but he hit the tracks with a newfound determination to win, ending up in the Grand National Series. ~Figure of Black History: Wendell Scott (The first Black NASCAR Driver)~ Wendell Oliver Scott was born on August 29, 1921 in Danville, Virginia. His father was an auto mechanic and personal driver for wealthy whites in his area. Mr. Scott made it a mission to learn mechanic skills from his father to have more options in life. As a teenager Wendell decided to drop out of highschool to drive taxi cars for a living. He would even go on to become a mechanical engineer in the army during World War 2. If you have ever seen the movie “Greased Lightning” starring Richard Pryor and Pam Grier, then you have heard of Wendell Scott. He was the first African-American NASCAR driver with a career beginning in 1951. Facing challenges of racism, he beat the odds to even being inducted into the NASCAR Hall of Fame in 2015. He passed in 1990 at the the age of 69 but his legacy lives on! Every first weekend in March, NASCAR drivers add commemorative decals on their cars for races in Vegas. There is also a nonprofit organization founded by his grandson that sponsors drivers, including Rajah Caruth! Stay tuned for more history on African-Americans in the car world!
