Some of the beautiful faces of the innocent victims of the animal agriculture industry. The first and last time they get to see the light of day is on their way to the slaughterhouse. Once inside they begin screaming constantly while being "unloaded" from their transport, workers screaming and barking at them (imitating dogs) as we stood outside listening to the repeated whacking sounds of paddles being beaten against their bodies to force them off the trucks. Pigs are smarter than dogs, so when they arrive they know nothing good awaits them - the stench of fear, faeces and death hanging thick in the air like a blanket of terror. We are helpless to prevent what awaits them, but we are trying... trying to wake people up from their cognitive dissonance, wake them up from the MEATrix that has people believing murdering a sentient being can somehow be "humane". Tomorrow morning these sweet angels will be herded into the gas chamber gondolas, descending into Carbon Dioxide that is so highly concentrated that their lungs will begin to burn from the inside out in the carbonic acid. If this were a truck full of puppies the same age, there would be public outrage and droves of people joining us to help bring an end to this needless suffering... but because they were born with hooves instead of paws, society tells us that torturing these babies to death and feasting on their flesh is "normal". When future generations look back, they will ask us how we could be so barbaric, they will ask us WHY we didn't do something to stop this eternal triblenka. It's that time of year again... people are beginning to make preparations to celebrate Christmas with their families - but we are forgetting that animals love their families just as much as we do. The unwillingly sacrificed body of an animal should not be the centrepiece of ANY table, let alone during a celebration of peace and love. We have been blinded by propaganda our entire lives, being taught that animals are ours to use, abuse and murder, just so that we can feast on their flesh. The reality is that no animal walks willingly to their death and the immense suffering they endure is conveniently left out of the marketing campaign. After all, no decent person would be happy to raise their hand and say that they are proud to be the cause of such barbaric violence and bloodshed. Being vegan doesn't mean that you have to miss out on your favourite holiday meals, it just means that you take the extra few seconds to look up the plant-based alternative and purchase that instead. We can still celebrate with our loved ones and enjoy an array of delicious food, but it never has to be at the cost of the someone else's life. I don't know why our volunteer pool seems to have shrunk so much, there used to be anywhere from 10 to 30 people who would come to vigils for chickens, pigs, as well as sheep and cows, but these days I'm lucky if I'm joined by this many activists. @thesavemovement aims to peacefully bear witness at slaughterhouse locations and we used to have a lot of support for the various chapters in Naarm (Melbourne). Seeing the huge turnout of activists and volunteers at other events is wonderful, but it also breaks my heart to know that we don't have the same support. Melbourne Animal Save runs events every single month at three slaughterhouse locations, so if you are interested in sharing some support with attendance our way, it would be greatly appreciated. If you read the Vice Australia article about a man in NSW who was sent to prison for killing an Ibis, then you'll probably understand why this frustrates me. The comments under the article are predominantly along the lines of "what is wrong with people" and yet, I can almost guarantee you that most of the commenters would be regular consumers of chicken corpses. So where is the public outrage for the millions of birds who are killed annually for humans to feast on their flesh under the guise of "humane slaughter"? Why is it that people are able to recognise how inherently wrong it is to take the life of one kind of bird, but simultaneously find it totally acceptable for an entire industry to brutally murder another kind of bird by the millions? Today I went on my first rescue mission - meet Snow, a six month old puppy who was rescued from a rural pound in New South Wales. Thanks to the help of amazing rescue volunteers, little Snow was transported to Victoria where she was microchipped, de-wormed and given a health check before I drove her to her new forever home. Snow was very timid at first but, after I sat and spoke with her for a little bit, she edged her way closer and closer until she was eager to sit on my lap. With her trust earned, I gently picked Snow up and got her settled in for the two-hour drive out to the country. She was such a good girl and slept almost the entire trip - she must have been exhausted. Snow is now happily united with her new family, safe and sound in a beautiful forever-home. Presumably hit by a car, this poor baby was still laying in the middle of the road when I spotted them. Initially, it appeared to be a dog that had been hit - still, a member of the Canidae genus; a beautiful red fox, common in local suburbs. One rather precarious u-turn later, I got to a place safe enough to stop the car for 30 seconds with my hazard lights on so I could retrieve their body. Sadly, it was apparent upon first sight that this beautiful fox was deceased. I wish I could have done more. If you ever hit an animal while driving PLEASE STOP!!! Whether they are a dog, cat, kangaroo, fox, or cow, there are both wildlife/animal rescue organisations and vet hospitals located in every major city with people ready and willing to help in these situations. It doesn't take much to stop and see if you can help if you're unable to avoid an accident and hit an animal. I do not go to vigils for myself, I go for the victims of the industries that have abused them to the point where they are no longer even considered victims. I devote my time and energy to spreading the message of veganism not because I wish to force my