Warblerthon has slowed considerably and now the leaves have grown in making it even tougher. I was talking to someone at this park and he mentioned that the previous evening, warblers were everywhere. You could hardly turn around without seeing one. But when I went the next morning, this American Redstart was the best I could do. The other thing about all the leaves coming in is the green cast in the pictures if the bird is in some dense trees. What's the best way to mitigate this?

Silent Flight 🩷💚🦉🐿️❄️ @pressingmattersmag #pressingmattersinsert27 This pink and green composition is my second multiblock print. The five layers, coupled with a colour scheme I find difficult, presented a significant challenge, but I’m very happy with the final result. I was able to achieve different hues by layering the colours strategically, reducing the number of blocks required. The winter scene showcases a saw-whet owl with a red squirrel in its line of sight. Two deer look on from the hillside in the distance as the snow falls softly. The drama is framed by cedar, yew, and bittersweet, the red berries popping against the wintry backdrop. Although I haven’t seen it (yet) myself, there is a saw-whet owl frequenting our neighbourhood, and red squirrels are constantly active, both in our yard and in local parks. The northern lights are cool and all, but have you ever seen an Eastern loggerhead shrike hunt during a migratory stop? These birds are like orcas of the sky. They are bright and charismatic on one side, and masked killers on the other. A species with so few numbers that we can tell this individual isn’t from here because of the lack of leg bands. I’ve only seen a few juveniles before but not in the wild like this. Back then I was photographing them for work as they were being released from the Toronto Zoo’s breeding program/Wildlife Preservation Canada’s recovery program, both of which are still diligently trying to restore numbers in Ontario. But with this adult, I got to spend almost a whole hour in its company and watched (in both awe and horror) as it snapped a bird over half its size in its beak, before I even knew the other bird was there. It plucked the feathers and impaled it in classic butcher bird fashion. After a while, I saw a white-crowned sparrow also disappear into the branches below. The little birds knew to watch out for the shadows of large hawks and falcons, but not the small shrike that was diving from right above. It was bittersweet to witness. Multiblock mania. ❤️🖤🤍🪵🦫❄️ Silent Flight, my most recent print, is only the second multiblock print I’ve made, but I’ve enjoyed the process so much that I’m hooked! The challenge of planning the layers, overlapping the inks to achieve different hues, and watching the print build over time is incredibly engaging and satisfying. Although I have a different (larger) print on deck, I’ve decided to start another multiblock print so I have something compact to carve during Artfest. I plan to work on the key block while at my stall, and this way visitors will better understand the process. This one features a Pileated woodpecker and a beaver, along with a birch tree, winterberries and cedar trees. The colours will be pink, red, green and black, with brown zones where the red and green layers overlap. What a treat to spend some time with these beautiful birds this weekend on our camping trip. I saw them the first day, but there was a horde of pushy photographers there- the kinds who disregard everyone else and chase the birds up and down the boardwalk and block the way for people walking by with their tripods. I took a few photos that day, but decided I'd return later and see if it was a bit quieter. I went back yesterday afternoon, and no one was there, so I thought "hmm, the birds must not be out right now." But I looked over the edge of the boardwalk and there was this little guy, not 6 feet away from me, going about his business. I quietly sat on the bench and fired off a few rounds of photos, while he did his thing, unaware of my presence. One of my favourite photography moments to date- just me and the bird I wanted to photograph. I got lots of shots, but I like this one and how you can see the swamp water beneath him. Prothonotary Warblers are endangered in Ontario, with an estimated 28-34 mature birds. They breed in deciduous swampy forests, such as the forests found within Rondeau Provincial Park. Habitat destruction has caused an 80% decrease in numbers over the last 10 years. A midland painted turtle showing how scary it is as a sign not to mess with them! Little do these turtles know that they have been taken to a better habitat that they can now thrive in. Many projects we work on involve relocating turtles prior to construction works that occur in and around water to ensure they are not harmed during the process. In this case a stormwater management pond which needed to be cleaned out that had many turtles occupying it.
