On 06 May 2024, an EUNAVFOR ASPIDES warship, the Italian Frigate VIRGINIO FASAN, while providing close protection to merchant vessels in the Gulf of Aden, successfully repelled a multiple unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) attacks coming from Houthi-controlled territories in Yemen and posing a direct threat to the freedom of navigation. During this protection operation, ITS FASAN shot down 1 UAV. The action performed by ITS FASAN was effective in avoiding any damage to seafarers and merchant shipping. EUNAVFOR ASPIDES has a defensive mandate, to protect shipping targeted by attacks at sea or from the air. On 29 April 2024, destroyer ITS VIRGINIO FASAN, while providing close protection to a merchant vessel under Operation EUNAVFOR ASPIDES in the Red Sea, successfully repelled multiple attacks coming from Houthi-controlled territories in Yemen. During this protection operation, ITS FASAN shot down one UAV with its 3-inch gun. The attacks coming from Houthi controlled territories endanger lives of seafarers undermining maritime security. 🇺🇸 On Tuesday, the US Senate passed the supplemental budget bill of $95 bn, including $61 bn in military assistance for Ukraine after months of delays. While many friends of Ukraine in Europe justifiably heaved a sigh of relief at this development, several crucial takeaways must be drawn from this process. 🇺🇦 While this show of support from the US is welcome, European allies must maintain their current level of effort in the military sphere regardless. We recently had the privilege to welcome Alexander Stubb, President of the Republic of Finland, for an insightful conversation on the future of European and NATO defence and security policy in an increasingly unstable geopolitical landscape. History did not end in Europe, President Stubb stressed as he opened his speech, making reference to the ongoing war in Ukraine, while recalling his recent visit to Kyiv. ❝After my discussion with President Zelensky, I became more convinced than ever that we must continue to support Ukraine. The future of the international order and our own security are at stake.❞ The Finnish President's address focused on three main themes: Finland and defence, NATO and defence, and the EU and defence. As Finland recently celebrated its first anniversary as part of NATO, Stubb pointed to the role the Nordic state bordering Russia can play as part of the alliance. ❝We together will be building NATO 3.0 and I know that we are taking the alliance back to its roots as a deterrent against Russia. As stated in the NATO Strategic Concept 'Russia is the most significant and direct threat to our security', and this should be the focus of everything we do in Finland.❞ The Finnish President also touched upon the upcoming NATO Summit in Washington in July, reiterating the importance of supporting Ukraine. ❝Let me be clear – Ukraine’s place is as a full member of NATO. Progress towards membership is irreversible [...] This is the message that we need to send to Putin and to Russia❞. The European Air Transport Fleet ( #EATF) programme is a good example of how EDA initiatives are grown and developed with the Agency's support and once matured, are being transfered to Member States, giving them a permanent home for further project consolidation and development. Supported by fighter jet #aircraft and paratroopers, the programme aims to increase the EU’s tactical #airlift capabilities by addressing shortages and increasing #interoperability.
