Last week, GAIN’s Executive Director, Alpa Amin, and Director of Legal Services, Adriana Heffley, met with White House Advisor, @tomperez, to discuss our work with the City of Atlanta to help migrants who have recently arrived in Georgia. Funded through FEMA’s Emergency Food and Shelter Program, GAIN is providing assistance in partnership with the City of Atlanta and nonprofit organizations including the IRC, the Latin American Association, Casa Alterna, and others. Alpa and Adriana discussed our efforts to provide legal orientation to pro se asylum applicants and the importance of recognizing immigration legal services as an immediate emergency response need for new arrivals. We’re proud of our collective efforts through this partnership and grateful for the opportunity to connect with the federal government to share more about the impact of this essential work!

Thank you to all the participants of our bi-annual Welcoming Communities Coalition Partnership Council meeting for joining us. During the meeting, we shared experiences and learned about collaboration and partnership building, with the aim of brainstorming ideas to make our community more welcoming to immigrants and refugees. We also asked all attendees to share their goals for the Coalition's next 5 years. The next meeting has been scheduled for April 17, 2024, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at Robron Centre (740 Robron Rd, Campbell River). We still have a few available seats, so you're welcome to come join us! During the upcoming meeting, we will reflect on the last 5 years, and discuss how we as community organizations can collaborate and make a significant impact on the successful settlement of newcomers.
