We recently had the privilege to welcome Alexander Stubb, President of the Republic of Finland, for an insightful conversation on the future of European and NATO defence and security policy in an increasingly unstable geopolitical landscape. History did not end in Europe, President Stubb stressed as he opened his speech, making reference to the ongoing war in Ukraine, while recalling his recent visit to Kyiv. ❝After my discussion with President Zelensky, I became more convinced than ever that we must continue to support Ukraine. The future of the international order and our own security are at stake.❞ The Finnish President's address focused on three main themes: Finland and defence, NATO and defence, and the EU and defence. As Finland recently celebrated its first anniversary as part of NATO, Stubb pointed to the role the Nordic state bordering Russia can play as part of the alliance. ❝We together will be building NATO 3.0 and I know that we are taking the alliance back to its roots as a deterrent against Russia. As stated in the NATO Strategic Concept 'Russia is the most significant and direct threat to our security', and this should be the focus of everything we do in Finland.❞ The Finnish President also touched upon the upcoming NATO Summit in Washington in July, reiterating the importance of supporting Ukraine. ❝Let me be clear – Ukraine’s place is as a full member of NATO. Progress towards membership is irreversible [...] This is the message that we need to send to Putin and to Russia❞. If governments fail to adjust their tax policies accordingly, Europe's ageing could become a significant hurdle to economies across the continent in the coming decades. 💰 To address this now, governments must resist the urge to squeeze easy sources of revenue and instead aim for a fairer tax system, which targets more lucrative sources such as wealthy individuals and globally mobile corporations. ⚖️ By embracing progressive policy, mainstream political parties can stave off the spread of populism, which is fuelled in large part by economic anxieties.