beliefs onto others, but because I, too, used to think that eating corpses was normal. In two months I will have been vegan for five years and have just passed the two year mark as an actual animal rights activist. It's not an easy ride, between trolling, losing friends and even family - but it will never be harder than what the animals go through. So, I shoulder it and try to remind myself who I am fighting for because honestly, I wish I'd had an "annoying vegan pushing veganism" on me to help me wake up from the hypocrisy of calling myself an animal lover when I had a dead animal on my plate. They are just babies - thrown into crates in the middle of the night and loaded onto trucks like mere cargo. Their trip to the slaughterhouse will be the first and last time they see the light of the outside world. In the two hours we attended the Thomastown slaughterhouse we saw four trucks arrive - this one facility is responsible for slaughtering 500,000 chickens every single week. The workers on site do not want us there - they have gone to great lengths to ensure that we are unable to get close to the birds in order to document their condition or to offer them words of love and kindness before the brutal death that awaits them. Offloaded by forklift and dumped in their crates these birds will be hung upside down by their feet, dragged through electrified water and then have their throats slit; a gruesome end to a short, sad and painful life. We do not need to eat these animals and yet the trucks keep coming. No animals wants to live a lifetime of suffering just to become your 10 minute meal. Real food is grown, not born. I can never forget them - the animals I get to speak to outside the slaughterhouses I visit. Part of my heart feels like it never leaves those barren roadsides and the only comfort is knowing that those sweet babies are no longer suffering. What breaks my heart constantly is knowing new ones are on the way. And what about all the trucks I'm not there for - what about all the animals who don't even get two minutes of love their entire lives? Just violence and abuse. What about them? Nothing I do is enough to make a difference to the ones on the trucks right now and it makes me sickened with the world around me. So many people munching away on corpses. If only they had heard their screams and watched the tears stream down their faces desperately as they look to you with hope (because they can tell you're there to help) and all I can give is kind words? What a joke this world is. It's a joke that we're forbidden from even offering water. People complain about seeing violence in their news feeds - do you know what I see when you proudly post photos of body parts? Violence! You have been conditioned to forget that lambs are babies who need their legs, you don't! The only person who should be drinking a cow's breastmilk is a baby cow - no mother should have her baby stolen after 9 long months just to slit their throats to deprive them of their lactate. I couldn't get close to the sheep that day, but this cow - oh they watched me the whole time and I saw the terror wash over their face as they passed by me again on their way to the next slaughterhouse where they would be killed - tears streaming down their face. None of these babies deserve to be here. Packed so tightly in the transport that some sheep were pinned against the walls of the truck - who knows how many hours they travelled like this. Transported in the pouring rain they are then offloaded to a barren holding pen where they will await their death, often 24 hours or more. What a horrific place to await a nightmarish murder, all for a meal that could just as easily be made out of plants. Being vegan is not hard and it is not extreme. I never knew your name but I loved you and I'm sorry. When the truck first arrived I came and spoke to you before you were taken inside. You watched me watching you from the fence I clamoured against as they unloaded some of your friends from the truck. This was not to be your final destination. As the truck came out of the gates again your eyes were locked on me as I tried to capture these images of you. I saw the look of terror in your eyes as you realised I wasn't to be your saviour, as the truck drove on mercilessly. I saw the tears that were rolling down your terrified face because you knew something very bad was imminent. Oh how I wanted to save you from what was to come, the most horrific and violent death imaginable with all the torture elements of a horror film - electrocution, blunt force trauma and stabbing. How dare we call this humane? I never knew your name, but I loved you and I'm sorry. Did they suffer because of you? After a heavy-hearted day bearing witness to animals, the vigil volunteers took a short trip from the horror-house, a mere five minutes away, to @strongheartssanctuary where we were able to spend some time with the lucky ones. As humans, our privilege is undeniable - we have pillaged almost all of the natural world and enslaved the most gentle creatures on the planet - we have them brutally violated, abused and murdered, all because we like the way their flesh tastes; and we like to convince ourselves that, because we are superior to them, we are ENTITLED to treat their bodies as commodities. Look into the eyes of any animal and you will see SOMEONE looking back at you, not SOME THING - animals are not inanimate objects, they feel pain just like human animals do. What will your excuse be, when your grandchildren ask you why you didn't do something to stop animal slavery - why you didn't help stop sentencing billions of innocent beings to death for a sandwich and a pair of shoes? All I could offer was love, kind words and a gentle touch; it broke my heart. I wanted to save them all - I still do. This man had already come past our chalk-art twice, scuffing his feet over as much of it as he could with each pass, making animal noises at us in a belligerent fashion. We had spent two hours drawing chalk art of animals, as well as a range of positive, pro-animal kindness messages, when our