Growing up we had a stubborn peach tree in the backyard. Tony and I would climb it, use it for a base for tag, make up games, read under it. It was lovely. It never bore fruit despite other peach trees being nearby that did. We joked about that as a family. Well, after years of laughter and shared memories, it surprised us with a bounty so heavy the branches snapped from the weight. We enjoyed the fruit (and got sick of it), but the loss of that strong, familiar tree left a gaping hole in our childhood haven. There was a sadness seeing its stump and later the hole where the stump once was. All we had if that tree were memories and stories. Losing a sibling feels a little like that grief for that broken tree. It’s an unexpected, overwhelming loss that steals a piece of your past and casts a long shadow on your future. It’s a tree that will forever exist in the past- bearing no new memories or fruit. Losing my brother feels like that. 💔Instead of fixing our #grief, which can’t be done, we learn to carry it with us. Sometimes it may be in a tiny compartment and not be visible or in our awareness. Other times it may be awkward, clunky, and hard to conceal. And, it may be somewhere in between. This can change from moment to moment and no matter how hard we try, our grief will always be with us. ❓How are you carrying your grief in this moment? Comment below. 💔Over a hundred years ago, Freud (yes that guy) introduced the idea that grief had to be resolved for someone to be healthy and functional. This idea has since been abandoned in our field of thanatology (death, dying, & bereavement) and psychology but it persists in our culture. This common belief makes it difficult to express grief and can feel isolating. 😬And I apologize because in early episodes of the podcast I referenced healing only because I didn’t have a better word but I cringe to hear that now. I have long known grief can’t be healed. Please forgive me for that. A big fan of narrative and bibliotherapy, I like a good metaphor and archetype. This is Hekate (also "Hecate"), a goddess associated with the underworld and death. She is seen as a guide, accompanying souls to the afterlife, and as such, she is linked to death and the mysteries of the underworld. The underworld represents the depths of the psyche and the mysteries of the unseen, emphasizing her role as a guide through inner exploration. In some traditions, Hekate is seen as a protector of those on the fringes of society, including the marginalized and outcasts. This role adds depth to her character, reflecting a concern for those in the shadows or the "dark" aspects of human experience. Hekate is like a keeper of thresholds, symbolizing the spaces between transitions, where change and transformation occur. This metaphorical representation underscores her role in helping individuals navigate life's transitions and embrace transformation. Hekate is like a guiding light in the darkness, offering profound wisdom and insight to those who seek her guidance.