foot-dragging friend returned to upend a bottle of milk over as much of the chalk as possible. Imagine being so triggered by chalk words and art that you resort to school yard bullying tactics in order to counteract your own daily guilt and complicity in being an avid animal abuser. In the egg industry, male chicks are considered useless as they will never produce eggs for consumption - deemed a "waste product" these male chicks are separated from the females and then placed on a conveyor belt which leads them to a giant macerator where they are ground up alive; some slaughterhouses however, simply contain them all in a bag and suffocate them to death. Sadly, for these chicks, their lives will be brief and violent, often only alive for mere hours before being killed. Female chicks are subjected to bodily mutilation almost immediately following birth - having parts of their beaks burnt off to prevent chicks from pecking each other and causing "product damage" due to their confinment and squalid living conditions. Most chickens lose a significant amount of feathers in factory farms due to the high levels of ammonia and other components in their faeces which are never removed from their environment. Female hens have been selectively bred to produce as many eggs as possible - this puts an unnatural toll on their bodies. They have also been bred to grow far more rapidly than they would naturally, resulting in many chicks developing "spraddle leg" or hip displaysia, which renders them unable to stand or walk. The bodies of birds who die inside the factory farm sheds are left to decompose out in the open with no regard for the health and safety of the other birds, or even for factory workers. Until we change the way we treat animals, we will see our planet ravaged by pandemic after pandemic. Which side of history do you want to be on? This was my very first #CubeofTruth with #AVMelbourne in November last year. You may recall I mentioned a young man who tried to interact with me using a green phallus-shaped microphone - he's in the 3rd photo. I really admired the way @paulbashir_av held the guy accountable in their conversation as the young guy had a friend filming him and was clearly just trying to troll myself and fellow activists that day. It's very interesting to observe the different reactions that people have when whatever logic they were so sure of prior, becomes destabilised - some people deflect, some make verbal attacks and others use absolutely any reason to attempt to justify their behaviour. When you get down to the nuts and bolts of it, all animal rights activists are fighting to get people to see factory farmed animals for what they really are - VICTIMS! When you focus your gaze through the eyes of the victim, all arguments become moot. This weekend I was told "We need to find a nicer way to slaughter them," which is a typical human supremacist answer - it's not possible to do a bad thing in a good way. Arguing semantics about changing the AMOUNT of abuse suffered by animals is pointless because we don't want animals to be "killed nicer" - we don't want animals to be killed full stop! Today, the Melbourne chapter of Anonymous for the Voiceless held the first Cube of Truth for 2021. Foot traffic in Bourke Street Mall seemed a bit slower than last time and, in an ironic twist of fate, a store close to the Cube's location was handing out free ice-cream. There were a few passers-by who tried to taunt people in the cube with their stick of congealed cow secretions that were stolen from a baby - but it also offered a great opportunity for us to showcase the cruelty involved in killing cows and calves for ice-cream. I had a really productive conversation with one person, who seemed genuinely interested and motivated to learn more; so I felt really good about that interaction. The negative experience I had is hardly worth mentioning because it was quite petty and, despite the personal attacks hurled my way, it still had a silver lining for me - It clearly demonstrated the fact that people who feel themselves becoming destabilised in their "beliefs" when confronted with the realities of such brutal industries, will often jump to bullying tactics in order to make themselves feel better about their own moral inconsistencies. These sorts of experiences, both the good and the bad, are really what helps you to become a better outreacher (in my humble opinion) - learning to focus energy only on the positive interactions and let the "sticks and stones" interactions roll rights off, like water off a ducks back. Each of these experiences, I feel, are fortifying my resolve, strengthening my "activist armour" and testing for weak spots in my outreach conversations. So I was hoping to talk to one of my aunt's about veganism and before I had even said one word she interrupted me with, "I don't NEED to be brainwashed thank you!" It's hilarious considering she's the one who is so brainwashed and conditioned by television and the media, that she no longer acknowledges that animals are born to suffer an entire life of abuse and violence all for the sake of a 15 minute meal. Since then I've done a lot of work on my approach to engaging in conversation with non-vegans; it's been a rocky road but I've learned how to ignore triggering comments from people whose intention is simply to madden you to the point of giving up. Fortunately for the animals, I'm not a quitter... There is a global disconnect happening in terms of how animals are perceived and subsequently treated. Who decided that cats, dogs, guinea pigs and horses are friends, but chickens, pigs, cows and turkeys are for killing?! The medical endorsement of big meat and dairy companies have long been bought and paid for. Remember when Dr's told you smoking was good for you, even while pregnant!?!?! Well it's the same doctors who are endorsing these products to the point of idiocy! The World Health Organisation (WHO) announced that processed meats are Class 1 and 2 carcinogens - just like asbestos. So I guess my point is this - if you haven't done the research for yourself, do it!
